personal (hair) problems

I have type 3a curls. The problem I'm always faced with is lack of volume. Whenever I first wash my hair, the volume is nice, but I still want more. Then by my 2nd day, my roots are flat and my tips are frizzy and dry, so I end up just putting it in a bun.

And I don't know about you guys, but my hair takes FOREVER to air dry. like 8 hours to air dry! I diffuse my hair every time I wash my hair. I know that can't be good for my curls, and is probably why my tips always end up dry.

I need help. Does anyone know any tips for quicker air drying, 2nd day hair, and volume?
Diffusing is a lot better than most things you can do for your hair! Also it sounds like you may have low porosity hair, since it take so long for your hair to dry? Heat helps get product into the hair cuticle, so this can be helpful. Try diffusing with your head upside down on 2nd day. And also you can tip your head upside down and fluff underneath at the roots and give your head a little shake and that should help with volume too.

2c-3a - coarse - normal-high porosity - high density - growing out to donate

NP/LP: KMF Whenever Conditioner/ YTCucs
RO/LI: Sevi Pumpkin Seed DC / CJ Argan & Olive Oil, KCKT, YTBbs
DT: Coconut Oil + scalp massage
OIL/STYLER: SM Elixir / KCCC
COLOR: henna, amla & indigo
Agree diffusing is not necessarily bad: just use a low temperature setting, don't concentrate on one area, use proven heat protectant ingredients (eg. glycerin, propylene glycol, hydrolysed protein, certain polyquats), don't diffuse to bone dry.

One study suggested that leaving hair wet for long periods is more damaging than speeding that up gently. Check out the Natural Haven blog for information on temperatures, cuticle cracking, this study.

Doing everything upside down from washing to diffusing helps me with volume as does which products (gel, conditioner) contact the roots. Batiste dry shampoo XXL Volume feels a bit like hairspray when in but the only extra ingredient over the regular Batiste is silica talc.

I used to get frizzy ends when I diffused, coconut oil solved that problem.

What do u do at night? Maybe your night routine is influencing the lack of volume in the morning? Maybe pineappling at night very loosely. Or putting all your hair in a silk bonnet on top of your hair. You could try plopping on second day hair. Also I third diffusing as well.

I agree that diffusing can be a huge help. In addition to what others have said, I would add that using a professional dryer with a ceramic (instead of coil) heater, which produces gentler and more even infra-red heat (with negative ions) can make a big difference.

Looking for new products and methods to try!

I do the pineapple thing and I have a silk bonnet. I find that the pineapple method doesn't work that well for me. I don't know if It's because i keep the scrungy too close to my scalp, maybe. And I'm too nervous to diffuse in the morning because my hair is super dry in the morning. My main focus is trying to hydrate it, but then it get all frizzy and all the product gunks, so I just end up putting it in a bun.
Maybe try a pineapple with a looser ponytail. Its all about trial and error so don't be afraid to try something that you might not feel right about because you never know!

My hair frizzes if I spray it, so I spray my homemade refresher on my hands and dampen my hair lightly by sandwiching my hair between my hands, and quickly running them down the length two or three times. Then I dampen the roots by scrubbing them lightly with damp fingertips, and follow that with scrunching.

Another option which I find very helpful, especially when my hair seems to be getting dry, is to mist it with my Q-Redew. The Q-Redew is also helpful for opening the cuticle when I'm doing a deep treatment.
Peace,
Morgan
