How to get rid of matting at the crown area?

When I rinse/wash my hair, the hair locks at the crown of my head still are prone to tangling when wet/soaked. The tangling happens even at the roots!
In general, the halo locks have barely curl definition and I feel bumps when I slide my fingers down the shaft from root to ends. I need a lot of conditioner (Yes To Carrots a great slip!) to detangle that part of my hair.

Is it because I wear buns/ponytails at that height, or by something else?
And how can I reduce the tangling at the halo zone?

Is this happening when you hair is wet? I was just getting on here to post a similar thread. I cannot get the knots out of my hair. I'll comb them all out then it all knots back up again.

Could be kinking and/ or different coarseness and/ or damage (likely on canopy but not so much at the roots).

Are you letting the troublesome section get sun damaged or beaten down on by a power shower?
2a-2c, medium texture, porous/ colour treated. Three years CG. Past bra strap length heading for waist.

CO-wash: Inecto coconut/ Elvive Volume Collagen
Treatments: Komaza Care Matani, coconut/ sweet almond/ fractionated coconut oils, Hairveda Sitrinillah
Leave in: Fructis Sleek & Shine (old), Gliss Ultimate Volume, various Elvive
Styler: Umberto Giannini jelly, Au Naturale styling gelee
Flour sack towel, pixie diffuse or air dry.
Experimenting with: benign neglect
It also happens when it's dry.

about the damage: obviously, a big part is damaged by past heat. But it's also less than a year ago I covered my pillow with a satin-silk scarf, so I assume that there is also past mechanical damage.
I'm not sure whether my overall texture is medium or thick, but I think the halo part is coarse.

I would like to trim the halo section seperately because it's not as long as the rest of my hair, but I cannot find a tutorial yet with detailed explanation of how to separate the halo section for layering. (for the rest I don't have layers)
Does anybody have suggestions?

@ Firefox: what do you mean with "power shower"? hot temperatures?

Power shower = fast/ hard flow or higher pressure, that can damage or tangle hair. Also long regular showers might do the same. Hard water can make hair dry and brittle over time: solution is to use a chelating shampoo.

You should ideally be working with your hair properties (porosity, elasticity, coarseness) when choosing products/ ingredients, if you aren't confident what they are consider a microscope hair analysis.

You can send hair from your crown in a separate baggie if you wish. Services are available from Komaza Care and Goosefootprints on Etsy.

Thank you for your explanation. I wasn't aware about the showering. from now on I make sure I shower more gently. What temperature range (in Celsius) do you suggest?

Recently, I do ACV rinses (did only 2 times atm). I diluted 3 tsp ACV in 200 mL of filtrated water. At this moment I will do the rinses 1 - 2 times a month.

Is it also possible to send hair analytes from the Netherlands? If so, how long does it take to send and recieve?

You can send your hair sample from the Netherlands, I have no idea how fast or slow your mailing system is because I am in the UK.

Not aware of any need for a specific water temperature, its more general water exposure that can be damaging AFAIK. There is a mini experiment on the Sciencey Hairblog that you might find useful.

Dilute vinegar rinses may help reduce build up of minerals but may well not be sufficient to shift existing build up (chelate).

I am prone too tangling in my crown too. For some reason it's just THICK right there. My little sister is the same way.

My hairdresser said its not uncommon for curly hair to do that. So I use extra conditioner and finger detangle really slowly and work through small sections to avoid breakage. I also use extra product there when I do finger coils!

Thank you for the answers.

Can you still do pineappling successfully overnight?
Because I need to braid my hair into 6 - 7 sections to prevent tangling (despite having a satin silk covered pillow).

I have no issues with pineapple. I have layers so I clip the back section so it can't tangle up. Usually those spots need a little extra water in the morning when I shake it out. It's trial and error really.. It gets a lot easier and you train your hair

*bump*
Nowadays, I have less trouble with tangles and mats during the washing. I section my hair into braids and detangle each braid separately, but I also can wash my hair just loose again .
Furthermore, I use coconut oil als pre-wash treatment and dry-detangle my hair prior to washing.
