Hi all,

There is a woman who makes gorgeous silk/satin bags with concealed drawstrings, and fine attention to detail. It occurred to me that these very characteristics are the very skills needed to make a great silk sleep cap. So I wrote to her and she said she'd be happy to do it. And it would cost less than other places that sell pre made silk ones!

I can choose everything…. the fabric I want, elastic/drawstring hybrid or other method of closure, the thickness of the material, whether it's a single layer or double layer of cloth. Currently I have a cheapie satin sleep cap and it's become clear to me that a silk sleep cap would give me true 2nd day hair.

She's going to make me a prototype and then we'll do a final one. So, especially for those of you who own silk sleep caps, what would you recommend? If you could customize everything to you, what would you choose? How thick should the silk be, and should it be single or double layered? Any advice? TIA, and I'll let you all know how it turns out.
Is the woman you are using local to you? Or, does she have an online store?

I am awaiting the arrival of my first silk cap (in my quest to regain definition of curls) so I do not have any advice.

She isn't local to me. She does have a page with samples of her work (the bags she makes that is… when she's done with my cap I assume she'll have pics of that too). I could PM her info if you want. That's exciting you're getting your first silk sleep cap. I'm curious to know what you think. Everyone seems to really love them and get 2nd day hair. So I'm excited to get mine!

I promise I'm not stalking you, you just have a lot of posts that interest me Does she have a website? I'm considering eventually getting a silk sleep cap since right now I'm using pillow cases, they usually end up falling off while I'm sleeping.

I PM'd you. So after I get my cap, assuming I have permission I can post a pic of it here. Is elastic/drawstring hybrid the way to go, do y'all think?

Anyway this is exciting. I feel ridiculously spoiled. Hopefully my hair will begin to look that way.

Yes, could you pm me her name/site?

Only because it was actually hard to fins a cap that was primarily silk vs. non-silk types of satin.

Also, do any of you lovely ladies who have silk sleep caps know the approximate width of the silk? I imagine it needs to be thick enough to hold up in the wash and protect the hair, yet thin enough to let the air circulate. Are they single or double sided? Any info appreciated!

I know you already have someone to make you one, but for anyone else looking for a sleep cap, Silky Cocoon on etsy makes wonderful, long sleep caps. They are great because they don't squish my curls.

Silly question, but how do these caps work, do you have to tie your hair or can you just put it on making sure all the hair is in even if not tied?

I can't pineapple, so I just put my hair in it. THere seem to be two styles, a longer one where your hair stays in its natural shape, and a shorter one which is like a plop.
