Hair today: I know y'all are holding your breaths..

I shampooed with yes to cukes, conditioned with TN, the smoothing one, not the moisturizing one; and at Dusa's suggestion, I went back and tried CK again. Over that, a bit of Volumax. Ta da.

Results: Hair is nice and soft (see, this is why I like CK) with decent curl formation; a little frizz, and I would like more volume at the crown. In response to comments and suggestions of JLeighs, tomorrow I am going to do the same thing, only just CK. I have felt for a long time that the more I put on my hair in heat and humidity, the more reactive my hair gets, which I think makes sense with LP hair.

I don't have low porosity hair, but I am also finding that I need less layers of product in the summer. Yesterday I used a leave in before my styler, which I had not been doing for the last couple of washes, and my hair was terrible. Frizzy as all get out, and feels gross and producty, too. And this is a condish that my hair usually LOVES. So I think my hair was suffocating under too much product.

I'm glad you're having a better hair day today! One thing I was going to suggest last night before my iPad died was to check out this article, posted by Firefox (I think) in another thread:

http://www.naturallycurly.com/curlre...about-hair-gel

As soon as I read it, I checked my gel ingredients, put away the gels with the ingredients that are bad in high dews, and I've been having much more success. All stylers are not created equal!

Hey Myrna, I am laughing aloud because I took my own advice and went back to the CK too. I'd set it aside because I figured it wasn't much of a styler but since it's summer and I'd been dealing with more frizz + less definition anyways last week, I went ahead and used it. First I used KCKT (which I don't know if you've ever tried but it's a great leave in because it's light and really helps smooth down frizz as well), then a quarter sized puddle of CK, then some CJ Pattern Pusha. My hair looks fabulous, shiny, well moisturized and frizz free. I'm pleased. I think I'll be using the CK from now on. I agree less is more a lot of the time. Especially in summer. So happy to hear you're having a better hair day! If the CK doesn't work on its own tomorrow you can always use a gel afterwards too, but it might be enough.

Dusa: My only complaint now that the day is over and I am ready to turn in, is that I dont have enough volume at the crown. I may need to use more CK, I am conservative with it, although the video shows liberal use. How much do you use and what do you do to get lift at the crown?
Which video? The Meza one?

I use only maybe a quarter sized puddle. Or a half dollar sized puddle. But this is followed up by gel or gelly. When I tried it as a styler alone I had to use a lot more. For volume at the roots I cross clip while drying but I know you don't like the metal clippies. (Lovely Jules got bigger ones especially by deva though and says those don't snag or fall over.) Are the root lifting clips you were using not working out for you any longer? Another thing you do is bobby pin some sections strategically for added root volume. That works really well with coarse hair and it's easy.

Myrna- I'm wondering if your hair is like KathyMack's and gets satiated on products? Maybe it's a LP thing? She basically rotates products every day (I do too, actually, but not because I have to, but because I have too many not to!). If not, she says they quit working after a couple days, including her poos and conditioners...

Since you have a huge arsenal of stuff, maybe just try a different combo every day and not use the same thing two days in a row?

I was going to put this in your other thread, but I'll do it here. I think the reason putting products in very wet hair works so well for me in the summer is because blotting my hair after products are in takes even more of the product out. I can't get tiny amounts of product evenly distributed through my hair when I've taken so much of the water out. It won't distribute evenly or well in drier hair. With my hair very wet, I'm using less product, but the water helps everything get distributed well, and then I blot and take even more product out. The results for me are fantastic.

Dusa, yes I think the CK video is the Meza one, the blond. I could never spend so much time on styling my hair, she does that twirly thing with individual strands - and uses a quarter size on each one inch section - with that much time on her hair, and product, she must wash her hair once a week.

My experiment today with CK only was not too successful, but I do like how my hair feels with it, silky, and not like I have a lot of gunk to wash out the next day. I think tomorrow I will use CK with the Deva Foam. That is 2 expensive products, but oh well, if it works, it works.

What happens is that as my silver roots begin to grow in, it flattens my hair. Right after I get the roots colored, I dont have this problem so much. I dont see a way around this problem....anyone??

What gel are you using with CK, Dusa?

Chloe, I have a lot of conditioners but not so many shampoos. I have the SM shampoos - moisture retention and Coconut hibiscus. Some here have suggested they may be too heavy for this weather, so I was sticking to Yes to Cucumbers for a bit and the TN conditioner. Shampoos and conditioners dont seem to be as important for LP curlies as the styling products...anyone?

JLeighs, I have a mental block to applying product to soaking wet hair -( just like I have a mental block to paying the big bucks for shower gel in my favorite fragrance, Angel , which is no t cheap) - I feel like I am washing it , and product, right down the drain. Also, it has been my understanding that this also is not as important for coarse, LP curlies...anyone?

I am wondering if I need something other than gel over CK for hold. What might be some good options...anyone? everyone?

As far as getting lift at your roots goes.... Do you part your hair with a comb? I used to do that and it made my hair so flat. I read on here a few months ago about not doing that. Now I just get my hair falling the right direction with my fingers and don't worry about a nice straight part. Huge improvement!

Pianogirl, I am trying your no comb method today, thank you for the suggestion. I will let you know how it works.

Chupie, I wonder what she looks like when she gets up in the morning. I know what I look like when I get up in the morning!

JLeighs, my hair is also pretty wet when I put my products in. Again, I think LP hair behaves differently, in that products are not absorbed as much. Glad that works for you, and it works for a LOT of curlies here.
Yes, watching Meza's routine made me arms strangely tired. I can never spend more than 5 min applying products or ten blowdrying. But perhaps I would if I could go four to five days without having to wash my hair. But I like to run and bounce around a bit so. . . no dice. It's easy enough for me to wash my hair every other day.

The gel I used this time was CJ Pattern Pusha. It has a few humectants (panthenol and propylene glycol) though and I don't know if it would work out in 60-70 dew points. . . But I really like it. It's a very light hold on me and it doesn't give me crunch. I think the corn starch in it helps me hair clump nicely too.

I have to second pianogrrl's advice about the comb. I fix my part with my fingers too. I often switch it up on second and third day hair (switch sides of the head) for extra root volume. I know you wash everyday though.

That is so interesting about your roots. Tell me something guys, do you think dying the roots raises the porosity there a bit and makes the hair poofier? Sounds bizarre but my hair quite poofy and it's also quite porous. When I used to dye it my hair was even more prone to volume and frizz. . . When are you due to dye, Myrna? Again I know you don't like the metal thingies but I ordered some deva clips recently which are supposed to be bigger and sturdier so I'll do a review of how they work out. When I cross clip right at the roots and part I always get more root volume and root curl. Well, I say root curl--it's more of a root wave.

I tried not parting my hair today with a comb, and it helped a little, but not much. I think what happens is that the silver hair has a different texture than the rest of my hair, I dont know exactly how or what, but it does not respond to much, even clipping it, the clips do not hold in place well. I am going to speak to my stylist next time to see what she thinks. Much as I have not wanted to add in highlights, that may make the silver less visable at the top, and therefore may make something easier, although I do know that highlights bleach the hair, makes it less healthy, and more prone to frizz : ( can't win for losing.

On the brighter side, today I used the same shampoo and conditioner as the last 2 days, and CK with Deva foam over it and my hair is not frizzing. And its humid!

I am due back for a root color next week. Let me know when you do a review of the clips, Dusa.
Have you tried parting in a zig-zag or less neat way? Also, parting more to one side. When more of your hair is gathered to one side of the head you get volume by default and when your hair is parted in a zigzag fashion it also adds more poof/texture (overlapping hair) and hides roots coming in.

So happy you had a frizz free day! If it works for ya, it works for ya.

I can't wait for the clips actually. It was actually in chatting to you and mentioning them and Jules that I decided to finally bite the bullet and order them. Hopefully they live up to the hype.

yes, Dusa, I tried today. Did not make much of a difference. I have tried applying more product at the crown, and that does not really help either. I got better results when I used to diffuse upside down, and one of these days, I am going to bit the bullet and try that again, without clipping. It will have to be on a day that I dont have to go out. I have been thinking about this a lot, maybe even doing my old sulfate shampoo and old product routine.
I'm so sorry, hun. Sounds frustrating. I don't like to apply too much product to the crown either. Flattens me. And the hair there is new and doesn't need as much moisture or aid. I love to diffuse upside down. Why did you stop? Thanks to the meza video, when I do diffuse (I mostly air dry since it's summer), I toss my hair left (gently), pixie diffuse, toss it to the right (gently again) pixie diffuse. And then down. Three rounds then I'm done. I just am wayyy more careful than her and much more brief, however. Hopefully diffusing upside down again will work out but if not at least you have a backup.

Hi, Dusa, I stopped for several reasons: I became modified CG, and realized all that heat every day was not doing my hair much good; I started clipping my hair up for increased volume and curl definition; and (aggravation!) my hair would part and flatten in the back, what the late author Nora Efron named an "Aruba" (trees blowing to one side in the wind) in one of her books. And also, I could never really use a diffuser with fingers, I dont know why but somehow the plastic contact with my hair created frizz. So, when I did diffuse, it worked better for me to use a hot sock and keep the dryer moving. I did have less curl and more wave with this method, but I would not mind this at all if all else was OK. I know, I know, I should try again soon. I will. Just not on a day I have to be seen a lot. Maybe tomorrow; I dont have to be anywhere til 1:30, I can try my hair the old fashioned way, and if it doesnt work, well, then, I can just re-do it. Now I have to figure out if I m going to use my old product routine, Tousle me softly mousse, and Biotera gel. Do you use different products when you diffuse?? Oyyyy, this never ends....
Not sure if this would work for you, but I blowdry with my finger clamped down on the cool shot button the entire time and with the settings on "low" and "cool" to begin with. So my hair isn't exposed to any heat. Before I was just clicking the cold shot button every five seconds but now I just hold that sucker down. Oh, I've read about the Aruba, too. I love Nora Ephron. I think that was the last book she published before she passed away. (Funny sidenote--my father has an Aruba on the back of his head and my mother doesn't. She actually has more hair than me. Ahh, the irony. So every time a gust of wind hits my dad I remember Nora and want to giggle.) I don't use any different products when I diffuse. I rotate my products as best I can usually and it doesn't seem to make a difference so long as I'm pixieing. My diffuser has fingers though. They don't seem to cause any disturbance, thank goodness.

So here is a question: if I clip my hair, and diffuse: do I clip, let my hair dry some, then diffuse? or, do I diffuse some, clip, then let my hair air dry?? Oyyyyy, why does it have to be like this?

I was so sorry to hear of Nora Efron's passing. I loved her work, too. The book with the Aruba was her last; she was active in film, too, and wrote "Heartburn" which had Jack Nicholson.

My dryer has a cool shot - if you can call it that - but no cool setting just low, high, warm and hot. I may need to replace it...
