Curly Crops

I have been thinking about cropping my 3a/b curls, la Halle Berry. I was wondering if anyone had ever cut their hair that short, and how did it react. I know the worst that could happen is I'd have a lengthy and painful growing out period, but more information before I attempt this would be sincerely appriciated.
Hi there,

I'm not entirely sure of my hair type, I kind of think 3b-3c maybe, like julianna margulies hair, her has alwas reminded me of mine, but I'm open to correction here.

I wore my hair cropped very short for ages, and it looked good. It didnt curl at the root, so looked kind of straight but with texture. I grew it long again though because my face looked older with it, maybe because it was similar to my mums hair and it made me look like her, I dont know.

I found it very low maintenance, and it grew back very healthy. I will try to find a pic to show you how it looked.

But then again, too few to mention...
Zeldagoblin- ITA your hair looks like Julianna M's hair.
ManthaJay- I chopped ALL of my hair off to about 1/2in all over as a result of a early mild Midlife Crisis. It has taken 3years to grow back to the length I had it before (see my fotki). I did it because I wanted to see if it looked better short with a good cut, as opposed to all the terrible cuts I had when I was younger. And although I didn't like it any better than I did when I was young, I did notice some things...
My curl pattern is a 3a long, it was a tighter curl when shorter.
I used even more styling prods to get it to look good short than I did when it was long. I wanted that choppy, piecy faux-hawk (fake mohawk) look and it took some doing...I had to use the super dooper hold gels to get it to stay. And no 2nd day hair ever, I had to wash and style every day if I wanted it to look right.
Also my hair grows fairly fast for a curly and therefore spent too much IMO on cuts and trims so it was not cost eff. for me. My biggest thing was that I really like my hair and when it was short there wasn't enough of it to enjoy.
This is just me but I think short hair is more of a commitment than long hair, especially for curlies.

Hi there, I totally agree with what Echokitten has said about short hair, I never realised how curly my hair was until I got it cut to about jaw level. Anyway, you're right about there's never a chance of second day hair, put it this way, any of you familiar with how Russel Brand looks like??? well thats my hair EVERY single morning when I wake up, so literally, I have to start from scratch!!! I'm glad that I got it cut though as I would never have seen my curl potential and now that I am growing my hair out I am also armed with the right kind of tools to be able to look after my curls properly, roll on this time next year so I can see what my hair looks like LONG!!!

I cropped my 3b hair very short and it got MORE curly -- nothing like Halle Berry. If you have that image in your mind, I would be careful because it's hard to know exactly what your hair will do. While some curlies may not curl so much, there are some of us who get EXTRA curly very short... or I did at least.

And the growing out process was PAINFUL. I wore hats for a year. Not to discourage you at all, but just think long and hard about it.
3B with some 3a. Fell off but am now back on the CG bandwagon and looking for my HG products.
Zeldagoblin well After looking at your fotik, I have to differ on the Julianna M's hair comment. Zeldagoblin your hair is straighter than hers. About 2 years ago I happened to be minding my own business standing in line at the Starbucks at Bryant Park and I was admiring the lady's jet black curly hair in front of me. It wasn't until she went to the bar to pick up her order I relaised it was Julianna M herself. I got an up close and personal look at her hair....it was to die for. It was perfect, really perfect. Trust me. It almost looked like she used a curling iron each curl was perfectly even from root to end exactly the same size. If I hadn't spent all my time explaining to my boyfriend who she was I would have gotten her autograph!!!

ManthaJay- I have never cut my hair short. It doesn't look good on me. YOu might be wondering how I know that...I went to a wig shop. They are always happy to let you try stuff on. I would advise you to go try some short wiggs on to see how a short style would look on you to get a ballpark idea.

I have 3a hair, and I chopped it into a really short pixie cut about a year ago. It came out just slightly wavy (my curls don't really start until an inch or two past my roots). The stylist thinned the hell out of it because I have a ton of hair, and it is necessary to remove some of the bulk for that type of style. It was very low maintenance - just put in some hair wax, mess it up a little, and go. I did have to wash it every day, because of the product I used and the fact that it stuck straight up in the morning when I got out of bed

Here is a link to a couple of pictures, just to give you an idea of the shortness and the texture: http://siobhan-genie.livejournal.com/56170.html

I'd say go for it - it was fun, but you will be very lightheaded when you get up from that chair!
Hair type: 3A. Almost chin length with Bettie bangs. Currently using GF Curl & Shine S/C, leave in and jojoba oil. Colored black. Check out my curly journal on this site!

My mom has an awesome 3b fro, and although the length is short, it definitley makes her look younger. If your face shape fits the style, I say go for it!

Hey Z - After checking out your pics, I'd say you're a 2c/3a. Perhaps an above the shoulders cut might be the way to go to see how your curls react. Then, if you like the short, you can go back and get it even shorter, a la Halle.
2b/3a.
I worked up to a pixie cut over the course of several years, and had it pixie short for about a year with a flippy spiky style (I loved this super stiff spiker cream - would hold anything anywhere I put it). I'm a 3a-b, but the curl patter varies a lot. Anyway, it was super cute, and my hair curled less than it does longer.

I'm sort of growing it out from neglect (it's almost 5.5" long all over now) and am enjoying watching my curls reform.
Thanks everyone for sharing! I have a bob right now that I think is really cute, but I'm thinking about a change. I have until Saturday to make up my mind, and all of your experiences definitely help.
I have a different hair type than most of the posters on this thread, but I wear my hair very short. In my case, my hair turned out curlier after I chopped it off. So what? I don't understand why everyone keeps bringing that up as if it's a negative thing. Your hair might be curlier, it might look almost straight depending on your hair type. But, as long as you get a good cut with a good shape, it will look great.

I think you should go ahead and do it. It's only hair, and you can always grow it back out if you don't like it. Since your hair is already bob-length, it won't take long at all to get it back to to there if you don't like your pixie cut.
