I'm getting super frustrated! It seems like the more I try to do my hair right, the less curly it gets. But the frizz stays! How come it gets way more curly without putting any products in it? Shouldn't this stuff be helping to define the curls, not get rid of them?? I tried using more gel, and it doesn't really help.

Okay so I have been cowashing with the vo5 moisture milk, then using the gvp cb and leaving a little in, then the kcnt, and the la looks sport gel. And ive left coconut oil in overnight. It still looks like crap no matter what I do lol. Any ideas?

And I think I'm for sure going to schedule a devacut with Gerri Curtis in Houston. But it probably won't be until next month since I'm busy with school about to start back up. I just really want it to look decent!

Two things. Have you tried protein? And are you deep conditioning?

I'm really surprised no one has pointed you to the very basics of curly hair care: understanding your properties.

Here's a helpful link: http://livecurlylivefree.com/curly-hair-basics/

Before you go crazy trying products recommended to you by people with completely different hair properties, do figure out your properties (porosity, hair width, density, elasticity). Those properties will tell you what kinds of products to choose. Curl pattern doesn't matter as much at this point but I think you're a wavy, either 2b or 2c... hard to tell at this point. You can also look around for your "hair twins" or "hair siblings" (people with the same or similar properties) and see what they are doing and using (their siggies). Don't worry too much about curl pattern and seek advise from those with similar hair properties rather than same or similar curl pattern.

And welcome!

I think it's course and high porosity, but I don't see the other stuff on there.
And I've been using coconut oil and that gvp to deep condition.

Yeah there's no way I can figure out my curl type right now. I have way too much going on! It's like ringlets underneath and straight on top lol.

And no I haven't tried protein. I'm a little scared to lol. Do y'all think it would hurt it too much to do it one time if protein isn't good for it? I never really tried protein treatments before, but I've tried protein shampoo and conditioner and my hair dried out really bad and started breaking off.

I can't get a good picture, but this is what the curls underneath the top layer are shaped like.

I agree with Chupie, I actually think your hair looks great!

Yes, I also think you should try protein. I like the IAgirl's gelatin recipe (made out of Knox gelatin packets) Pedaheh's Hair Blog: Science-y Hair Blog Recipes

I will try it tomorrow. Probably a stupid question, but I just use regular vinegar and not apple cider vinegar?

Straightening can cause heat damage, especially if done over a long period of time; so if you straighten often it may take a while to see a difference but you definitely will by doing any moisturizing or protein treatments as needed. I can never tell, so I hope this isn't a stupid question, but is your hair highlighted? That could affect why the top layer is acting different than the bottom layer. If not, I still hope you come to a resolution for how you want your hair to look. I think your hair is very pretty and that last pic you posted of the under layer curl makes me think you have great spirals mixed in.

Most of my hair is spirally-ish curls except for the stupid top layer which pretty much doesn't do anything. Yes, it is highlighted. But it's pretty much evenly throughout my hair, not just the top. It's time that it has to be redone so I think I'm going to put more lowlights in it and not as much blonde. I can't go completely brunette or I look ridiculous. And that opinion is from others not just me being paranoid it's like no matter how tan I am, I looked washed out. I don't get it.

Thank y'all for the help! I'll let you know how the protein treatment works out.

My hair is coarse, dense, frizzy, and dry too. I've used the gelatin PT and my hair seems to like it. Don't leave it on long the first time until you know.

What I love is microwaving a tablespoon each of honey and coconut oil together and then mixing it with pretty much any conditioner, and leaving it in for and hour or two. Then I cowash it out and style as usual.

I use a leave-in, FSG, and a hard hold gel, but my hair looks good without the FSG too. Skipping the leave-in or hard hold gel don't work as well for me. My top layer is also much straighter and when I scrunch in my gel upside down it sort of evens out the wave patterns somewhat.

Also, once you apply your products don't touch until dry!

What leave-in do you use? And what gel? I'm not messing with fsg again. I tried that awhile back and that was a mess!

Renpure (the red bottle) as my leave in and BRHG as my gel. I've used other leave-ins, but I always use BRHG.

When are you applying product? Are you doing it soaking wet and then plopping or scrunching out water? Applying product to soaking wet hair made a HUGE difference for me! You want to hear the "squoosh" as you are applying the gel. And are you touching before it's totally dry?

Also, if you do the quick version (3 min) of the gelatin PT, I think you might be surprised! It's easy and not too strong, so it's a good way to test. Your hair looks like a denser version of mine..

I've been putting it on wet and plopping it, but the past couple days I just scrunched it a little after I put the gel in. I don't know what you mean by the squoosh sound. I haven't been touching it. It's hard, but I haven't been. I don't think I usually touch my hair a lot, but it's so hard not to when you know you can't! I'm about to go get some gelatin to try it.

The squish sound is demonstrated very clearly here. Go to about halfway through and watch her routine if you don't want to listen to the whole video. http://youtu.be/FZrv8jJCBOs
