I attempted highlights!!!

So today, I decided to highlight my own hair. I used the the Garnier Fructis Nutrisse permanent color in light blonde, because I knew it would darken in my black hair. Anyways, I applied it to some of my curls, waited 20 minutes, and washed it out. The result: Only the roots had color, but very little. From there down to the ends of my curls, there's little to no color, even though I made sure each curl unit was covered with the cream. I don't think I applied enough, and want to try again, but I'm worried that if I try too soon I'll damage my hair. I guess that because my has low porosity, the color didn't take completely? Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

Maybe try Dark & Lovely? But I thought the time was 30-35mins for color

I highlighted using textures and tones 7c lightest blond. Put on a shower cap (the heat helps processing). I also sat under the hooded dryer for about 10 minutes. My hair was almost jet black. The highlights turned out a golden brown/ dark blonde. I love it. Good luck.

Like KinkyRN said, heat and time definitely help. I always leave dye on longer when lightening because when you have dark hair it might take longer to lift, especially if you have low porosity. I would also do your lengths before your roots next time. Your roots will change color faster because they are closer to the head (heat!), so you should do them last (like a 10 minute difference between applying on lengths and applying to roots).

Is that am ammonia free product? You may need a higher volume peroxide than found in a box dye. If the roots took that suggests they benefited from the heat of your head and the lengths were too cold, ammonia free developers particularly needs heat. Try doing strand tests on shed plughole hair next time.
