Weird underlayer?

I have been having trouble with my very bottom layer of hair. The rest of my hair curls/waves really nicely most of the time, but that underlayer, and sometimes even the tips of my hair in general, will curl in a weird shape. It also doesn't clump at all.

May that be the sign of me using too much product on a layer that needs much less, being an underlayer it might be less porous than all the rest of my head?

The products I use are really just a few. A low-poo/poo sometimes now because of hard water (both are CG, I am completely 100% sure. The only thing the low poo has is glycerin but it's a bit down the list, like second half), as a rinse-out Garnier Fructis Pure Clean conditioner, and as a LI Gliss Ultimate volume Conditioner. Then argan/coconut oil, and flaxseed gel. Mine has magnesium sulphate and grapeseed oil in it. Some panthenol, if I remember correctly, too. XD I made it a while ago, with preservatives it's lasting forever.

I trimmed my hair like a month, maybe a month and a half ago so I don't think it's me needing a trim. Hair is higher porosity on my ends, surely, but I think I got rid of most of the damage by now, it's been fourteen months since my last bleaching now and I'm shoulder length! I used to straighten until last October, but yeah...

Last thing! My hair adores protein. I gelatin PT whenever I have time and I think that I could definitely do it more often, like once a week. Might that help with the wonkiness?

Thanks in advance for the help.
A 2C, wishfully thinking of being 3a. Sometimes I get there. CG since October 2013, Eurocurly (just for a few months more!), last time bleaching February 2013, demi-permanent dyed to cover, then only henna. Heat-free since January 2014! Hair's mostly healthy, except the last ends. SBL, but I want elbow length so badly!

Sometimes it's just curl pattern. My hair is curliest in the canopy, and least curly in the understory. It's a bit of a PITA because that area is 3a, so needs more length to curl, but is also the shortest because of being at the perimeter of my scalp. Having a proper curly cut is what helps the most IME.

I agree with you on that. My left side tends to curl less, for example... but my underlayer started misbehaving recently, it wasn't always, so I'm just puzzled.

Do you think a curly cut would work on a wavy? I'm a 2c, I'm afraid I'd end up with an uneven look, which I'd hate.

Deva cuts have made all the difference for me. My hair consistently looks like it all belongs on the same head

@HtBlack is your underlayer longer? that's what my issue is. it's not as curly as the rest of my hair because of this.
🐾
Hmm, just slightly. But it's not loss of curl, it's unclumpy, wonky curls. Like I slept on them, just right after washing. XD

@morgan I'll look into curly hairdressers in Italy. I bet it's gonna be a hunt.

I've struggled with my underlayer as well. It is getting better and better but the progress is way slower than with the rest of my hair and I'm now 6 month + into CG. What I've realised is that the underlayer is not less porous but actually is more damaged than the rest + also finer. As this is an area that tends to get tangled, at least at the nape, I wouldn't be surprised if your hair there could be more porous as well. Do you feel you can apply less or more leave-in there? Also, rubbing against your body/clothes/pillow might also make it wonky?
CG since 8th of September 2013 - learning in progress!

I have this same problem. Mine is just the fact that my pattern starts at a certain length, and my underlayer has not reached a length to finish a pattern. Do you think this may be the cause for you? You could try treating the bottom layer with protein and not the top, if you feel it is another issue.
2c-3a - coarse - normal-high porosity - high density - growing out to donate

NP/LP: KMF Whenever Cond./ Giovanni TTTT

Jimipe, I'm sure sleeping plays a factor! But my underlater was very wonky even right after styling clean hair. :/
The porosity thing... aaah, I don't know! :c I think that for me it's the contrary. My underlayer seems to like less product than my canopy...

Sixelamy, I actually had a revelation yesterday. I tried doing an additional protein treatment and it seems like after months I finally reached over-proteining! I didn't think I'd ever get to that, my hair adores protein. But I had a hunch it could be that, for some reason... all my products are rich in protein and less in conditioning agents.

So I did a DT with an aloe vera+fatty alcohols hair mask... and the wonkiness is almost gone, my curls are bouncing up too! I think the rest of it is caused by the same issue you have. But I'll keep away from protein for a few washes and we'll see if it gets better. I'm really curious. (:

Have you considered doing the self cut as described, illustrated, and demonstrated in Curly Girl: The Handbook? I've found it better than traditional, wet cuts, and better than the least skilled Deva cut I've had.

I never have, honestly. Do you think it would work with me being a 2c? I just feel like every cut that isn't the traditional wet one makes my head uneven in the end. :/

I think it's worth trying. You'll never know unless you try.

I started out with just trimming my bangs. Since that had worked well, I was psyched to do the full trim and shaping when the current edition of the book came out. I would say that it wasn't difficult. I just had to take my time. And I'm not coordinated, so working with two mirrors took some getting used to.

That's true also. The next time I need a trim I will! I trimmed my hair a lot these last few months and now that it looks healthy I just want it to grow out a little. (':
