High/ Medium Porosity?

I first thought I was low porosity and then I decided to do more research.

I did the water strand test-found out it was junk science so I don't count that.

I ran my finger up my hair strand, my whole strand isnt filled with bumps just a couple. And some more than others.

With product my hair can take from 3 hours to the morning after to dry. (My hair is really trying to make this difficult for me lol)

I could moisturize Wednesday evening, Thursday morning it's not totally dry but drier then I'd like it. Then other days my hair can stay moisturized up until 3-4 days!

BTW, I have high density hair if that helps

How easily does your hair wet, how long does it take to dry without product? Any old damage that you know of (heat, chemicals)?

The finger slide test is junk science too IMO, you could be feeling kinks (can occur in wavy as well as tightly curly hair) or even build up.
2a-2c, medium texture, porous/ colour treated. Three years CG. Past bra strap length heading for waist.

CO-wash: Inecto coconut/ Elvive Volume Collagen
Treatments: Komaza Care Matani, coconut/ sweet almond/ fractionated coconut oils, Hairveda Sitrinillah
Leave in: Fructis Sleek & Shine (old), Gliss Ultimate Volume, various Elvive
Styler: Umberto Giannini jelly, Au Naturale styling gelee
Flour sack towel, pixie diffuse or air dry.
Experimenting with: benign neglect
For me, I know without a shadow of a doubt that my hair is porous based on the way it reacts with humidity/ super high dews. The absolute worst for me is that salty humid ocean air. My hair loses almost all curl, I get INSANE halo frizz and my hair starts to feel like stale cotton candy. And then I see someone with their curls perfectly intact, if not better with the humidity because of the added moisture. It's so frustrating! Even if I were to put my hair up, I get gnarly stray fly- aways sticking out all over. I now have ways to deal with extremely humid weather (even wore it curly for my wedding in Key West, Fl and it looked nice and held up) but nothing I do can stand up to a misty summer day/night at the beach!! There are other factors to having porous hair of course, but this is my tried and true test

Wetting under the shower, those with low porosity can find water droplets almost roll off their hair whereas others with high porosity find their hair soaks quickly and easily.

You can have more porous damaged ends and less porous virgin roots say, so different parts of your hair might frizz in humidity or wet down/ dry faster than others.

If you find it super confusing consider having a microscope hair analysis: Goosefootprints on Etsy is very well priced, Komaza Care more expensive but also excellent.

Ok thank you, my wash day is Saturday so I'll pay more attention
I'm also consulting my stylist (she's been doing my hair for 2 years) would that be as good as a microscope hair analysis?

BLB - your hair sounds exactly like mine in it's response to humidity! After some insanely hot, dry weather we now have very wet, humid weather and my hair is frizzing in ways I haven't seen in years. Please share your way of dealing with it. Pretty please!
Zippy - my hair gets wet the second I get under the shower and dries quickly too. It also takes colour very readily but then again fades pretty quickly, I think that's a sign of high porosity too. Sorry to hijack your thread with the above question to BLB.

3b in South Australia.
My hair is ALWAYS frizzy.

But in high humidity, it does curl more. I've never had straight hair outside of hotel room (and then no more than an hour) in Florida.

My friends have done the "but you had straight hair when we left the room" chuckle in Florida.

But the frizz...it sticks to me like a plague.

I just washed my hair over an hour ago. I got out the shower at 10:50, that's when I started my timer. Within 20 minute some parts all over my head, the ends mostly, were already dry! my roots are still wet so I'll update when I'm COMPLETELY dry but I'm starting to fear I have high porosity

High porosity is not that bad, in many ways I think it's easier than low. Lots of coconut oil deep treatments and generous use if a true conditioner.

If you think your ends are higher due to damage you might cosier what you are doing that might cause that: too much manipulation, rough detangling, heat styling etc.

Yes I agree low porosity can be more difficult to manage, I'm scared of having porous hair I guess because I've been doing some reading and apparently it means your hair is highly damaged.

I agree that coconut oil treatments definitely help. How often do you guys do a CO treatment? Every week? Twice a week? Twice a month? Do you leave it on overnight? Do you mix it with a conditioner, and if so which one? Thanks high porosity gals!

Some people have naturally porous hair so it will be overly porous root to tip. Others have damaged hair like myself, so the ends and somewhat worse than the roots. I colour treat so damage is inevitable but my hair doesn't look or feel in any way fried and I don't see split ends or white dots. If your hair is porous because it is damaged then the long term solution is to work out why and change that.

I coconut oil overnight to twenty four hours as per the published research on dry hair, then washed out. Conditioner needs to be used on wet hair and that is very likely to massively reduce absorption (oil and water do not mix), I would see that as an intensive conditioning not a deep/ penetrating oiling IYSWIM.

I just coconut oil as and when is convenient depending on my social life and work commitments, or when I think my hair needs 'something'. Sometimes twice a week sometimes not for several weeks. Have been oiling more in winter and protein treating more in summer this last year and a half.
