The No Waste Challenge

Hey all!

Today as I was looking at my baskets of hair products, I decided to challenge myself and slow down the product junkie inside of me. I see all the hair products I have and don't use half of them. Yet, I get sick of what I do have, and then go buy more which then turns into this cycle of wasted products.

I am sure this has been done before, but I challenge all you guys to gather all the products you have and use them. Don't buy anymore until everything you have is gone. Personally, I feel I waste so much and I want to start taking what I have, appreciating it, and using it. I think we should all post here: What you ended up using, how you used it, and your thoughts on whether you liked your hair with the products or not. I think this can help people get creative with what they have and help save some money. Plus, the reward is once the products are all gone, you can get more! HAHA!

Samanthascurlz 03-09-2014 11:26 AM

Today, I co-washed with my kiwi lime squeeze (V05) and then I detangled with my Aussie moist & kiwi lime. Both of them had pumps so it was awesome! I then rinsed all the conditioner out. After, I added literally 1 pump of the aussie moist and 1 pump of the kiwi lime. I am trying to see if the least amount of product will assist with my fine hair not being weighed down (that has been a frequent problem).

Afterwards, I did the sunkissalba finger coiling technique. I used my Organix mousse and coiled. I then used a little jojoba oil on my ends.

Also, last night, I did a Coconut oil treatment.

My hair is drying now, I slightly diffused.

I will try to do this! Been using my Shea Moisture baby shampoos as body/hand washes to get rid of them... they are almost gone.

I used my YTCucs shampoo today, because I had silicone in my hair. I just bought Eden Cowash so I used that after the shampoo just to try it out. I used KCKT as leave in, SM Smoothie over that, and then KCCC and diffused to about 60%. I'm finding this with new cut, diffusing to less than 80% is a lot better for my curls so they don't spring up as tight on the topmost layers.

Thats an excellent idea with using the shampoos as body and hand washes! Love it! This is great, thank you so much for sharing. I find that your experience with how much to diffuse will be very helpful for others. I can't diffuse 100% either.

Even though I like it I'm going to use up my HETT gel BEFORE I try out Miss Jessie's Jelly Soft Curls...I'm down to one bottle of shampoo and conditioner that I'm using now. I have about 4 bottles of VO5 that will have to wait till summer. I have a feeling I'll be able to cowash in higher dews.

Samanthascurlz 03-09-2014 01:36 PM

Yes definitely do whatever order you need. I mean if you don't have any more conditioner than of course buy more. Its more so to use what you have and to not buy what you don't need. Can't wait to hear more about your products :)

I really should partake in this! I have too many shampoos & conditioners sitting around that I'm not using when I really should just get rid of them (without wasting them). In fact, I placed a big order with CurlMart last week even though I hadn't run out of stuff yet.

Here's a little list of stuff I need to finish before buying anything else (includes stuff that I ordered from CM):

Shampoos
Desert Essense Tea Tree Shampoo
Alba Botanicals Cocoa Butter Shampoo*
Kinky-Curly Come Clean* (too harsh, will probably use this as a bodywash - I love that suggestion, ha!)

Conditioners
Curl Junkie Beauticurls Strengthening Conditioner
Oyin Handmade Honey Hemp Conditioner
Alba Botanicals Cocoa Butter Conditioner*
Milk + Honey Tangle free Pudding

Protein Treatment
Curl Junkie Repair Me!

Oils / Sealers
Delon Coconut Oil*
Delon Argan Oil*
AO Jojoba Oil
HPO Happy Scalp
Sunny Isle Jamaican Extra Virgin Coconut Oil

Stylers
Mop Top Curly Custard
Milk + Honey Hair Custard* (which was way too heavy for my hair.. I should probably figure some kind of other usage for it, maybe it could serve as a pre-poo?)
KCCC
KCSS

I'm thinking about bringing some things (marked with a *) over to a friend of mine, to see if she has any use for it, because they were either too harsh, or too heavy for my hair or ended up containing cones, like the Delon oils.

Samanthascurlz 03-09-2014 02:16 PM

I really like that idea too. If there's some stuff that you just know won't work with your hair then giving to a friend is a great idea! It takes it off your hands without it being a total waste. Sometimes if I don't like something I will give to my sister and shell end up loving it. Its a great way to pass it on. Awesome!!

I'm gonna join.... I'll add my extensive list later. Lately I've been shaving with the horrible Mane n Tail conditioner. On days I'm about to wash I'll use products I don't care about since I know they'll be washed out in a couple of hours.

I resisted the temptation to buy a CJ conditioner tonight. Arrgghghghh.. Ok, maybe when half my stash is gone :D

I used up a product tonight! - Shea Moisture Red Bush & Babassu Baby Wash - I use this and the Chamomile & Argan Oil one for hand soap. Not my first choice, but I want rid of it. I will not repurchase these, they are very harsh on the skin and didn't do anything for my hair.

Wow... it sure doesn't look like a lot until I type up a list.... ouch... I feel like I've just admitted I'm an alcoholic...

MeeBee 03-09-2014 09:12 PM

Wow I thought I had a lot of products! lol

This is a very timely post and I'm definitely! I was in Target last night in need of a low poo and resisted the temptation to buy anything because I have a JC low poo on the way (it's just sitting in North Hosuton waiting to be sent out to me! Come on Monday!)I've been using KCCC but it's a sulfate shampoo and even though I love it, I'm worried I'm damaging my hair using it for every wash. I have a bottle of Mop Top shampoo that I don't like but in my haste used it last night. I had to emulsify it A LOT to make it work, so I was putting basically nothing but bubbles in my hair. This could work for me, occasionally. And I have to use so much that there's hope I will finish the bottle.

Using up my Shea Moistuere may be a challenge for me haha. It was the first CG conditioner I bought. My husband, bless him, thinking he was being nice, saw the conditioner in the shower and bought TWO more bottles of SM conditioner. So now I have three bottles of pretty much never used conditioner that hates my hair. I can't stand to see them go to waste so I've been thinking of using them as a pre poo on sulfate days. What do you guys think?

Shampoo: JC Gentle Lather Shampoo
Mop Top Gentle Shampoo
KCCC - already on second bottle of this so I may have to buy
More since it's objective is different than the low poos.
Carol's Daughter Rosemary Mint Clarifying Shampoo

Conditioner: Mop Top Daily Conditioner (love)
SM Coconut and Hibiscus Conditioner
2 SM Shea Butter Restorative Conditioners

Leave In: KCKT (holy grail)

Deep Treatment: Macadamia Deep Repair Masque

Stylers: AG Beach Bomb
AG re:coil
Mop Top Light Hold (sample size)
KC Curly Custard
KC Spiral Spritz
LA Looks Sports Gel
SM Hold and Shine Spray

The SM spray, I have to say, I find unusable. May have to gift that one. It leaves a weird coating and dries out my hair. Yuck.

And that's it! Game on!

Whisperes 03-09-2014 09:32 PM

That is a pretty big list sixelamy! Good luck finishing that! :o
I'd been looking at the Yes to blackberries conditioner myself, I'd be tempted to ask you how you like it, but since this is a no waste challenge, I better restrain myself. :p

I was able to give a bunch of stuff to my friend with "easy-peasy" (as she calls it) straight & color treated hair so that helps with making my list smaller- and allowing myself to buy something new sooner, heh. Or is that besides the point? :D

I gave away:
Alba Botanicals Cocoa Butter Shampoo
Alba Botanicals Cocoa Butter Conditioner
Delon Coconut Oil
Delon Argan Oil
Milk + Honey Hair Custard
and a bottle of Alba Botanicals Cocoa Butter Body Lotion as well as a bunch of nail polish I don't wear.

Use it as a pre-poo or you can also use it for shaving, or possibly even a light body lotion.

Lol... thanks, I need it! I think you mean Yes to Blueberries? I absolutely love it, it's one of my favorites. But don't let that tempt you ;)

Excellent! You can do this. Also think about different ways to use these products too. With the shea moisture products, sometimes I use certain ones as stylers. For instance, I have the SM curl and style conditioner and I used it as a styler rather than a conditioner. BTW, gorgeous hair!

I have always liked that idea of using conditioner as shaving cream. I always need to be reminded so thank you!

I definitely understand if you just can't use a product. I believe giving to someone is the best alternative. That was a very sweet gesture of your husband! It seems that the SM products are on a theme on here of wanting to get rid of! haha. That must tell us something...
