The No Waste Challenge

Like Tree190Likes

Joining. I think what I will be doing (as I have some cone products) is using sulfate free shampoos if I've used a silicone product and just co-wash if I have not. That way I'm getting rid of silicone products, co-washes, and sulfate free shampoos. Personally can not wait to run out of products so I can get more. I think when you have to wait you think through/research your products more thoroughly before commiting Bc we don't want to have a crappy product on our hands forever again!

Are you trying to get rid of some of that or keep it? I'm kind of confused, Lol.
I used up my Malibu shampoo... used that as a hand wash to get rid of it, hated it in my hair.

Or.....perhaps I can use SNTC as moisturizing handwash for the sink in the kitchen....a-ha!

After both suckers are finished, I'm thinking to finish The Body Shop Banana Conditioner while waiting for more Alba Botanica Volumizing Conditioner to arrive.

I also want to compare my 2 staple mousses, finish the one I less prefer and keep and repurchase the one preferred more. This gonna be hard, they both have comparable pros and cons.

I'm planning to slim down my staples to 2 condish and 2 stylers only. *crossing fingers*

The Garnier gel and Not Your Mother's curl cream are the ones I just hope I can chuck into the trash bin. I don't care for them whatsoever. I need so little for my short hair, it'll take an eternity to finish them up.

Out of the 'kill list' of operation "bathroom cleanup", I finished
  • TIGI Bed Head For Men Charge Up Conditioner
  • Suave Naturals Tropical Coconut Conditioner as kitchen sink handwash
  • last bit of Suave Moroan Oil Shampoo my boyf was using (I bought it shortly before going CG)
I'm going to give away Not Your Mother's curl cream to a friend, but prolly keep the Garnier gel around since my boyf uses it between cuts.

Now, I need to use up The Body Shop Banana Conditioner and put in order for more Alba Botanical Volumizing Conditioner, or perhaps revisit Garnier conditioner....

I also need to narrow down my staple mousse. 2 more products to go!

Great challenge, I personally don't have this problem but I think this is a great idea, why waste money and product right. Be sure the product is working well with your hair though. If its not I would go ahead and throw it out or pass it to someone it may work for. No point in damaging your hair just for the sake of using up a product. At least you will know that doesn't work for your hair and not to bother with it again. Remember its all about your hair's health and what works for your hair. Once you find those products there is really not need to keep experimenting with new products. Hope the challenge goes well for everyone!

I think it's wonderful how people are still contributing to this challenge. I haven't posted in quite some time so my list has changed a lot. For a few months I went back to using -cone conditioners. Having experimented with them for a few months I have noticed more breakage and how dry my hair has been so I am back to no cones since that is what my hair clearly prefers. Here is my list.

*P.S- Some of the names aren't going to be fully correct because I am not home and trying to do this by memory

Shampoo:
V05 Extra Body Shampoo
SM Restorative Shampoo (I hate this stuff and told my mom and sis to use it all up!)

Conditioner:
Aussie Moist]
HE HH]
-These are both located at my BF's house for when I was using cones. So I might keep them stored as a back-up in case I need to wash my hair and run out of my Suave cond. So, they won't completely go to waste.
Pantene Curly Line (My new shaving cream! haha)
SM Restorative Cond. (Hate this, told my sis to use it)
Suave Waterfall Mist (No rush to use up)
Suave Coconut (No rush to use up)

Stylers;
Eden Body Works Coconut and Shea Cream (eh it's very heavy so I use it sparingly. Might try it for a dry hair braid out one of these days).
GF Go Clean Gel (awesome gel, in no rush to rid of it)
La Bella gel (This is located at my bf's home so I am in no rush to rid of this as well)
OGX pomegranate and green tea mouse (I still have this stuff. I believe I bought it in Feb of 2014! I like it and used it A LOT in the summer. It's almost done. I can't buy anymore even if I want to because it was at a discounted store initially).
GF Beach/Texturizing Spray (not sure of the exact name but it's this spray that is to promote a 'beach' look. I got it bc it had Magnesium sulfate in it and I hoped it would promote more spiral like curls. Didn't do that. It promoted dryness instead. So now I use it as a hairspray. It doesn't have cones, but If i am going somewhere semi-nice and want my hair to behave, i'll spray a little of this on my hair).

Basically, I have all new products. The OGX product is the only item from my original list. So basically I did not learn from this challenge lmao.

My Goal? Like most, I want 1 Conditioner that co-washes, detangles, and can leave in. After, I want 1-2 stylers. I am trying to be as simple as possible with my hair, especially since my hair is fine.

I had to throw out the rest of my CJ Smoothing Lotion, it started smelling funky. Sad. I loved that stuff and it smelled amazing, but I'm not sure if I'll repurchase, at least not right now. It's a great conditioner for mid dews, but not for low or high due to glycerin. Although it was an excellent product for refreshing. It only had a few uses left, so I'm not too worried about wasted product. I've had it for over a year, so no point in buying if I only refresh with it and it's going to go bad after a while.

I used up my Eden Bodyworks Cowash. I liked it, it was really moisturizing. I'm not sure that I will buy it again, but it was nice while it lasted. I used it mainly to cowash henna out of my hair since it had pretty nice and smooth slip.

I bought Jason Gluten Free conditioner and Neutrogena Anti-Residue shampoo for clarifying. I also got some KC Stellar Strands off the swap. I was doing good.

Just looked at my old list that is something like a year old. Luckily I don't have most of that stuff hanging around anymore, a few products that don't seem rancid but I don't know what to do with them. Especially the Jane Carter Curl Defining Cream is such a keeper (the problem is that even the smallest jar is so huge for me, I only need a tiny bit to do the job and the tub is barely halfway used IN A YEAR). How do you know if the product is bad if it looks and works like it did when it was completely fresh and has no odor etc. ?

Went on a huge iHerb haul during the autumn and I still have a lot of product lying around... Most of them I like and have no problem using them up, only that they clutter my shower like crazy. I think using the shampoos and conditioners is gonna be fairly easy but it will take ages to go through all the styling products. You can really notice that I have been on the search to find the perfect mousse, just to discover that my original staple XZ Tyrni is the best one - of course.

Shampoos
  • Jason Naturals Kelp shampoo
    Given away
  • Earthly Delight Herbal shampoo
    (this stuff is great!)
  • Emma Noel olive oil shampoo
(has ALS, but seems gentle regardless, I use it for clarifying and don't really want to get rid of it...)
  • FLOW kosmetiikka hemp shampoo bar
(Local brand, just bought this. Surprisingly gentle for true soap-based shampoo, I use it for my face and body also)
Conditioners
  • Jason Naturals Kelp conditioner
    Given away
  • Earthly Delight Herbal conditioner
(this is amazing! great ingredients, fragrance from essential oils and phenomenal slip)
  • Tresemme Naturals conditioner
Threw this away, it was already so old that it probably wasn't even safe to use anymore
  • Stoneybrook fragrance free conditioner
  • Avalon Organics lavender conditioner
(this is so weird, it just sinks in the hair, provides no slip but the result is fairly decent)
Styling
  • Jane Carter Curl Defining Cream
  • Andalou Naturals BB styling cream
(doesn't seem to do much, hard to tell if the amount is right, too little does nothing and too much makes hair greasy)
  • Aussie Aussome Volume mousse
(horrible, mostly just makes my hair limp, flat and smells sickly sweet, I feel like tossing it)
  • Kinky Curly Curling Custard
(my fave, just a little bit left, gonna buy more when this runs out)
  • Alba Botanica strong hold styling gel
  • Shikai Colour Reflect unscented mousse
(I like it this far, unscented is a huge plus)
  • Bed Head Foxy Curls mousse
(horrible skickly sweet smell, otherwise ok)
  • XZ Tyrni mousse
(my favourite mousse, no polyquats or silicones and smells lovely)
  • Aubrey Organics Herbal Missst super strong hair spray
(Wow, with this super strong actually means... super strong. Because of that it's really hard to use the right amount)
  • Giovanni L.A. Hold hair spray
  • Herbina salt texture spray
Oils etc
Only listed oils that are meant just for hair. Naturally I have many plain oils that I use for the face and body also, so I'm not listing them here.
  • Schwarzkopf 6 Miracles Oil Essence (contains cones and all that along with the oil, dunno how I'm gonna get through this, the bottle is huge compared to the small amount you actually need per application)

In total 21 products! My ultimate goal is somewhere around 5 (shampoo, condish, curl cream, gel and mousse).
2A fine wavy hair. Hates silicones, polyquats and too much oil, loves protein and glycerine.
