Frizzy top layer
My canopy consists of course broken hairs but the hair underneath is curly but not as course. What can I do to make the top layer smoother and not always look so messy?

Bumping because I wish I knew, too. Silicone worked great, but now that I'm off that I haven't found anything that works as well.

I have some success with homemade sprays calming down that outer layer--olive oil, water and honey, and then most recently just 50/50 olive oil and water. But there's still a halo of frizz. Very frustrating.

Coconut oil deep treatments have helped me a bit with this....I suppose it's decreased my porosity a bit and helped it to calm down and behave.

Most people have some difficulty getting gel to the hair in their canopy. With broken hairs, it would be particularly difficult. So I would suggest starting your gel application by skimming your hands lightly over your canopy before flipping your hair over and scrunching it in.

I also agree that deep treatments will help, but I think that more targeted gel application should make a big difference.

Coconut oil will penetrate the hair shaft and increase elasticity, so anyone with broken hairs can benefit. Be careful not to put your hair up and break more hair. Moisturize thoroughly and I agree that targeted gel application with a strong hold gel should help. You could also find a liquidy gel or add water to your gel to graze over the canopy while your hair is dry. Water+conditioner can also help during the day.
