Smile Erghh, poofy curls & crown frizz!

I love curly hair and I would love for mine to be beautiful, strong, and healthy... but on the contrary, it is always crown frizz, poofy semi-defined curls, and gradual puffing up throughout the day.

I follow the CG method, cowash, rinse-out and detangling while hair is heavily conditioned. I use the super soaker technique and use the SheaMoisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie, then Herbal Essences Set Me Up mousse. After the product is in my hair, I use a microfiber towel to scrunch/dry it enough for me to put on my clothes without water dripping down my back and let it air dry from there.

While it's drying it looks pretty and defined! Then it dries and gets poofy and frizzes up. I use very moisturizing products (listed in signature) so what's the issue here? Is my hair just adjusting or...?

Thanks. <3

Hi...
I had a similar problem! Your hair is probably just adjusting.
You may want to try using a gel for a stronger hold to keep your curls intact after your hair is dry! I suggest the Devacurl one, it works wonders

IMO, not a lot of your products are very moisturizing. The SM smoothie is mostly shea butter which acts as a sealant, rather than a moisturizer. So you might need something more to actually moisturize your hair such as a better leave in. I would suggest something with more fatty alcohols. If you want to use the smoothie, I would suggest putting it on last. Also, it could be the reason for build-up which could be pertaining to the frizz and your V05 isn't strong enough to wash it out.

Here are the ingredients to the mousse:

Water, Isobutane, Propane, Polyquaternium 4, Bambusa Vulgaris (Bamboo) Extract, Cereus Grandiflorus (Cactus) Flower Extract (Cactus), Fragrance, Propylene Glycol, C9 11 Pareth 8, DMDM Hydantoin, Disodium EDTA, Citric Acid

The Polyquat 4 that I bolded, tends to be prone to build-up. Thus, your V05 isn't strong enough to wash out which could also be pertaining to this frizz.

So you use two styling products and no leave in conditioner? That could be your problem, you are not using enough fatty alcohols and cationic surfactants (the main emollients).

Are your products moisturising (rich in emollients and humectants)? They look more heavy/ sealing (rich in occlusives or anti-humectants) to me. Moisturising means adding or increasing water, butters and oils repel water.

For high porosity, low elasticity hair do more coconut oil soaks on dry hair - that penetrates, shea butter does not penetrate and can build up. For strength use more hydrolysed protein.

What are your properties? You could need a protein treatment. Mine always do that when my balance is off

Oh, okay, so the products themselves aren't exactly what I perceived them to be then... I'm pretty new to this, in all honesty.

What replacement products would you recommend then? I think I have Kinky-Curly Knot Today under my sink actually from a while ago, would that be a good product to use? I also have coconut oil, I'll do a soak tonight~

My hair properties should be attached in my signature, by the way, if that helps at all. Thank you so much for helping me, I feel pretty lost when it comes to caring for my wavy/curly hair.

The KCKT is not actually a good leave-in even though it states that is its use. However, it is an amazing detangler, so that can be used for that purpose. Coconut oil has a lot of great uses. Sometimes, I use that with another leave in, such as Tresemmé Naturals. You can possibly use your V05 as a rinse out instead of a co-wash. You could also use the SM Soufflé (I know you don't have that, but it seems you like the SM products) as a styler on top of a leave-in too.

It takes time but you will get there, you have found the Curly Girl method, now you need to play with it until it works for you.

Agree with Samanthascurlz, Knot Today is a detangler not a true leave in conditioner - no oils, few cationic surfactants or fatty alcohols. You might try either of your other creamy conditioners (Shea Moisture or V05) as a leave in, see how they work out before making another purchase.

I highly recommend reading your way through all the 'curl chemist' articles here on NC, also the Natural Haven blog, these will help you understand ingredients and products.

Will do, Firefox! Thanks for the link. And thank you all for your suggestions so far!

I am happy to report that after ditching my mousse today my hair still curled wonderfully on its own, and the crown frizz is basically nonexistent after I used a bit of conditioner as a leave-in along with a small bit of coconut oil! I think I was so afraid of my hair looking producty that I wasn't applying enough towards the top of it, but I took a chance today and it worked out great!

My ends are a different story however, they got suddenly very soft and kind of "fuzzy" not exactly frizzy. Maybe a trim is in order? A lot of the end pieces seem dry and... hrm... ratty? They're not tangled up, just not all the same cohesive length if that makes sense. Maybe I'll just take a picture...

Glad you have yielded some results from the suggestions. Yes, take a pic. A trim might be in your calling in the near future.

Around here, Deva is a love/hate line. Many of us start with it, think we like it, then move on to things we like much better. Since they changed the ingredients years ago, I won't let them use it on me at my salon. A few cuts ago, my CJ Daily Fix rolled out of the bag (in the car.) It was too late when I found out. Let them use the NoPoo on my hair. BIG MISTAKE. My hair hates polyquats and they are in a lot of the Deva products. Had to do a sulfate shampoo to remove it!

Another suggestion I'd make is not to use the microfiber towel. For me, they cause frizz. I use Curlease and Curls Like Us. You can also buy flour sack towels cheaply or use an old 100% cotton tee shirt.
