Need a leave-in recommendation

I have been getting better results skipping the leave-in stage, but my hair is pretty dry and I really do think I need something. My problem with leave-ins in the past has been that they seem to bulk up my coarse, dense hair and make it even coarser and denser, which is the last thing I want. The other problem I have is a lot of individual, coarse, wiry hairs on the crown that I believe may be damage, possibly sun damage, so something with UV protection would also be ideal.

FYI, I know some have had issues with the Tresemme Naturals Moist I'm using as a co-wash and a rinse-out--it was my first bottle of CG product and I'm almost done with it, so please feel free to suggest an alternate CO and RO as well.

Please recommend whatever you want, but I'm most likely to use only reasonably priced mass market products.

Type 2c: coarse, high-density, low porosity (so it would seem)
Avoiding protein and glycerin; going for soft, non-crunchy, frizz-free waves
CO & RO: Tresemme Naturals Moisture
Sealer: Olive oil
Leave-in/Styler: Kinky Curly Knot Today
DT: olive oil and honey

2bc/ f / ii. low porosity roots/normal po. shaft. normal elasticity.

Currently using:

Styler: UFD CM (old formula), FSG + CNPF, DE Shine & Refine, AB Strong Hold gel, SM C&S milk
PT: IAgirl's gelatine

hydrolized protein, jelly stylers
guar hydroxypropyltrimonium chloride, sulfates, jojoba oil
Neutral on cones.

Most recently it was the Tresemme itself that caused the problem--but it is a lifelong problem with leave-ins (and product in general) for me. Gel is apparently the exception--it tamps down both the frizz and the volume. I want something that will do that but also soften.

I am pretty sure my hair does not want protein--I base that on its overall coarseness and a pervasive problem with that straw-like feeling (much better since CG, but still something of an issue). I have also had negative (straw-like) experiences with coconut oil, and I gather that's typical of people whose hair is protein-sensitive.

I like my waves, but I honestly don't care that much about curl definition or clumping or anything nearly as much as I care about eliminating frizz, diminishing volume, and softening.

So the TNM is the only leave-in that you've tried, or the other leave-ins that you've tried weren't CG anyway and you couldn't use those?

What about something like using Darcy's Botanicals Pumpkin seed condish or CJ Smoothing Lotion? I was looking at Jessiebanana's siggy! She has fine hair but cannot handle protein. As far as drugstore brands, maybe using YestoCucumbers or YestoBlueberries as a leave-in. I think dusalocks and myrna were talking about these recently; they're both coarse-haired.

Any rich, protein-free conditioner should work. You're lucky with coarse and dense hair you won't really get weighed down (in a bad way) so you are free to experiment!

Correctimundo. Or maybe the leave-ins were CG, but I wasn't.

I was thinking from someone's recent post that Yes to Blueberries sounded intriguing. Thank you for reminding me!

I'm using the queen helene conditioner thing and a squirt of grapeseed oil. You don't need much of it because it's so thick and it's the single best thing I've ever put on my hair, ever. Their curl forming jelly thing is amazing too, and you also don't need a lot of it. I live in the Northwest and the humidity here is off the freaking charts, and this thing has singlehandedly unpoofed my hair in ways that I don't even grasp. It's not entirely cheap and it's also not too easy to find, but they do have a website. It lasts forrrrever though and I have a lot of hair.

I don't know what's in it though, I don't have the hang of the whole ingredient thing past the whole no sulfate stuff. I just know my hair really likes it.
JessMess likes this.
More deets, please! The cholesterol or royal jelly line? I think they carry that at my local CVS.

Just a thought, as I am no expert. But have you tried scrunching in some coconut oil before your styling product? Maybe keep skipping the leave in and try the oil? I had quit using it when I started CG. I recently went back to it and my hair feels/looks so much better.
Oh I remembered, an awesome leave-in without protein is the Alba Botanica LI. Leave-In Conditioner - Dry/Weak Hair - Hair Care It was one of the first leave-ins that I purchased and my hair drank it up! Now I'm finding I can't use it that much anymore as my hair isn't really dry ever (actually OCs easily due to it being fine) and likes a bit of protein, but I still keep it around because I liked it so much.
