Terrycloth - Not So Bad Afterall?

The word 'terrycloth' on this site causes a lot of hair raising... But today, I had to put my hair in a terrycloth after showering (My floursack towels were all dirty and my cotton T-shirt was in the washer... oops! ) and surprisingly enough... the result wasn't frizz or "stringlets," but more volumized roots! I applied my leave-in and gel and the results were actually really good! Terrycloth doesn't bother my hair anymore than the cotton T-shirt or floursack towels do...

Do any other curlies not have problems with regular terrycloth bath towels???

i use towels all the time. I just squeeze out the water with them and plop with them. I never had a problem all my life. I tried a tea shirt. I tried microfiber but they don't have the extra water out of my hair. plus a towel is easier and faster.
my hair is fine. Im not rough with the towel so I don't have snags and breakage like everyone thinks. If you get a good towel you'll be fine.
I find that as long as you don't rub at all, any towel works. A t-shirt, MF towel, FS towel, etc - those are more "forgiving". But terry cloth will work, pretty much as well.

Now a turban - that will pull my curls right out! I'm a plopper, for sure!

I love terrycloth towels! I used to use t-shirts, but they just weren't getting my hair dry. After I shower and apply my leave-in and gel, I turban my hair in a terrycloth towel for 20 minutes, and then scrunch it with the towel after I take the turban out. It gives me tons of volume too! I even get root curls now. I think the stigma against it is quite undeserved.

Glad I'm not the only one who likes terrycloth towels!
I actually think I like them more now... as my T-shirt seems soaked, but my hair doesn't seem to get dry...?

What started the whole 'no bath towel' thing, anyway? Was it Loraine Massey?

Interesting. I don't feel like towels are more absorbent. Also not all terry is equal. Some are as soft as microfiber now.

Yes. It was in the original Curly Girl, and I'm sure it's in the current (second) edition.

I've been using smooth surfaced towels since going CG, and placing one over a terry towel on my pillow when I go to bed with wet hair. However, rather recently I've been omitting the smooth towel over the terry, and doing just fine. I suspect, like the o.p. that it's the rubbing which is more of a factor than the loops; also that all terrycloth is not alike, nor is all microfiber.

I think to some extent it may depend on hair type as well as some environmental factors. I know that if I use terry towels (or microfiber, for that matter), I do get a lot of frizz even if I'm not manipulating the hair with the towel. I also get frizz if the towel pulls too much moisture out of my hair, so I don't actually want my towel to do more than absorb some of the excess moisture so my hair isn't dripping. I definitely can't plop more than about 10 minutes.

as long as i don't rub my hair with it im fine but t shirts dont dry my hair like they do for other people
