Can you put a hair serum as heat protection?

well i have a serum in my home and it says that it can be used as a heat protection some people say it will be like frying my hair and some people say no its ok . my hairdresser say that i should not put anything before straightening but i mean come on shouldn't i use a heat protection product before straightening? Please tell me what should i do
