Talked to person cutting my hair...thoughts?

OK...so..because I'm terrified of hair cuts and always end up putting it up, anyway (before I discovered the CG thing...), I haven't had my hair cut in over a year. Bad, I know.

ANYWAY....I am having a hard time leaving my hair to do its thing with this heavy weight on it and so tomorrow....I get it cut.

I am going back to the person that has always cut my hair....and I've always been OK with it (never any horror, really....but I've never done CG, either, at that point).

I called this person and talked to her and told her what I was doing. She wasn't totally familiar with it but was with the lauryl stuff...and told me she is using one WITHOUT it...but she did say the problem with cutting hair dry is that you do end up with BIG hair that way. OMG. I don't want BIG hair. My hair is big enough, really.

So what are your thoughts on that?

She is already familiar and knows to cut at the beginning of the C of a curl..she seemed knowledgeable with that.

And how do I know HOW to cut my hair (style, etc). I have no idea what to ask for!

It sounds like she is already pretty knowledgable about cutting curly hair. Maybe she meant that you get big hair when you cut dry because as they mess with your hair, it grows. But if you rinse it afterwards, it goes down. That's what happened at my devacut.

You could always let her do the wet cut, on the curl, etc. and see how it goes. My last stylist cut that way and it was great! (but I moved)

And Good Luck tomorrow! Sending out the good-curly-haircut vibes.

My hair also did not get "big" after a dry cut, Like Curlilocks I just had a Devacut also. I did get a little big while she was cutting it, because of pulling the individual curls out to cut them, but then after styling my usual way, it looks great. Good volume, but by no means big. I've always done well with wet cuts though too, even though I styled by hair less naturally back then. Many of my regular stylists would cut it wet, diffuse it dry, then touch up with scissors when it was dry after that. I think that is less daunting to most stylists than doing a complete dry cut.

Let us know how it goes! It sounds like you have a great stylist though!! I was bald for so long, my old stylist went away, now I have someone new that I like, but it can be hard to find someone you trust and can talk to and keep going back to.

I agree with the other posters... the only way your hair would be "big" with a dry cut is because it disturbs the curl pattern while it's being cut. After that, when you wet it and style it normally, there'd be absolutely no difference.

My hair is so varied in its curl type that any time I get my hair cut and they wet it first, I end up with straggly straight bits sticking out the bottom, and an uneven hair length. It's no good. My wet hair is stick straight, and they cut it as if it were straight. It just doesn't work. I've never actually had a dry cut (like you, I'm just hesitant to even get a cut) but I'm going to try to get one next time. I'd say go for the dry cut, and then both you and your stylist can see how it turns out.

Good luck!

Hey Carrie - I am in the same boat. I found a new stylist through the links here on naturallycurly.com and I am going in tomorrow for a devacut. I have already met with her (this salon encourages coming in for a FREE consultation before you commit - I liked that!) and she had just completed a Devacut workshop given by Lorraine Massey.

I am pretty psyched, but a little nervous also. I have been 'just trimming' my hair - keeping it basically all one length for about 10 years. I will check this thread again on friday and see how you are doing. I'll let you all know how mine turned out as well.

Hey Carrie - how did the cut go? Are you OK with it? I am pretty happy with mine. It is a couple of inches shorter and cut so that it won't pyramid out. I think it will grow out into a great longer style. I like to wear it about shoulder length and right now (with the extra weight off) it's up to my collar. I do have fabulous curl definition, though.

hmmmm...I would be worried about going to that hairstylist. She seems misinformed about cutting curly hair. I have had my hair cut both dry and wet and I always had the best results with a dry cut. I like my hair "big" but cutting the hair dry did not help that...loads of layers did. I go to a curl specialist at the moment and she swears the ONLY way to cut curly hair is dry!! Good luck!!
Honestly...she ROCKED at it. She was sooo open to what I asked for and what I told her. That salon has a number of products without the bad stuff in it.

She did cut my hair wet (I didn't ask for it again dry, though)...but I think she meant BIG as in bigger than what it would be because she is touching it and cutting it....not by how the cut is done, itself.

I LOVED my hair....I did....and I think my hair is in "SHOCK" mode losing 10+ inches. I've always had that...it takes my hair a few days to "adjust", so to speak...but yesterday's hair was fine! I just need to also experiment with the clips on top to see how I want it to look up there for height, etc.

((And I've got to get off the shampoo...man..that is hard!))

The cut I got yesterday was a dry cut and I think I know what she meant by getting 'big' hair. While she was lifting and cutting the separate sections it did get really 'big', but then she co-washed it and applied the Deva products with it soaking wet & blotted it out with a T-shirt. She showed me how to put in the duck clips - sounds like you saw that, too Carrie - and after it was dry(and a little crunchy) she showed me how to use my hands to soften it - get out the crunch.

Today I was a little nervous about styling it on my own, but my results are fabulous and I've been getting lot's of nice comments.

I've got a few from when my hair was still yet yesterday...and a couple when it was almost dry...but the clips are still on top of my head and the hair isn't DONE yet!

carrie640: WOW that's a drastic cut! But you can really see the added curl to the back... cutting a foot of hair off can do that! I think it looks fantastic!

It looks good so far! I'd love to see pics when it's "done".
It does have more curl at the back now that evens out with the front.
