Default Boston hair.

I just noticed a number of posts from the Boston area. i'm in sw New Hampshire and often get my hair cut in Boston - but i'm still looking for the 'right' haircutter.
would any of you Boston folks be willing to talk about where you've been and who does your hair now?
btw, my hair is 3b, thick and long (and a mess right now).
thanks!

I went once for a "deva cut" at cala renee salon in beverly, MA. She did a really nice job! was trained by lorraine massey (curly girl book, devacurl products). she taught me some uesful curly things and used all deva products. you might want to check her out! she has curly hair too. plus you can buy the devacurl and devacare line there.

Why did you only go once - or did you just start seeing her?

I have also gone to Cala Renee in Beverly, a couple of times, and won't go anywhere else now. I tried Dana at M Salon, due to his scads of good reviews here, but had a mediocre experience. Cala has done the Devachan training in NYC and the "Deva cut" here will run you half of what it does there - and is totally quality. Also she is super nice and listens to what you want. Definitely worth the half hour drive (Zipcar if you don't have a car).

thanks. i may try cala renee since i'm currently scheduled to go to Devachan during a trip to ny in april. i'd rather see someone who i can easily go back to (and who is cheaper as well).
by any chance, do you know if she can cut hair to be worn both curly and straight?
i'm beginning to wonder if dana is better with short hair than with long. mine is long. while i loved the way it looked straight when he cut it, i wasn't crazy about it curly. does that make any sense to you?

I dunno, women with long hair seem to love Dana too. The complex match of hairdresser + client just failed me with him.

If you already have a Devachan appt, will be in NYC and have the money right now, and if you have never been, definitely give them a whirl. There is nothing like that first Devachan haircut. Otherwise, though, Cala is awesome and will totally listen to your needs. Her own hair is incredibly curly and big and wonderful, but I am sure she will understand the necessity of layering that looks good straight or curly. She's cut all kinds of hair for years.

For the record, my own Deva cuts, whether in NYC or with Cala, look fine when my hair ends up straight.

Thanks!

i'm considering having my curl slightly relaxed, so i'm thinking that i'll call both places and see what they do for that. have you ever done that?

I also have gone to Calla Renee in Beverly and love her.
(And she's reasonably priced too)
I don't go to her all the time because I have to take time off from work to go there. It's kind of a hike for me.

Sorry Max - when I stay local my regular hairdresser (who works out of her home) does slight trims for me and my colors. When I need the big chop I go to Cala Renee. You get a real Deva cut from Cala.

Although I have heard that M in Cambridge is good, but I don't know any details.

There is a Ouidad in Chelmsford but that's a hike too. I made an appointment once, but some of the reviews scared me off so I cancelled.

Now that I think of it my coworker's sisters, who both have corkscrew curls, swear by the Carriage House in Cambridge. They do Ouidad cuts which are a mixed bag, but it seems to work better for corkscrews than for waves. I've never relaxed anything, I'm a 2c/3a. A really good cut though may reduce your desire to relax the curl as it'll be way more manageable.

Mom goes to Cala Renee all the time. She loves her. I get my hair cut at Devachan (I live in NYC), but my mom's cut is definitely Deva quality.

Funny side note: My mom has a very thick Boston accent, so for the longest time I was convinced that Cala Renee's name was actually Carla, and my mom was just butchering it with her accent.

Well... i'm pretty sure i'll do a deva cut - and am now deciding whether i'll do it in ny - where i'll be in a couple of weeks - or up here with cala. cala is definitely sounding good.

as an aside, i just wanted to mention that i saw someone the other day who has thick 3b hair that used to be long, but is now shoulder length. it looked great - and she said she went to Maria's Salon in Chelmsford, MA and had a Ouidad cut by Bobbie Veiga. i've seen some pretty scary comments about that place here, so wanted to mention this good review.

thanks everyone for your thoughts.
