How much product are you supposed to use?

What is the right amount of shampoo/cleanser and conditioner to use. I've heard some people say you arent supposed to use more than a dime size of shampoo and a palm full of conditioner. I know this works differently for everyone, but is there a basic rule of thumb that applies to most people? How much product do you use at a time?

It's all trial and error. A lot depends on hair properties. Here's a link to help you determine yours Curly Hair Basics | Live Curly Live Free

I have fine/low porosity/low density hair. I use minute amounts of most products, especially really rich ones. It frequently takes my hair HOURS to absorb product after it dries. I wet, used a rinse out and styled my hair around noon. Used curl towels to scrunch out water and diffused for a few minutes. My hair is dry, but the product is still not absorbed, although my hair has been dry for a while. I only use two layers--CRN Soylicious and Curl Maker.

A lot of people say that they use ALOT of product. I personally have never had luck with using a bunch of product. I use as little as possible, except for cow ash which I use a ton of. Although I have some high porosity hair, products just seem to sit on my hair and never absorb. I use about a teaspoon of leave in for my BSL medium density hair. As for curl enhancer, I try to use a little as I can to get even coverage. I only use about a half teaspoon of gel on my canopy for frizz control.

Lol, took me a minute to figure out what cow ash meant! I use whatever amount of product I need, which for some is very little and for others quite a lot. I don't generally need too much leave in, but do need quite a bit of gel. I'd suggest playing around with amounts to see what seems to work best, noting results as you go. Keeping a journal can be very helpful (products and techniques) until you get it figured out.

Wash: CJ Daily Fix, As I Am, TJs TTT
RO: YTB
LI: Suave TC + CJ CCCC, brushed through with Denman
Styling: Smooth in LAL Wet Look gel, scrunch, and plop 10 minutes, then add a little more gel, cover with silk cap, and sleep on it
Refresh: 3:1 water/Suave mix as needed
i use alot but if its a really heavy leave in like sally's matrix balm then i use very little cos it goes a long way. but if I use something like suave as my leave in. then I have to use alot because my hair soaks it all up. If I use very little leave in normally my hair is frizzy when it dries. I say I use about two golf ball size ball when i put mouse in.
Thank you for the replies! I think I'm using too much product and am going to experiment with less to see how things work out.
