Help! My hair always snarls up!

My hair has always been prone to knotting up, especially in the back. I'm afraid that by combing it out and tugging at the snarls, I may be damaging my hair in the process because I tug so hard. Advice?

As I Am CoWash and As I Am leave-in conditioner daily/every other day. Deep conditioning with coconut oil occasionally. Wide-toothed comb. Hawaiian Silky 14-in-1 to style.

10,000 mg of biotin/ day. Multi-vitamin. 100 mg/day spironolactone. 2,000 mg/day metformin. Yasmin for hormone therapy. Rogaine for men.
I read an article on the curl power app that has the frizz forecast that you can use oil as a 'pre- poo' to help with knots. I use a denman brush. It's great on tangles & doesn't break the hair. But I also pre-poo with coconut, olive, and castor oils. They really make my hair soft & tangle free.
Are you combing your hair dry, or in the shower? My hair is also 3a, and thick. Before I went CG, I was combing dry and constantly had tangles, partly because I was disturbing the curl which just creates more tangles. Now I only detangle in the shower when my hair's soaked in conditioner. Detangling is fast and easy, and my hair doesn't get particularly snarled in between washes (because the curls remain fairly intact). Even if I don't wash my hair for four days, it doesn't take me more than about a minute to detangle in the shower. Much easier!
3a/b, F, normal porosity

Suave conditioner, LAL gel
I detangle in the mornings and after showers.

this morning it was a million times better, probably because I did a coconut oil pre-poo last night. Hm.

I highly recommend trying shower detangling instead. I never would have believed it, but I seriously have much less tangling now that I only detangle in the shower every few days than I ever did when I detangled dry twice a day. Better curling, too. I only touch my hair with a comb in the shower now.

Don't comb out large knots and definitely don't tug that is damaging. Finger detangle in sections slowly and patiently working from the bottom up, only when in the shower and your head is slathered in a slippy conditioner. Conditioner only washing can be helpful because then you have tow chances to work on tangles, shampoo can encourage knotting. Also deep treating with oils.

Do not dry or damp comb your hair, that can cause damage and worsen tangling in the long run, hair doesn't need to be detangled daily - it's not straight hair that is supposed to be able to have a comb run through it.

It gets tangled mostly after sleeping on it. I don't braid my hair or use a satin cover or anything....

yikes I need to learn how to braid. What is the pineapple thing?

Pineapple-ing is putting your hair in a high, high ponytail. I keeps the back of the hair taut so it doesn't tangle and the top maintains curls
