Default Birth control and hair worries?!

Hello all, I am considering starting BC but am TERRIFIED of the consequences it might have on my hair!

My hair was ringlets as a baby, straighter and thicker throughout my childhood, then got curlier when I went through puberty. I have recently noticed it is fine and I would say thin-medium density, but the curls are anywhere from 2c, 3a, to 3b depending on what I use in it and how I style it.

I realize that A LOT comes into play regarding curls and hair, but can anyone share experiences?

I am very concerned about hair loss. I can handle it if my hair is not as curly (I'll still style it curly but i might need a curling iron...) although I will be heart broken, but I am more concerned about the whole hair loss part. I don't want it to be thinner than I already feel it is!

Please please please! Someone answer???

I have the same worries as you. I've been taking bc for three months now & have had no problems(I was taking Micronor) but this week I had to switch to the generic kind that's called Camila. Yesterday I was reading up on it on the internet, and there was sooo many reviews that said it made their hair fall out in clumps. My hair is already thin so I can't afford to loose anymore. Its different for everybody, but worrying about it can make it fall out even more. You could talk to your doctor about your worries and if it does happen they should be able to change you to a different kind.

I've been on BCP for almost 20 years, primarily for medical issues, and I can't say for sure if my hair changed at all because of it, but I can definitely say that I never experienced and hair loss.

I had no hair loss when I was on them, either.

I've been on BC for almost 9 years, and I have not had any hair thinning due to it's use. I may have had an enhance in curl pattern, but because I started taking BC before my puberty was complete due to medical reasons (cystic acne is no fun), I cannot say for sure if this was due to the BC, or what would have happened anyway.

Any experience that changes your hormones can have an effect on your hair, pregnancy, just had a baby, menopause, etc. But if you find any problems with your BC (which I doubt), you can always ask your doctor to change the dose and see if that helps. It took me three different dosages before I found the right one that worked for me.

I can't say if I noticed a change in curl pattern - that was before my CG days. And I would think going through a pregnancy did more to change it than BCP did. (I went CG just after I had my twins.)

So I'm not really an accurate read on that. If I had to guess I'd say it didn't have much if any effect of my curls. Of course others may have a different experience.

And of course different BCPs have different synth hormones, and different levels of them. So it's hard to say, really.

But overall I wouldn't expect too big of a change.

When I was on BC, i didn't have any negative side effects. No extreme shedding, no break outs, no dryness. But everyone is different.

Several years on, no noticeable impact on my hair during that time. My hair went curly at puberty, only significant issues since have been a little limpness when I wear a bun in the same spot too often, or I go without protein too long. Never had kiddos, hormonal contraceptives are my only biological reference point. Hope it helps! Just pay attention to your body and trust its adjustment period. Give the situation a week or two before you start to worry, and beyond that, stay in touch with your doc! Best wishes!

I was only on it for maybe two years but I have to say, I didn't notice any difference with my hair. Be prepared to gain a teensy bit of water weight though.

I never had a problem, and I was on it for at least 12 years. Remember that stories you read online aren't necessarily indicative of the frequency of side effects, because it's human nature to talk about negatives more than positives. You can go on any manufacturer's website and check the actual frequency, which may make you feel much better. Chances are hair loss is not very common.

Manufacturers studies are also biased just like online stories.

Anyway for the record my hair wasn't affected though I had other side effects.
