what do you do when a product you bought doesn't work at all?

Just curious about what folks here do when they buy a product and then find that it doesn't work for them at all.

I've seen the forum where you can trade/sell stuff... but if you don't go that route, what do you end up doing?

I've been trying to think of a local charity in my area that might be able to take some of mine... so far, can't think of any.

Depending on how it isn't working for you, it can be worth it to shelve a product till the seasons change. For instance a conditioner that's too heavy for summer use may be awesome in the winter. A gel with a lot of humectants that doesn't work in the winter may work well in Spring or Fall.

You can top a styler that doesn't have enough hold with another that does. For a styler with too much hold, try using less or maybe even watering down if it's a gel. You can also sometimes turn a not quite rich enough conditioner into one you can use by adding oils or aloe to it (not in the bottle). If it's too rich, you could try diluting it or use as a dt. If it's a product with not enough protein, you can add a few drops of Colorful Neutral Protein Filler to your daily amount. If a shampoo doesn't work for your hair, you might like it as a body wash. A too strong shampoo will be less harsh if it's diluted, and this goes for low poos too. Conditioners can be repurposed for shaving as well.

If you truly can't or won't use a product yourself, you could pass it on to a friend or family member. Also homeless or battered women's shelters are often in need of products.

If I am able to get my money back on a product purchased, after having used it (and I find that it doesn't work for my hair at all) , then I will certainly return it back for a refund ASAP. If not, then I will simply throw it away. My family members are only interested in receiving new, unused hair products and so are my friends. In regards to coworkers, they receive gifts from me on holidays and other special occasions, and that is as far as it goes. When it comes to possibly giving a used product away to a charity or shelter, I personally would not feel totally right doing so, due to sanitary reasons. Whenever, I give anything towards a charitable cause, I always provide the organization, charity, or shelter with brand new, unused items(both haircare and personal needs items) for someone to be blessed with. Now, if I happen to purchase a product from an online vendor that doesn't provide refunds or a store that doesn't provide refunds on a product that has been opened, then i will simply throw the product away (if the product is an absolute fail). If the product isn't terribly bad, and especially if it cost me a lot of money to buy, and I can't get a refund back on it, then I will use it up until its all gone. However, I, for sure won't ever purchase it again.

Depends what the product is.

If it's shampoo or conditioner I find other uses for it. For example harsh shampoos I use for cleaning other things and conditioners I use for shaving. Alternatively I have a few friends' and relations' houses who have loads of visitors so dumping shampoo or conditioner isn't an issue as someone else will use it.

If it's a styler then I use it up as I can mix it or layer it under something.
Depending on what the product is I've heard of people using it as everything from shaving gel to facial cleanser.

Thanks everyone... I guess its nice to know that I am not the only one who deals with this problem. I hate feeling like I have wasted money on something, though. That sucks.

Today, after reading this thread, I decided to mix a leave-in conditioner that hasn't worked at all for me into my rinse-out, and then just rinse most of it out as I normally would.

I don't have any close friends who would want the types of products I'm using, so I think my best plan is just to mix the ones I don't like into the ones I do, and eventually use them up that way.

I would suggest mixing the products as you use them, versus mixing all of one product into another all at once.
