My 2nd day hair dilemma

Sorry for making another thread but here goes:

You may have seen on my other thread/s I used gel for the first time yesterday, I got good hold and definition. Overnight (despite pineappling) my waves were completely destroyed. I decided as I'm in all day today, I'll experiment. I have searched and searchednfor second day hair ideas and unfortunately, I have noticed that on non-wash days, if my hair gets damp or wet, it dries greasy - this means most, if not all of the 2nd day hair solutions would not work for me. Anyway, I decided to scrunch a dollop of gel into my (dry) hair. I did wet my palms beforehand, though as you can imagine it was quite sticky. I left it for 5 mins for the gel to harden then SOTC. I knew I wouldn't get big/thick clumps due to not using water, I was expecting thin clumps. What I DID get was super skinny clumps. Here:

As I said, I didn't expect to get thick clumps so i'm not totally disappointed. It was quite hard to SOTC fully but I've managed it now and my hair does feel very soft mostly. It also has the wet-look to it that I don't like - but I think that might be because of the stringyness?

Does anyone have any tips for 2nd day hair that doesn't involve water? Or atleast very little water? Any other tips will be appreciated. TIA!

I have very dense, shorter hair and was trying to find a solution for forever! What finally worked for me was *dampening* my hair (not too wet or you'll wake up wet), and braiding it into 8 separate braids. If you have less dense hair you can use less braids. Then I put my braids into a sleep cap. When I get up, I take them out and fluff, then apply product if I feel I need to after running wet hands over my hair a couple times - just enough to make the top layer pliable.

Also, have you tried just fluffing upside down in the morning? This has started working for me intermittently. Again, apply a tiny bit of product if you need to control any frizz.

NP/LP: KMF Whenever Conditioner/ YTCucs

DT: Coconut Oil + scalp massage
OIL/STYLER: SM Elixir / KCCC
COLOR: henna, amla & indigo
I have the same problem. I never, ever use gel on the second day because it just makes it frizzer and crunchy. Water doesn't really work for me either. Right now I am experimenting with sprays. I've used Deva's Mister Right, which is ok but frizzes my hair. John Frieda's Dream Curls frizzes even more. I liked the Redken curl spray, but it is a little crunchy. My most recent purchase (which was expensive) was the Davines Sea Salt Primer for Wizards. At $30, I was expecting a miracle and didn't really get it. However, it *did* fluff my curls and wasn't crunchy. It creates a matte effect which is a little weird.

If your hair is used to being washed every day, it will take some time to retrain your body that it doesn't have to produce that much oil. I have been CG since June and now no-poo just once a week.

Hang in there--keep experimenting! The great thing about curly/wavy hair is that if you make a mistake, it's easy to pull it back in a messy bun and still look fabulous. Embrace the mess!
I've used a hair spray bottle for years to get 2nd (to 6th) day hair. I'd simply spray water on it, apply a tiny bit of product et voila!

I still do that sometimes, but mostly when I'm travelling. When I'm home, I either shower in the morning and wet and style my hair while in the shower, or I use just the shower head when I don't have enough time to get in the shower.

Thanks for the replies. After experimenting, I've discovered my hair can handle a little water on non wash days so I'll try and figure out a way to make the most of it.

My entire curly life I've never been able to have second day curls, let alone third day, until this week. My daughter brought me home some Tigi Curls Rock Curl Booster Spray. It's an aerosol can. I wasn't sure what the heck I was going to use it for but a lot of reviews said it was good for refreshing second day hair so I decided is try it. It worked. It worked well. Yesterday I had third day hair, not up in a bun, but actual curls. I washed my hair today and I'm going to try it again tomorrow and the next day and see if it works again.

Actually I just looked at my can and it's PEG-dimethicone and that is supposed to be water soluble.

My hair is SUPER fine and I have the same problem. Anything weighs it down really which is why I have to redo it every day.
Ooh, I will have to try that!
