Can Curl Type Change???

Like Tree12Likes

Could my hair type have changed? (should point out I am 41, so could also have perimenopause??).

Back when I first joined and began doing a curl friendly method, I was typed as most likely 3A - this was my hair right before starting curly girl/modified CG:

My hair remained the same type of curl for a long time, but more recently, I noticed now my hair curls like this now:

Leigh
3a mixed with 2C???
Coarse-Medium Texture
Normal to low Porosity
Low Elasticity

As I Am Cleasning Pudding
As I Am Leave in Conditioner
Aquage Molding Mega Gel

Currently working for summer dews in GA and FL:
As I Am leave in + Target Curls Cream Brle applied and styled soaking wet.
Second day: Cream Brle with touch of water.

It could.

My own experience, however, is that my hair responds to differences in dew points, changes in water, and product changes.
Peace,
Morgan

Baby Fine 3B, low porosity, normal density and elasticity
CGing since July 2008
Thanks, Morgan.

Same here. In higher dew points I'm more prone to frizz so it's harder to get curl definition. In lower dew points, my curls pop more. Products with aloe Vera don't make my curls pop but it makes my hair so soft. Hope this helps. It could be the dew points and products you use. Try switching them up.

My curl pattern has changed a lot. (I'm 44). It used to curl more readily and hold curl better. I think it's due to age and I'm on several medications.

Yes, your hair does look noticeably different in your last pictures than in the first one. As we age, changes in our hair are apt to happen. So hormonal changes could possibly be a factor. Or, another possible reason could be do to the use of dye in your hair. As such chemicals might surely be the culprit.

Also, I would have never guessed that you are 41. As, I think you look very youthful and pretty.

Wow I didn't know hormonal changes can affect your hair. Learn something new.

I also noticed that your hair appears a lot longer in the first picture, and that could have something to do with the difference in curls. My hair is 3A, and it is curlier when it's longer.
And I have noticed that my hair is different since getting past 40 (I'll be 43 in August) and having my son (he's 3.5). Hormones definitely play a role!

Maybe it is a combination of things then. Aging, meds, length, color, etc.

Loveliam, while I'm sure hormones, age, medications, etc, and combination thereof, could very well be contributing, I can't help but wonder if you don't already know a partial answer to the problem at hand. I noticed in your signature that you said, "Probably need protein!" Have you tried a protein treatment???

I tend to agree with CurlyDiva71 more than anything, some types of hair curl more as they get longer. Also, if you're taking HRT it shouldn't affect the curl, not taking any might. I didn't notice a significant change in your curls in the front but the back looks like it needs a bit more layering, somehow the curls are not aligning together properly.

And the advice about protein might be spot on. Something simple you could try is a PT that uses unflavored gelatin, here's how you can make it: Science-y Hair Blog: Gelatin Protein Treatment Recipe Update

I posted this in the "pics of your curls" thread but it belongs here too:

I am absolutely convinced that age and hormones -- as well as your thyroid -- can change your hair.

I had straight hair as a kid. Permed it starting in the late 80's and kept on perming until about 18 months ago (hair began to thin out and shed badly) so I stopped cold. Went back to straight and straightened & blowdried it until the perm grew out.

Kept straightening and blowdrying...until one day last week when I was in a rush and let it air dry. I couldn't believe it when I looked in the mirror. I HAD WAVES!

I immediately went back CG!

It's not much I realize but it's more than I've EVER had naturally. I don't know what Curly Hair Gods I appeased - or if it's my thyroid or some weird menopausal stuff (I'm 47)...but I am NOT complaining. I've been floating through my days in hair bliss!
Could my hair type have changed? (should point out I am 41, so could also have perimenopause??).

I'm definitely a "curly" 2c. Sometimes curly and sometimes just wavy upper layer with a ringlety under layer. My hair has been thick and coarse since birth. Strawberry blonde in color that can and does change depending on the type and amount of light.

All in all, I'm happy with my hair type but almost for sure think yours is prettier.

I thought about those highlights too...
There are high lights in it now. So, maybe that did add to the change in curl.

Wow, locogirlp!!!! That is amazing.

I did some reading on PT here on the boards. While at the store, I picked up two sample size packets - one of ORS hair mayo and one of Palmer's Olive Oil PT - to try out.

It definitely can! My hair has changed so much over even just the past year or so with proper care.

Either way, your hair is/was gorgeous!
