Default Is Kinky Curly really that worth it?

I live in Canada and if you're Canadian and curly you know how hard and annoying it is to get some of the more popular products because of either a. It being non existent here or b. it costing a fortune to ship here. I hear soooo much raving about the KK products, specifically the leave in and the custard. Are these really worth while products? I'm still trying to see if I can get lucky and find them here, as I found Curly Hair Solutions products in a beauty supply store close by so I was surprised. I didn't get a thorough look around the store so it might be there for all I know but I'm doubting it. I don't think Sally's carries it either. Why are the products so hyped? And what does the custard do? Is it like a gel? Beautiful Textures has a custard and some people say its a good dupe (found at Sally's).

Oh and if anyone might know a good dupe for the custard or leave in share that as well please!

The custard is great. The leave in is just okay... It detangles well but it's not really that moisturizing.

KCCC is very different from any jelly or custard I've tried. For me, it's a curl enhancer and a gel.

depends on your climate IMO. It doesn't hold up well in humidity.

I actually prefer FSG over KCCC. I think it's really great for those with high density, coarse hair and tighter curl patterns... who live in dry or moderate climates. I think it's tricksy for wavies. hope this helps.

I use it combined with BRHG. It gives me great curl definition, frizz control, and decent hold, but since I need a hard hold I add the BRHG. Our dews are generally fairly moderate, but can reach into the 60s (actually are in the mid-60s next couple of days) and KCCC will still work decently for me. I haven't tried it in dews over 70 though. Many people really love it, but some who try it hate it, so YMMV!

I really like the leave-in but hate KCCC. I splashed out and had some shipped over and, for me, it was a total waste of money. I bought it before I discovered my hair hates aloe. It also hates gel generally so not sure why I bought it! Sucked in by the hype (again).
I think iherb sells it and they have good shipping prices (very cheap to Australia anyway, I presume it would be cheap to Canada too).

Oh wow, iherb ships to Canada for only 4 bucks! (the cheapest option at least) that's awesome, they also have real techniques brushes which I've been wanting to try for ages :P thanks so much, I think I'll try KCCC out for myself, although I know if I get hooked it's gonna be pricey product to keep buying. One concern I have though, is it really heavy on the hair? I have easily weighed down hair. Also, should I apply it in sections, or just comb it through with my fingers, or just scrunch it in? I live in Ontario close to Toronto, and the summer has really died down now and it's already starting to feel like fall. Super cold and windy the other day. I don't know too much about dew points but they don't get very high here either.

I tried both extensively, but found the custard to be producty in my hair although I liked the curl definition. Both products do not work well with my highly frizz prone hair and high dew area. I moved on to an oil-based leave in since the KCKT has humectants. I have tried FSG and Jessicurl's Pattern Pusha and liked them better as they are less producty, although there is a bit of trade off with less clumping and a little less curl enhancement with the PP. Keep in mind however, for me, any product used in large quanitities on my hair tends to feel producty.

I've only used KCCC so I cannot comment on the other products. If I use it as my main product of the day, yes, it can feel producty until it's dry and I totally SOTC, and it can take forever to dry.

However, I do love a little of it scrunched in a little ways into diffusing a la the Smasters method to tighten up my curl. That consistently works great for me.

Typically, I
  • comb in a bit of curl cream like CJCCC, regular or lite (for me, just three fingers lightly dipped and rubbed between my hands)
  • then some actual CG gel (KCCC isn't a real gel) like LALSG or BRHG, HESMU (nickel size of BRHG, quarter to half dollar size of the other two or most other gels)
  • rewet with a spray bottle (SuperSoaker method but less messy than at the sink. Works just as well for me)
  • comb thru w/a fine-toothed comb or Denman brush (the latter seemed to be causing me some breakage, so I switched to a comb). For some reason, doing one or the other does make a difference in the final quality of my curls.
  • scrunch in to get it curling, first with bare hands then with something like a Curlease, flour sack, old t-shirt, paper towels, etc. - just not terrycloth toweling
  • diffuse maybe five minutes (I do upside down)
  • then I dip 3 fingers into KCCC up to about the first joint, rub hands together and scrunch thru hair
  • continue diffusing for a couple of minutes, and mine noticeably curls right up better than pre-KCCC
  • flip upright and clip the top for a while
  • air dry
  • SOTC when fully dry - it can be hard to w/KCCC if it isn't, plus it's the best way to prevent frizz anyway
Using just this bit as described above, an 8 oz. jar lasts me a long time. I'd estimate the last one was a year or close to it. Sounds involved, but from start all the wy down to the last two takes me maybe 10 minutes.

I get mine at Target now, if you happen to have them in Canada. BTW, CHS is in Toronto, so I'd be surprised if you weren't able to find it in Canada.

They just opened Target in Canada - replaced all the Zellers - do you think I'd be able to find it? And thank you so so much for sharing your method with me, super helpful my hair isn't that long either so hopefully it'll last me since it is pricier

Just called into the Target closest to me and asked if they carried any kinky curly products, the lady said no without a pause but not in a rude way, she said "oh I know we don't carry that I've been asked before" but I'm not sure if she just didn't want to check and was kind of politely waving me off or not lol. Either way I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't have it, and if they did I know it'd be over priced like everything else in Canada's Targets. With shipping its only $21 to order on iherb so I think that's just what I'm gonna do.

For me, it's not that great. I have it, I've used it, and just don't reach for it very often. It's not that it's bad- it's just that I have other things that work a lot better for me. But....I do believe it's one of those products you just have to try. So many people LOVE it.

(whew, I thought the above was lost - system went crazy and didn't seem to save it after I'd typed all that!)

Well, if you're ever there anyway you might look and compare prices if they have it. In the US it's not on the regular haircare aisle, but all the curly specialty products are where the organic hair and skin products and unique make-up lines are - e.g., Welleda, Giovanni, Pixie, Sonia Kashuk, Elf, etc. A row or two over from the regular shampoos, etc.

BTW, my hair's longer than my avatar, bra band length when curly, way below when straight or wet, and that's still enough KCCC to make a difference.

Good Luck!

In my opinion NO! Plus it is so expensive. I looked like a poodle after using it. I get great results with my homemade flax seed or okra gel.

Funny but I absolutely hated KCCC. I do use KCKT for detangling. So, it's popular but not for everyone.

I apply my KCCC same as I do any other product. Sweep down and scrunch up. Remember--a little goes a long way. (You can easily spread a dab of it on your palm though.) And I highly recommend trying FSG first. It's cheap, it's customizable, and it doesn't easily weigh wavies or fine haired curlies down.

I'll admit, when I was first starting out CG, I hated KCCC and KCKT. They didn't have enough moisture and didn't have enough hold, and my curls just went limp. Now that I have a handle on my protein/moisture balance, and know a routine that works for me, I decided to revisit it.

Target just recently became a superstore in my town, and they JUST got Kinky Curly, I know, I've been looking at that aisle for four years Since I'm in Michigan, maybe it'll make it's way up to our next door neighbors lol.

So yeah I finally found it, used it as a curl enhancing jelly, not as my only gel, with Volumax mega hold on top, and I was impressed. My hair did end up fluffy and a little undefined at the end of the day, but it was still curling at the roots, so I just need to tweak the routine a bit. I'm happy I can put another on-ground gel into my stash, but I won't go running to the stores when I run out. I am a fan of Kiss My Face Upper Management Gel as a curl enhancing jelly, and it is a lot cheaper, and also sold on iHerb.

The Targets in Canada seem to have much less product diversity -- there are a TON of products from the American Targets that we just don't get up here.

A few months ago, I found a small supplier of KC and indulged in the leave in ad the custard. The leave-in is useless for me, but the Custard is kinda cool. My profile pic is what happens when I use the custard; great clumping, awesome shine and definition, but I get about half the shrinkage as usual and half the curl!!! I go from a solid 3A to a 2C/2B. So if I'm going for a looser curl, I totally reach for it. BUT it takes forever to dry. Three hours longer than if I use my regular styling products. Sigh!

Let us know how it works, Sarxh!

Is KC still selling their travel kits in N. America? I'm in Germany and just ordered one from curlyemporium in the UK. It's a trial-size way to try out KT, CC, the shampoo and the Spiral Spritz.

Personally, KCCC just reset my definition of HG. I thought my CJ/Jessicurl/Curl Keeper/BRHG/whateverelse cocktail was as good as I was gonna get, short of making my own FSG. And then KCCC just swooped in and gave me crunch-free hold, clumps, definition and curls that hold for three days easy without even TRYING. I put CJ CCCC Lite underneath and sometimes BRHG on top for max hold. This is only the 4th time I've used it so I'm still figuring out a routine, but I am totally sold.

YMMV, which is why I really suggest looking around for one of their travel kits. And if they stopped making them... they should really, really start again.

Yeah, KCCC without another gel does usually lose some definition for me by day's end, but with a little of something else for hold I can easily go 3 days, often 5 or more. Strangely, I get that kind of hold with the KCCC and the other products, but not with it alone or with them alone. However, I use it, it makes my hair more curly, not less like curlytwirlykate, but everyone's different.

Frankcesca's cocktail of CJCC lite and BRHG (or LALSG) is my most common combo with it, usually with just a bit of KCCC as described earlier.

Have never had any flaking from it, as someone described, even when I used a lot more of it - sticky, maybe, until absolutely dry, but not flaky.
