2014 One Inch Per Month Challenge

Like Tree436Likes

Hey guys I haven't posted here since 2nd feb so just wanted to tell you my results so far. I started the ghe challenge on the 2nd feb and stayed on it for 2 weeks before i quit. The quitting was due to a phase I was going through at the time which caused me to lose almost all interest in my hair plus I was having a serious dandruff problem and using this method was making it worse. However, my interest has recently been restored and on Monday I looked in the mirror to realise my hair has grown ALOT . My hair has grown around 2 inches almost everywhere and 2 1/2 inches at the nape. I'm really surprised at this and don't know whether doing the ghe challenge for the first 2 weeks contributed to it. I'll post a picture later on.

Conditioner: still trying stuff. Atm: DnL Au Naturale Knot-out Conditioner
DC: Anything at hand. Suggestions?

Gel: Curls Unleashed Set it off Curls Boosting Jelly
Asagi! It's so nice to have you back!

@PrettyCurls, thank you! The coils are definitely worth trying. Until I found flaxseed gel and curl cream, it was one of the only "set" styles I could manage to do and keep on my hair.

That being said, I think I've found a HG for my hair! I have to tweak it very slightly, but I FREAKING LOVE IAGIRL'S CURL CREAM! I got four days out of a wash and go- if I had been covering my hair at night, and not put a little coconut milk on it I would have had more days. This has thrown off my whole haircare regimen though, so I do have some mixed feelings about the flaxseed thing. They are admittedly tiny considering the fact that I am only having to adjust wash days, etc. The day before a wash day I took separate sections to put in a curlformer, a twist, a 3-strand twist, and a finger coil after applying plain on flaxseed gel. The next morning I was still able to separate the curls apart for volume without losing definition. This is definitely new territory for me. I also need to address frizz on my canopy but its still not so bad that I can't live with it. Well it's basically frizz at my part, which appears to be a looser curl patter than the rest of my hair framing my face. I plan on getting a goosefootprints analysis next month. =)

Exercise wise, I have not been running. My achilles tendon is still acting up. I've been using a new gadget that our department has called a body media armband. I'm using myself and the free 3 months before I pay for services to collect activity and nutrition data that I can use in assignments for my students. I need to get better with actually putting in my foods and do some cleaning up of my diet that I've fallen into lately. It's nice living with my parents until I can build up savings but they do things like buy cookies, crackers, chips, and other such snacks that I don't buy because of a lack of control in myself. I usually catch myself before it gets bad, but it's still often enough that I need to change. I'd gained a little weight from not running, but I'm starting to lose it now that I've realized that I may not be back to running next week. So I've been making sure to move in some way anywhere from an hour to 2 hours every day at a moderate pace instead of more vigorous work that I got from running. I'm also lifting more often, which I had also started slacking on.

@Shaylanay crazy good results!!! Your hair looks amazing, congrats!

My hair is kind of low and steady' right now. I think I'm at that awkward just past SL hair (when curly), which I feel is a hump it takes a while to get over. IMO hair seems to appear to grow slowest when going from SL to APL.

So now I'm getting a bit impatient! Lol.

  1. Curl type: 2a upto ears, 2c ears to half neck, 3a after that, and it has nothing to do with the cut.
  2. Strand thickness: medium I think
  3. Porosity: low right now (healthy )
  4. Current length (including a photo if possible): Short in the back, bobbish-shaggy in the front, so around chin lenght.
  5. The length I aim for: shoulder or collarbone.
  6. The challenge rules that I commit to: (plz pick from the blue list above) ugh I gess all and specially STOP TRIMMING everytime it looks bad! Have to invest on pretty hair accessories and a million bobby pins.

  7. Other techniques I intend to use for hair growth and retention. For example:
    • low poo and co-washing

Not much more untill it grows some.

  8. Techniques and products you will use to keep your hair strong and moisturized. For example:
    • DC (what with? How often?) Uhhh not figured that out yet
    • PT (what with? How often?) Not planning to yet, but I use henna conditioner.
    • Leave in product: a bit of oil and still experimenting
    • LOC method? No way, hair hates layers of product.
Its good you found an HG!

Good luck getting back on track with the diet. I can really relate. I care for my mom (heart attack/kidney surgery) and she is the same way with the cakes etc.

Did the flexirod set. I learned that I need to use the grey and purple or larger flexi rods in order to get the type of curl I want. The orange ones were too shirley templeish and I got a lot of frizz as I couldn't get the hair to lay right on them. The hair was bulky on them.

The gray ones came out kind of shirley temple ish but not so much.

I learned that my hair did not dry all the way, but there were fewer snarls at the ends of my hair.

But the curls look much better than when I did them on the gray perm rods and more of my length shows.

I think next time I will roll the hair in the middle of the flexirod instead of spiraling it down the length.

I have also decided to back off the protein.

I just washed with castille soap. Left in v05. Used ouidad climate control and sealed with oil.

It's been exactly a month since I took a picture last, after I got my hair cut. I have to say, I am pretty shocked! And here my boyfriend thought I was crazy doing all my oil treatments and scalp massages.

But I have been doing regular scalp massages, and I guess it helps.

My hair grows fast anyway.. but dang!!!

Sorry for your cut fail. I went through that last year, it sucks Live and learn!

So, I'm in! It's been hard to grow my hair past the length it is now, since I am prone to split-ends and therefore have to get more trims. So the main thing for me is to cut out diffusing everyday and be more proactive about adding moisture to my hair and sealing it in with oil.

Curl type: 3a/2c
Porosity: high porosity
Current length: almost arm-pit length
The length I aim for: waist length
The challenge rules that I commit to:
Pretty much everything. I'm including the diffuser in with heat-stylers for myself, since I am prone to split ends on the canopy. Trying to master clipping for more volume.

Other techniques I intend to use for hair growth and retention. For example:
Protective styling: bunning
Once a week low-poo, co-wash rest of the week

Techniques and products you will use to keep your hair strong and moisturized:
Coconut oil as a weekly pre-poo.
DC: Once a week with regular conditioner (Tresemme naturals) plus honey and olive oil. I think my hair loves honey!
PT: Still trying to figure out if my hair needs this
Leave in product: Tresemme naturals

Others (plz specify): henna once a month
@sixelamy, that is awesome growth!

@prettycurls, I'd love to see some pictures if you've got them! I've been getting curious about flexirods but haven't invested in them yet.

I was playing with my niece today and she boinged my curls in my bang area only for me to find that they mostly reach my upper lip now! Even my sides with the tighter curl pattern is hitting mid neck now instead of my jawbone like last month. Yay for growth!

Im joining ! Im ready to grow out my TWA
Congrats lolo! Good for you on the growth!

I don't think I will do the flexi rod again anytime soon. My hair was soo stiff. I also think I am going to back off of the protein heavy/Ouidad products. I think I could have skipped the gel on the flexirod set because my hair was too firm. Either that or it was the protein in the gel.

I need to get it together with the pics, but I have been running so. I am full time student, looking for work, trying to trouble shoot my computer, and editing my first feature film. All while caretaking.

There are some days I only get 4 hours of sleep or less.

So I cowashed with vo5 to get my hair to "defirm" LOL! Then I tried the loc method for the first time. I was shocked. Adding oil to my hair immediately after water made it look amazing! My curls popped and I had definition down to the root, which is sometimey for me. I also had definition around my hairline. I wonder if I need to mix oil and honey and call it a day. No more products - just oil and honey.

Then I applied the conditioner and sealed with more oil. No gel. Then made 6 large chunky twists. My hair is still drying now.

I think I am going to continue to co wash and see what happens.

Oh...and I really needed that new super wide tooth comb.
