Ouidad Cut Scheduled!!

I wasn't sure which salon I should go to (devachan or Ouidad). I finally decided to go back to Ouidad where I got a great cut back in 2009. After getting over the anticipated high cost, I made the appointment.

NYC Salon appointment for December 6 :blob4::blob4::blob4::blob4:

I'll post before and pics

How much does a Ouidad cut cost in NYC?

Here in Central MA they wanted about $100.

Marixpress 11-19-2013 12:34 PM

At "home base" they advertise between $125 and $150, plus any additional treatments (eg. deep condition). *"Prices may vary depending on hair length, thickness or other factors to be determined by your Ouidad Stylist."

I usually tip 20% but I'm not sure if the same percentage should be given to a hair sylist. The tip could end up being $40. Does that sound right??

KellyofCurls 11-19-2013 07:27 PM

eeek... I've never paid more than 25/30 for a hair cut. I tip $5 regardless of how much it costs. I dunno... I've never tipped a percentage.

Marixpress 12-11-2013 09:27 AM

I was cut by wonderful stylist named Liz. The total cut and styling came out to $130 before tip. The after result was nothing to write home about so I'm not going to post an after pic. I actually prefer my styling with a simple Shea Moisture milk and ecostyler gel.

I told Liz I was "curly girl" so she used a shampoo without sulfates. However, the conditioner, gel, pomade and styling mist all contained at least one silicone. What's worse is that pretty much every product contained a protein. The last time I got a cut here my hair was so light that I could literally feel the spirals bouncing with each step. There was none of that this time.

If I could go back and do it over, I would go to Devachan because their products are more curly girl friendly.

Morgan_Adcock 12-11-2013 10:20 AM

Maybe once you've clarified you'll love the cut.

Quite honestly, the one thing about my Devachan cut that I wasn't thrilled with was all the product on my hair. However, once I'd washed and styled it myself, I loved it, and I just kept on loving it more for about seven months (until I started noticing split ends and fairy knots).

sixelamy 12-11-2013 12:46 PM

I was going to say something similar as Morgan did - don't judge the haircut based on the product that they used. I never judge a cut anymore until I have washed and styled it myself. It doesn't hurt to clarify after a salon visit.

I'm explaining the process just in case anyone is wondering.

I know their procedure is to deep condition before cutting, which would cost me $90 at the salon, so I used a little bottle of their 12 Minute Deep Conditioning that I've had kicking around for a while at home and saved myself the extra expense.

I arrived at the salon about 15 minutes early. I was given a clipboard and questionnaire that listed questions like "How much time to you spend styling hair?" and "What would you like to gain from this visit?" - I asked for more volume, layers and a fuller look. My stylist (Liz) then greeted me with a warm smile and brought me to her station for a consultation. I let her know that I was using the curly girl method.

Next, she walked me over to the sink and sat me down on a super comfy massaging chair. She shampooed me with sulfate free Curl Recovery Ultra Nourishing Cleansing Oil because I had mentioned being CG. She followed up with Climate Control Conditioner because it was pouring rain outside.

Back at her station she took her sweet time cutting my hair. It was so relaxing that I felt my eyes get heavy and I bet I could have drifted away lol After a while when she was satisfied with the cut, she sectioned my hair in 6 -8 sections and began applying Climate Control Gel a nickle to quarter amount each section (way too much IMO). It was applied by smoothing, raking, and gently shaking. Next she used Playcurl Volumizing Foam scrunched in. Then she scrunched out the extra water and product with a towel and diffused until fully dry (their policy). The next step was to smooth in Clear Control Pomade for sealing and shine I guess. The last steps were to blow out the crunch (without diffuser) to break up my curls and to volumize then set with Styling Mist.

Some things she told me along the way: That it's important to deep condition after using proteins (which ALOT of their products contain). She also said that the Playcurl mousse was not to be used alone, but layered on top of a gel or other styling product. Back in the day, I used to wear the Playcurl alone and I loved it because my hair was so light and bouncy.

When the visit was over, she filled out a "Your Personal Prescription" card with a list of every product used and how to use them all. My hair lacked volume and felt that protein straw-like feeling. I didn't blame Liz for any of this. She did a great job. It was the products that my hair didn't take well to. Most of the trimming took place behind my head because I already layered around my face a few months ago myself out of frustration. I've had a chance to clarify and style on my own. I like it better than what it used to be but I would like more shorter layers.

I'm uploading before and after pics below. My stupid smart phone doesn't take great pics so keep in mind that it looked a little better in person.

So I decided to try out Devachan and used my 16 year old daughter as a guinea pig. It's going to be tough reviewing our experience without comparing the two salons. I'll put my comparisons in parenthesis.

Devachan Soho -Broadway location

We took the subway which left us less about a block away from the salon. (Ouidad is about 2 streets and 3 avenues away from the train most convenient to me.) We walked in the building and down the stairs to a massive and bright salon. (Ouidad is quite dim, kind of romantic lighting.) It smells like heavenly incense and light relaxing music was playing throughout the place. Not too loud and not too soft. We checked our coats with a friendly coat check attendant who handed us a silky satin robe, and then we sat back on the waiting couch where we were offered water, tea, soda, etc. (Ouidad has a plain water and a lemon infused self-help glass water pitchers) served in a champagne glass. I notice everyone that works there is sporting to die for curly do's. (Ouidad's receptionists both had blown out hair the day I went.) I was scoping out the women leaving the salon and dying of curl envy. (I was not impressed with any of the clients' hair leaving Ouidad.) I also noticed a nail and make-up station.

The stylist's assistant sat us down, and made sure we were comfortable. Each hairdressers chair is equipped with an IPAD!! We were very happy with our stylist, Mia. She was knowledgeable and friendly. She asked my daughter what she would like to have done to her hair. She made some suggestions without being pushy. Then she cut the hair dry, curl by curl. Even dry I could see my daughter's swavy hair coming to life. I told Mia I received a Ouidad cut last month and she joked "Oui-don't" haha

Next, her hair was low poo'd, no poo'd then conditioned with One Condition by the stylist assistant. She gave my daughter pointers on how to wash and condition. She even had my daughter touch her hair when it was perfectly conditioned to "seaweed" wet to teach her how it should feel when in the shower. The only styler they used was the plainly named "Devacurl Styling Cream which was added while still at the washing station into soaking wet hair. The washing stations were breathtaking lol There was a soft white net hanging - kinda like a mosquito net- around each reclined cushioned lounge chair. My daughter was worried about the problem she has at EVERY salon - she is too short to totally put her head in the sink water always goes down her back. Well that didn't happen here because you're practically lying flat with a pillow under your knees. It looked so relaxing - I was jelly! haha They allowed me to sit by my daughter the entire time which was appreciated.

After my daughter sat back in the hairdresser's chair, the assistant asked her to lean her head all the way back so that her dripping hair hanged straight down. It was then scrunched to release extra water and to form those beautiful S shapes. Then she scrunched again this time using wads of paper towels. Carefully and gently. Several clips were placed about at the roots then they brought the hooded dryer down over her head to dry for about 20 minutes. She browsed cuddly animals on Reddit while her hair dried thanks to that handy dandy iPad. Mia came back over after about 18 minutes and moved the hooded drier from my daughter's crown and positioned it near her ends for another 15 minutes. My daughter has super LP and it usually takes forever to dry. Mia made sure the cut was just right with a couple more snips. While waiting for my daughter's hair to dry I was able to look around and see Mia and another stylist each working with their clients who had huge coils afros. They weren't intimidated and they didn't even try to thin them out. They both received glorious cuts.

When it was done, my daughter had CURLS!! No waves. It was amazing, defined and light. I couldn't believe my eyes. Not a stitch of frizz. The only down side is I don't like the scent of their products. Such a shame. The cost came to $120 before tip, $10 less than Ouidad and 2x the amount of hair. The receptionist handed me a membership card to put on my key ring for me to rack up points with each product purchase that convert to dollars after a certain amount.

Afterwards, we went to Ricky's to buy the Devacurl products which we knew were on sale hehe. Overall, best salon experience to date. Wonderful results and totally worth the price. I am tempted to go and touch up my cut (I feel I could use some more shorter layers in the back) or even just for them to style me. It was simply uuuuuhhhmazing.

What a lovely experience for your daughter. What I wouldn't have given to have such a thing when I was 16. Or even now!

DaniGirl88 01-14-2014 07:38 AM

That sounds like such an amazing experience! Great customer service and a nice atmosphere all around. So glad you and your daughter enjoyed it!

And an iPad?!?! I need to go there! That sounds fancy! =)
