Alright so since the last year I would get these huge knots, just hair matted together in this 1 big ball of knots. Mainly on my crown but I get them pretty much everywhere now. I don't get what triggers this? I literally woke up this morning and felt this huge ball on my hair, I put some leave in into it so that it can loosen up but damn I just can't get a comb through it. Now I have to rip it apart so that i can detangle it section per section.

Any tips or why this keeps on happening with my hair?
How do you protect your hair at night? That can help reduce tangles- either sleeping with a scarf/bonnet on, or sleeping on a satin/silk pillowcase. it can also be braiding or tying your hair up in some way so that it can't wrap around itself.

Other things that I've noticed help me are making sure I'm getting trims often enough (I may not show split ends at these times- I get tangles long before I have those nasty ends.)

If it's not trims that help me, I've noticed that I haven't had as many problems with tangling with: a) better moisture retention and b) regular protein treatments for my hair which also consequently helped with my moisture problems. Not everyone will have this combination- for my hair protein application like that works as an emollient AND humectant from what I'm understanding from literature for instance. I also worked out my properties and started choosing ingredients to work with my porosity- so for me this ended up using oil (emollient) sparingly in my styling routine or only as a not so major part of a formulated product.
3C/4A, fine texture, low-medium density, and low porosity?
CG since November 2013.

Pre-Poo: Coconut Oil overnight, or a greek yogurt mixture
Shampoo: Curls Cleanser and/or clarifier
Conditioner: trying out different Suave Naturals conditioners and GVP's leave-in conditioner at the moment
Styler: iagirl's super smooth flax curl cream. <3
PT: iagirl's gelatin treatment 3-4 times a month
DT: conditioner or yogurt base with honey and oil if the conditioner has none.
Thank you! I think that with me it's a moisturizing problem or maybe using the wrong products causing the matting?

Super happy that I got all the knots out though, the hair was sticking together like glue it was crazy. Slapped some Cantu Shea butter on there so I hope that will help out a bit!
Yes! Make the word "moisture" your mantra!

Here's some ideas: 1) prepare a refreshing spray using a little of your best CO + a few drops of a good oil mixed with distilled water and use it at least once throughout the day and 2) before going to bed and covering it with a satin bonnet, 3) repeat when you get up. 4) Do weekly DTs for a month, alternating between a PT and a moisturizing one, then do them 2x/month. 5) If your hair likes glycerin use a curl activator gel if available where you live, these are clear gels whose main ingredient is glycerin, they usually contain aloe vera too, some include protein as well. If not available, get some glycerin and add a little bit to your LI, or make a separate spray of equal parts of glycerin and distilled water to use to refresh your curls.

I get really bad knots at the back of my head, and nothing seems to help them. If I braid my hair every night (two braids) it helps, but I don't like changing my curl pattern like that. So I usually stick to my satin sleep cap or a bun at night (which still helps). I also love my tangle teazer brush! <3 And afterwards I take a fine-tooth (ish) comb and go over the sections to really get rid of the knots. Good luck!

Hair that tangles easily has the cuticle "frayed", either due to damage, friction, or because it's seeking moisture, so every attempt should be made to help it re-close and stay closed. It often helps to smooth a bit of LI cream (with oils) on the "tangly" parts. Because my fine colored hair would tangle easily too I use my curl refresher or at least distilled water to spritz my hair before going to bed.

There is this on spot in my hair (underlayer at the nape) that gets matted frequently. From what I gather, fine hair is more likely to matt like that.

For me me it's usually if my hair is overconditoned/needs protein when it starts to tangle more. For the most part I don't really tangle though, except for that one part that likes to matt.

I second trying to braid at night and any silk pillowcase/sleeping cap ideas.

fine - normal porosity*?- medium density - normal elasticity. Hard water. SoCal.
*Used to be low-porosity, but I lightened my hair 1-2 shades, so I may be normal-porosity now.

Yep, the nape is very prone to tangling, maybe it's because there are shorter hairs there mixed with the longer ones.

I always have some tangles but my hair is not really bad to knot. When trying new products recently I kept waking up with the most awful, matted, hair. All the strands were sticking to each other. I was in desperate need of a trim, protein, and was having reactions to specific humectants in high dew points.

When I hear terms like "hipster" I think, who told cliques they could leave high school??

When my hair knots, I know I've either gone too long without deep conditioning or need a trim. Or I've waited to long between washes then my hair gets matted.

When Fifi.G mentioned products I was reminded of something related: buildup. Curlicious13 brought up other good points. Yes, quite a few reasons why it can happen so we have to look for any other "symptoms" to determine the actual cause.
