How do you use Aveda's Elixir?

Seemingly, Aveda discontinued the Styling Curessence. As a result, I thought I would try the Elixir, although I was not too crazy about it when I tried it years ago. It made my hair a bit poofy.

How do any of you curlies, preferable with thick and very curly hair, use it to its maximum potential?
Thick 3B/C hair, shoulder length and transitioning into my premature gray. Wen SAM or Neuma shampoo, Jojoba oil, Aveda Damage Control Spray and Flaxseed-Aloe liquid gel.
The Elixir is rumored to be discontinued as well. I have no confirmation on any of it, but there's a thread discussing it here on nc.com.

That said, I use Elixir as a leave-in conditioner. So I apply 2 quarters [shoulder length hair] to wet hair and distribute it evenly. It goes on before anything else. For me it gives softer, clumpier hair. I have use another product on top of it to enhance curl and provide hold. If you were using it solo before, that may explain why your hair was poofy.

Also, when my hair is dry, I also sometimes will take a dime's worth in my palm and water it down slightly and run my hands over the canopy. This tames frizz.
As far as I could tell when I visited the Aveda website, the Elixir is being discontinued as well.

Thanks for the advice-- I did use a bit of gel on top this morning and my hair looked decent.
