Default Shea Butter as a Conditioner or Leave-In

Just wondering how one would use Shea Butter as a conditioner or a leave-in since, if I remember correctly, it's pretty firm like semi-hard butter.

Do you just use the shea butter alone and the rinse and apply more for a leave-in?

My 3b hair is VERY dry and I would love to try this, but don't want to get my hair too gunky.

Shea butter is pretty thick, so you have to use alittle at a time if you haven't used it before. When I would used it, I'd rub about a dime size(or less) to four sections, mixed with some virgin coconut oil. Sometimes, I'd mix it ahead of time to make it easier. I think I used maybe a tbsp of shea and a tsp of coconut oil(I didn't use the whole thing). I can't really remember.

It makes the hair really soft, but doesn't do much to define, and can weigh down your curls. So, if your hair is easily weighed down, I wouldn't use too much.

If you want, you could do a dt with this by heating maybe some coconut, avocado(or whatever oils you like), and then mixing in the shea butter. Once mixed, apply to dry hair and leave on for as long as you can. I think I left it on for about an hour while cleaning up(I used a heated cap). I rinsed it out, then proceeded to shampoo and/or condition, style, and air-dry. I was left with really soft curls.

Good to know about the shea butter possibly weighing my curls down! Thanks! I will probably just attempt to use it as a DT at first and then see if I can work it into my conditioning routine.

Your too kind

aerohead... i get mine from mariposa import, they're based in eastern europe so you pay a little for postage but i've always had excellent customer service and a bottle lasts me a long time so i recon my locks are worth it!! (I also get all my beloved Jessicurl stuff from her too!)

Default shea butter

My hair doesn't like butters/oil, but if I were to use per say Curl Junkie Curl rehab, it has shea butter, do you think that stuff will come out of my hair when I just rinse that DT out or does it stay in your hair??? That's what I don't want!

I often wondered about this .. is coconut oil a sealant or a moisturiser? Is Shea a sealant or moisturiser? I always thought Shea butter was a sealant as it can't penetrate the hair yet when I use it, it leaves my hair soft and nice.. ?? I know some people use coconut oil as a leave in but others argue that leave ins have be water based and sealants oil based.. ??

Could you also use glycerine under a sealant like Shea butter?

I'm not an expert on sealants, but I'll put my .02 in. Shea butter is a moisturizer, but it is thick enough to use as a sealant. All oils are sealants.

Do a search for sealants and threads will come up. I know that the 4a board had many threads like this, and NC long-times like Redcelticcurls and others really understand the difference in how humectants and oils work.

oils and butters tends to be sealants. Sealants seals in moisture. The best moisture is water. Humacents, like honey, sttracts moisture, like water.

So I shouldn't add humectants under a sealant.. just wanted to make sure .. I need anti humectants now that the dew points are at 19C today, expecting to get higher.. I guess the Shea butter and coconut oil will be good.
