TYRA dissing curly hair??

Hi all,

I don't know if anyone saw the hair episode on the tyra banks show, but they had these gals on with 'horrible hair' (the episode was called "America's Worst Hair) and these gals had I'm guessing curly hair, it was just curly hair totally blown out badly and frizzed up, and yup you guessed it: each one of them comes out straight and shiny.

Why don't they educate people on how to work with curly hair, instead of just changing it? I know it has more dramatic effect when someone with frizzy insane looking hair comes out stick straight...but still....it would be great if JUST ONCE they would celebrate a beautiful head of curls instead of trying to 'tame' it....

even tyra quoted "I don't know how you guys tamed that mop"

grrrrrr :x

I saw it, and told DH just watch they are all gonna come out with straight hair, of coarse I was right. I asumme that the 2 stylist guys don't know how to style curly hair. One said I was gonna do it curly but straighter is easier. Did you see that part?

CurlyQTPie 03-02-2007 10:17 AM

I think Tyra deserves a pass on this one. She talks about hair a lot and admits that she has "hair issues", which is why she constantly wears fake, blonde, STRAIGHT hair. She is totally aware that there is this bias in society and that people seek to imulate the standard of beauty which is long, straight hair.

I didn't see it but from what you described, it sounds like maybe the curls are brushed out? If that's the case, of course they have terrible hair, they probably manipulated these poor women into getting their lovely curls all brushed and teased so that it looked like they had horrible hair and then they'd have a reason to do a hair make over show. I'm sure they didn't need anything done to their hair before getting on the show.

curlylew66 03-02-2007 05:33 PM

Well, I sent a note to the show. 8)

Yeah, Curlylew66! Good for you. Share it if you happen to hear back from them.

Thats exactly how it looked to me. I know, because before I found this wonderful NC site, thats what I used to do, and I would wonder why on earth my hair was so bad. I get frustrated with many makeover shows (tho I still absolutely love to watch them) because 99% of the time they will make a curly girl straight.

Once I remember on 'What Not To Wear" they had a girl with beautiful curly hair and after he cut it he put mousse in it and dried it with a diffuser. It looked gorgeous when he was done. But honestly thats one of the few times I can remember when shows left curly hair alone. Kuddo's to nick on what not to wear!

I don't think she deserves a pass. She obviously has self esteem issues.
And those awful fake looking wigs she wears are totally obvious, ugly and disgusting to me.

I want to clarify that I am not trying to attack anyone here. But that is just my opinion and I am entitled to it.

Cheers.

totally agree

those wigs are so fake! And they're blond and they're so freaking straight it's terrible.
ditto to everybody's post a million times over.

I think it's says a lot about our society that a women who is considered so beautiful can have such major hang-ups about her appearance. I know no one's perfect, but I think we try to obtain such unrealistic ideals that even those that are CLOSE to perfect feel inadequate.

I guess some people would feel comforted by the fact that even Tyra Banks, as gorgeous and successful as she is, still has her insecurities. I actually find it v. upsetting. I mean, if a former supermodel's not "good enough", how can I ever be?

Oh, and I personally doubt Brad Pitt or George Clooney or Denzel Washington (to name a few) ever worry about crows feet or bad hair days, b/c for whatever reason the standards for male beauty seem to be much more realistic...

Sorry to run away w/ the post... just wanted to share...

I agree - Nick on "What Not To Wear" is one of the very few stylists I've seen who will work with curly hair, rather than against it. I think it may be because he's a curly himself. Makeover shows need more like him - and so do salons. I've given up on finding a stylist who knows how to style my hair curly. When I get a cut, I either leave with my hair wet or let them do a blowout. Whenever someone has tried to make me curly, it's, well, not pretty.

Tyra calling cyrly hair a "mop" is definitely unacceptable. I don't care if she has issues with her hair. She needs to deal with them, instead of taking them out on other people.

I will. I think it would be great if she filled her audience with all curlies and have Jessicurl there to do a demo.
I mean...she made such a big issue about the personal attack against her weight and made a statement by having her entire audience sit in those red swimsuits!
I can't remember exactly what I typed in the letter I sent to her site.
I was nice yet annoyed enough that they should respond

I COMPLETELY agree..... I never let the stylist style my hair anymore. My latest stylist doesn't even have a diffuser! So I just leave with it damp. I've never had a stylist who could work with curly hair. This gal I have now does great color and a decent trim, so I'll just take care of the styling and drying myself, thank you! LOL :-D

I COMPLETELY agree here too. I was frankly quite surprised, here she will delve deep into all these personal issues, usually concerning looks and insecurities, yet she sits there with obvious fake hair.... with all her money I'd think she could afford better weaves, etc (tho I do like her curly looks)

that would make a great show for her....she should do a hair show and have women with all kinds of hair issues, and teach them how to work with what they've got instead of 'changing' it to meet societys standards. She could have Nick from what not to wear as the main stylist who teaches what not to do to curly hair!

Does anyone watch that show "The Soup" on the E Network? Its a show that spoofs on tv shows and hollywood mishaps....tyra is a constant spoof item: they always make fun of her for being so self absorbed. Its true! Anyway its a funny show and I will still watch tyra from time to time.... and if Nick from what not to wear ever wants to do his own show, I'll be his biggest fan! :-)

Eilonwy 03-08-2007 01:39 AM

I've only seen that show a few times. Each time, "archive footage" showed that the female guest has naturally curly hair, and each time her hair was styled straight for the show.

Raindiamonds 03-08-2007 05:33 PM

I didn't see the show on it.
I think curly hair is beautiful and that she is wrong.

Maury is NOTORIOUS for this!! They had this bi-racial girl on the show once and brushed her hair out until it was a huge frizzball. It could have been a nice looking afro if they would have styled it properly. Of course she hated her hair and so did all of her friends. So they straighten her hair (which could have been done at home) and viola! She has tons of friends and looks INSTANTLY better. So would I, if my hair resembled a huge dried out brillo pad like hers did.

I saw that Maury show, in fact I posted here about it. That show infuriated both me and my mom. Even she said she never saw 'before' hair look so bad. And of course she came out stick straight (like she could do THAT every day!) They had her family on the show, lamenting about how this poor girl styles her hair for 2 hours every day and it comes out this bad.....and how she constantly *****es about her hair. I am so naive that I thought they would give her a lesson on caring for her hair to make it better, tips on fighting frizz, etc....not ironing the life out of it!

I have a friend who knows someone that was on the Style Network on that show "How Do I Look"...and tho that show focuses mostly on clothes, they really 'frumped her up' for her before shots, and they left her hair all stringy and dirty....as if she walks around like that every day. My friend was shocked at the 'before' images and said while she needed some help, she didn't look like THAT beforehand!

I guess its all about the "WOW" factor of a dramatic change. But still they are ignoring a huge population of us curlies that can actually use some advice once in a while. And to see one of these makeover victims come out with a head of beautiful curly hair would thrill me so much that I again would post here! :-)

But sadly I'm thinking that post will never happen....
