Default Close to quitting CG method

I have been doing mod-CG routine for over two years. I treated it fairly well before it too - rarely heat styled and minical coloring but nothing since I went CG (lo-poo once or twice a week depending on season products I'm using). I'm still getting it right and solving some issues (tangles and high porosity) but overall my hair is healthy.

My problem is baby hair. I have it all over the top of my head and they are FRIZZY. No protein, moisture, styler has helped. Not damaged hair - just lots of shorter baby hair. I am high porosity and live in NY so deal with lots of dew issues and frizz overall. But even when the rest of my hair looks nice, the top doesn't. And that's the part that matters - it frames the face!

I've dealt with it but now I'm going to be working in a more corporate environment and I can't look like that for work.

I probably wont quit altogether but do need to find a frizz fighting styler and that probably will mean cones.

If CG method worked for every curly it would get the Nobel prize lol but it doesn't. Try something with the cone or cones lower on the ingredient list. I uses a cone conditioner occasionally but because of build up I wash with a watered down sulfate shampoo. Low poo and no poo weren't cutting it for me.

It's possible that you have new hair growth. Have you tried smoothing a harder hold gel over the area(s) where this is visible?

i thought about quitting because its so hard to find a cone free conditioner thats not a crappy brand. plus its pricey cone free. I noticed my scalp has gotten worse when i've gone cg. but my hair feels better and its growing faster cg i think.

Which techniques and or products have you tried in your CG journey so far for combating frizz? Maybe we could give you suggestions. Also, what's your current routine?

For un-CG suggestions, you might want to try Tigi Catwalk or *Moroccan Oil. (It's mostly silicones, little oil, but it helped with frizz when I wore my hair straight.) How prone you are to buildup is highly dependent on your properties. And you might not need to clarify as often as you think.

Also--yes. If they're baby hairs maybe smoothing gel would help. I have baby hairs and I smooth them down with KCCC at the end of styling.

If you have scalp buildup, try combining 1 tablespoon of brown sugar with the conditioner you're going to use to co-wash, then give yourself an extra good scalp massage when you do it. Some people need to do sugar scrubs on a fairly regular basis. I found that the first one I did helped tremendously. I repeated it about a week later, then haven't felt the need. I think I got rid of old buildup from products with cones, but I probably also learned how to do better scalp massaging in the process.

I've had really good luck with Nature's Gate conditioner. I get it from VitaCost when I'm putting in an order for Kiss My Face Upper Management, as their price for that is almost $3 less than usual (and I always order a few other things, like jojoba or argan oil – CSI 100% Pure Moroccan Argan Oil is on BOGO right now). 12 oz of the NG conditioner I like best (Lavender and Aloe) is $5.88, but some of their conditioners (such as the aloe without lavender) run $4.89 for 18 oz. (Theoretically, my local supermarket carries Nature's Gate in their organics section, but they've been remodelling for forever.) Shipping is free over $49 at VitaCost, but they sometimes do free shipping on orders over $25. If you're interested, PM me: new customers and whoever refers them both get $10 off an order.

I see you're in NY - would you consider consulting Devachan for help with this? They might find a solution for you.

It's not the brand that matters but the ingredients, there are loads of suitable conditioners - check out the Products tab on the main NC site, you can search 'silicone free'.

What is the diagnosis for your scalp issue?

Fellow NY'er and frizzy baby hair sufferer here too. I have found that no matter what I use on the top of my head they will rear their little butts when my hair dries. The only thing I have found that works is to section my hair and add product that way. The downside is I get very little volume from this. As I like my hair to have a bit of volume I add my products upside down and then right side up with a gentle smoothing over the canopy at the end. I also found that when I scrunch it disturbs them and makes them stick up. Also if I over manipulate my hair, game over. For me it was technique not products that allow me some control over them.

Also a fellow New Yorker here. I agree completely with this. I have thick hair and simply scrunching in product doesn't cut it for me. I use 2-3 layers (curl enhancer + hold product, then either a LI or I don't rinse out my RO conditioner). I scrunch in the first 1 (or 2) layers upside down, then flip right-side up and apply gel in 4 sections. First section is smoothed over canopy, mostly at my part line. Then I apply gel with combo rake and scrunch technique to right side, left side and back. Then I flip upside down again and scrunch one more blob into the length of my hair and plop. Yes, I use a large amount of gel< but product distribution was the key to controlling frizz, including those pesky baby hairs.

CG doesn't work for everyone. I gave it a try for YEARS on and off and I just couldn't get it to work for me. I still do a conditioner wash between regular old shampoos and I do like products that rinse out clean but I don't drive myself crazy over it anymore. You can modify it any way you like or just discard it altogether - do whatever works for you. I think lots of people on this board have tried thousands of combinations of every suggestion ever talked about! Myself included! LOL!

HG's: DEP Sport Gel or LA Looks Sport Gel - used over a leave in (alternate between moisturizing LI and a protein LI) and sometimes Giovanni LA Hold Hair Spritz

Method: Air dry 20 minutes, then diffuse for about 3 minutes for volume.

2/3 mix waves/curls - coarse, frizz prone, med. thick, porous, at-home color for gray, protein sensitive but I still need it sometimes, and I can't use glycerin in high humidity, NOT CG, wash with regular S&C 2x a week.

Very true. In my first 6 months here I grabbed products that were recommended, used them, and then discovered the formulation had changed and cones had been added, a few times. You still have to look at the labels. I was trying my hardest to follow by the book, kept having mishaps, the top of my head was trying to fly away, and I relaxed and laid the cones to it. No biggie. It's not like I hadn't had to shampoo before. I CW or LP most of the time but when it is needed I will use cones. I try to find something of the more water soluble variety or something that only one cone on the list, and I call the shampoo a good clarifying treatment. The simple fact is my hair needs it from time to time, and my DT or PT works better after a shampoo. My hair is in good shape, and that's really all that matters.

PS- I honestly don't worry about some fly aways in the canopy unless they have serious lift off. It's natural, and I think it's rather pretty to have a halo. And ime that looks much better on me than my hair looking too weighed down or wet from product.
