The trouble with pineapples

Like Tree5Likes

So I've been trying to pineapple at night, but it really hasn't been working out. The trouble starts in the morning when I take down the pineapple. The hair at the sides wants to stay stuck up in pineapple position at the roots, if that makes any sense. My hair has a habit of trying to retain whatever style it's been in for a length of time. Does anyone else have this problem? Am I having bad results because my hair is long? I'm open to giving up on the pineapple, I'm just looking for a way to protect the canopy while I sleep. I already use a satin pillow case. The ends of my hair are usually fine, it's the top that likes to frizz up by morning. I'd appreciate any advice really.

My hair also sticks in whatever style I put it in, so even a sleeping cap would leave it all smushed. I also move a lot in my sleep.... so nothing stays in.
mine does this. its only once in a while if i put coconut oil in my hair at night wet and let it dry and then put it up ill wake up with no dents and stuff. second day hair doesnt wok for me because my hair molds so well to styles as well
I have that problem too. Not sure how to fix it either.
I have pineapple problems too :/ at night, my hair can look really nice, but by the time I wake up all the waves have been pulled out and my hair is really tangled. It's probably because I'm a crazily active sleeper haha
I also have the same problems I thought it was bc my hair was short but its grown and now to my shoulders (sorry havent measured my length just yet just passed my year from my bc) anyway ive tried loose holders santin pillowcases and satin scarfs its either stiff or frizzy so Ive found doing braid outs keeps my natural curls and give me my length since I have horrible shrinkage I used to do twistouts but I like braidouts better anyway im willing to try a new method I hate having to braid my hair every night in 4 braids lol

If I braided my hair I'd wind up with crinkly waves instead of curls. When my hair was longer I used to like braiding it to get that "wavy" look, but it doesn't hold up.
Same here! My hair just ends up losing most of its curls and it just stays in the pineapple shape :/ I have to fluff it so much and re apply products to make it the way I want

I've never tried pineappling but I suspect I'd be in the same boat if I did - if I take my hair out of a ponytail it stays back of it's own accord. I can't plop for the same reason, my hair just doesn't fall back down when I take it out and I have to mess with it so much I might as well have not bothered.
Sorry, I'm no help, I have to redo my hair every day.

Lol thanks girls, I'm glad it's not just me. I've never tried sleeping in braids, I'm not sure how that would work out but it's worth trying. Last night I tried laying my hair over the top of the pillow, and clipping my hair at the point that lets it comfortably stay over the pillow. This seemed to keep the curls safe from being flung around, while also not tampering too much with the capricious hair at the front. The length was fine this morning, but the top was still upset. I might try a bun pinned to the back of my head next, I don't sleep on my back so maybe it won't interfere too much. *crosses fingers*

Mine sticks up too but it settles back as I walk around the house. Can't say it ever looks great, the underlayer is permanently straighter but the canopy covers it to an acceptable level. My pineapple is very loose tho, a terry cotton ponio or scrunchie that is not looped at all.

I pineapple but instead of a loose pony I just flip my hair over and tie my long scarf around my head to where it is like a loc soc and pull it up and let the curls hang out the very top. This works for me. The high pony with a scrunchie always left me with dented hair or messed up curls that wouldn't bounce back.
I just use the pineapple to keep cool. It preserves nothing. And my sides do this. For me there has begun to be a bonus in that, It creates volume at the base all around. But that's it. Yet some people seem to really get something out of it.

I just last night tried something new that actually worked well for me! I took a large, square silk scarf and folded it in half to be a triangle. Then I put the triangle under my hair and brought the 2 "tails" up around to my forehead and tied them. I loosely piled my hair on top of my head, if that makes sense. Then I grabbed the end that was still under my hair and pulled it up over the back of my head to my forehead, and tucked it under and through the knot on the forehead so it would stay.

My hair stayed in place all night, even though I sleep violently, and while there are a few curls that are a little wonky here and there, my hair overall looks amazing! This is the first time I've ever gotten second day hair to work for me.

I hate the pineapple too. I had been considering this silk sleep cap, except some of the reviewers said it was too small:

Amazon.com: Pure Silk Night Sleep Cap Sleeping Cap Hat (Burgundy): Sports & Outdoors
Type 2B - 3A
Med-High Porosity (partial highlights), medium & corse mixed textures

CG Day 1: May 16, 2013

Poo: CJ Daily Fix Cleansing Condish (as needed)
CO: Tresemme Naturals Vibrantly Smooth Condish
RO&LI: CJ Beauticurls Argan & Olive Oil Daily Hair Condish
Styling: CJ Pattern Pusha or FSG, TRESemme Flawless Curls - Bouncy Curls Defining Gel, Giovanni LANaturals HardHold Gel (canopy only)
DT: CJ Curl Rehab, Coconut oil, SS Repairing PT

Techniques: Scrunch-n-pump, tshirt wrap
That happens with me too. First I shake out my hair, and then I just spritz my hair with water (and I mean, a lot of water) and then it starts to regain it's natural shape.

I can't pineapple because my hair is too short, so I wear it up for day 2. You all are scaring me...even when my hair gets longer the pineapple still might not work?

Anywho I've been eying this loc tube by Pretty Anntoinete. She has a long sleep cap as well, but the tighter fit of the loc tube seems more comfortable and like it would keep your hair from tangling as much.

Before my hair was long enough to put up in a pineapple, I was able to modify that to putting my hair up into two high bunches. I understand some people do more than two, but it was plenty for me.

I also tried holding my curls in place by wrapping a large square scarf (folded into a triangle) around my hair, similar to plopping, but with dry hair. That was fine in winter, but not so great for warm or hot weather. I use a silk pillowcase (very reasonbaly priced from Dharma Trading Co. here). I just sweep my hair up as I lay down, and let it lay on the pillow as it will. It tumbles freely as I toss and turn. Recently I've been doing something else, prior to going to bed, which is a very proactive approach to getting multi-day hair. I mix a good sized glob of AVG (for me about the size of a large gumball) in my hands with a few drops of jojoba oil, skim this over the outer surface of my hair, then scrunch my hair all over. I do this first while I'm getting ready for bed, and by the time I get into bed, it's formed a light gelcast over my hair, which protects it through the night, in combination with the silk. When I do this, I get the best next day curls, and barely need to do anything to my hair to achieve them (correct the part, shore up any wonky bangs/face framing hair with a light twist and a bobby pin), and the crunch has all been scrunched out in my sleep.
Peace,
Morgan
