Sometimes I switch things up, but for the most part, I apply all my products right in the shower when my hair is still dripping. Some water is squeezed out as I scrunch my leave in through, but it's still pretty damp when I'm applying my gel. For me, having fairly wet hair helps control the frizz and gives me better clumps. When all my product is in, then I scrunch with a microfiber and usually plop for anywhere between 20 minutes to 2 hours. I don't get a strong gel cast, but my hurls definitely benefit from a light SOTC when my hair is 90% dry.

In my experience, the more water than is left in my hair, the softer my curls will be. When I use a towel to take some of the water out, and then put gel in after, i do get that harder gel cast. You could definitely try more gel when you try that method again and see if that works. I'm always surprised at how much gel my hair can handle, when it's really wet, without it looking like cartoon hair.

Low-Poo (once a week, or so): SheaMoisture African Black Soap Deep Cleansing Shampoo
Co-Wash: As I Am Coconut Co-Wash. Suave Naturals Tropical Coconut Conditioner.
RO: Shea Moisture Raw Shea Butter Restorative Conditioner.
LI: As I Am Leave In.
Styler: Eco Styler Moroccan Argan Oil Styling Gel.
I apply my leave in and gel in the shower, then scrunch with a microfiber towel, then diffuse. Plopping doesn't work for me. At first I thought all the gel would come out on the towel while I was scrunching, but I still get a nice gel cast as the hair dries.

Lately most of the times I just squeeze the excess water out but do not use the towel, but I tended to get too much crunch plus I was not getting enough clumping by using a towel first. But that has not always been the case, I used to apply gel on "towel-dried" hair all the time and just added a bit of water back to the sections that got stringy. For me it all depends on the condition of my hair at the time, when it's shorter and healthier it clumps easier without all the water.
I don't plop or scrunch my hair with towels anymore - I like the results better if my hair is sopping wet when I apply my products, so that's why I don't do it before. And I feel like the towels absorb all my products, which is why I don't do it after.

Occasionally I'll squeeze out a bit of excess moisture with my hands before I add my products (gently and not twisting / wringing, just lightly squeezing).

But yeah, I basically just rake through my leave-in on my wet hair, scrunch, rake through my gel, smooth it to promote more clumps, then scrunch that too. Then leave to dry!

No towels / t-shirts or any of that business for me.

I apply my leave in and gel to soaking wet hair. I rake, shake and scrunch my leave in and gel in my hair. I get a fabulous gel cast.
I've never done any of that. Maybe it's time to switch things up?

I co wash and rinse very, very well and I do put my hair up in a towel for about 5 minutes. After that, I apply some Suave "leave in cream" and put it all back into a scrunchie while I am applying my makeup. After my makeup is applied, I re-wet it using Infusium 23. I then apply any and all "products" into it: Biosilk silk therapy and Aveda Be Curly curl enhancer usually. If I am going to use gel, I then scrunch in the gel after this and let my hair air dry. This may not be the best way to appy products; I don't know.

P.S. The forum hasn't been letting me post lately. Says "cannot verify ip" but I'm using the same IP I always have. Anybody know how to fix that? I can only come here through my phone now, not my computer.

I'm definitely a "curly" 2c. Sometimes curly and sometimes just wavy upper layer with a ringlety under layer. My hair has been thick and coarse since birth. Strawberry blonde in color that can and does change depending on the type and amount of light.

All in all, I'm happy with my hair type but almost for sure think yours is prettier.

And just to stay on topic, if I use a towel to soak up some water, I do it before I apply any product. If I use a towel afterwards it seems to take away too much product and I end up having to apply more.
CurlyDiva71 and AngelaE8654 like this.
Very fine, high porosity, currently dyed and growing out the relaxed portions. I'm pretty sure my hair's 3b something IIRC. We will be finding out for sure as time goes by.

It's official: My hair just loves Shea Moisture. I use a mixture of products from the Raw Shea Butter, African Black Soap, and Coconut & Hibiscus lines.

I saw your trying to grow out your dye......so am I! Haven't dyed mine since January......kinda scarey because I have no idea what color is under there. So far my top is gray but my hair near the nape is medium brown..should be interesting!

I only got a week to make a decision, and I still have a tube of permanent sitting in the closet. I wish I could just let it be.

I've always applied my gel after scrunching out the excess water with a towel, although I did try to apply it to soaking wet hair for a while, and it just made me hair seem kind of weighed down, which doesn't usually happen to me.
