Hey, I've been neglecting my hair a bit to be honest and have decided it's time for a big change. I'm bored of it and have decided to chop it all off. Most of it anyway! I'm in two minds as to what to go for so as well as some advice I thought it would be fun to do a poll for the styles I have in mind too.

The first idea is the one I need advice on please. I really want to try a pixie cut but I'd rather wear it straight/straightish and relax it (sorry to step to the dark side!? lol) I plan to try Organic Root olive oil relaxer. Can anyone tell me whether I can likely achieve the look of the pixies in the attached pics with my 3B hair type? Or would a harsher relaxer be necessary? I am a complete relaxer virgin!

The other idea is a kind of extreme undercut style where the sides and back are shaved super short and the top is a little longer. I don't think I'd relax for this style as the shaved hair would be too short to curl and the longer hair could be flat ironed if I felt like it. Have also attached some pics of the kind of thing I mean.

Thanks for reading and advice very welcome. And please vote in my poll too : )

Bump - anyone? I need those with experience with relaxers to tell me if I'm being unrealistic with the pixie please! I'm hoping to get the cut done in the next couple of weeks.
I wouldn't advise a relaxer - loads of people rock the short 'n' curly look with pixies and such. I think it's super cute!

As for which you should go for . . . without seeing a photo of you / your hair, it's hard to say!

Growing my hair out Rapunzel-style
Thanks, BotticelliBrit! I was looking for curly pixies actually and found a couple I like. To be honest I flat iron my hair maybe once a week, naughty me. Pixie would be too short to flat iron though, at least the shortest bits would be. I don't know I think with a pixie I'd want it straight, still like the curly ones it's just a different look. If it was staying curly I think I'd go for the undercut style, that or an undercut pixie if there's such a thing - so have it cut pixie short and then back and sides shaved. I figure the longer part would be just about long enough to flat iron. So a hybrid of the two ideas lol. Also will get a recent pic of me and put it as my profile pic when I have a min.
Have you seen thecurlystace on Youtube? She had an Asymmetrical Haircut that looked really cute curly.

But, hey, it's your hair and if you want to rock it straight then I'm sure it'll look cool too

I haven't but I will take a look, thank you! I am confident it will look good straight and short (rather than straight and long) just don't want to damage it : / Although if I do I guess I am ok with the idea of just shaving it all and letting it grow back but ideally I'd rather not have to. Will try and get some more advice before any final decisions. I will go back to curly at some point if I do relax.
Relaxers are pretty damaging too. I'll admit, I don't know anything about the Organic Root olive oil relaxer you mentioned, but anything that alters your hair can't be good.

It's not the same, but I used relaxers / chemical straighteners from the time I was around 14 or so (can't remember exactly), until I was about 22ish and I was straightening daily. When I decided to go natural I realised my hair was totally wrecked, both from the heat damage and the chemicals. It was no wonder my hair never seemed to grow – it was all just breaking off!!

It took me ages to get it healthy again, so I always just tell people to be wary. Of course, like I said, I don't know anything about the method you mentioned. I used the YUKO hair straightening, which I imagine is probably quite different.

Thanks, I appreciate any input. This olive oil one is meant to be gentler and is no lye. I wouldn't be expecting big results if I was a 4b but think 3b might be ok. Maybe I'll just have to try it! Only way to know for sure I guess. Like I said I don't mind a huge amount if it didn't go well and I had to get a full on buzzcut, I just wouldn't relax again!
This is crazy! I've been thinking the exact same thing (pixie cut wise). However, I don't relax or straighten my hair, thus my hesitation. I think my hair would be super curly and I don't know how it would look. I like the idea of an undercut, just don't know if I could pull it off.

Like BotticelliBrit siad, I think we'd have to see a picture of your hair to really be able to help.

I got the asymmetrical cut like Curly Stace, but mine is longer on the shorter side than hers is (if that makes sense). I'm thinking I might keep the asymmetrical cut and just got shorter on that side, for a more drastic look. I really love the asymmetrical cut, but I keep thinking that a pixie would be so easy to deal with.

I agree, a picture would be in order to know what would look good. I'd recommend not relaxing either, but that's your decision if you want to. Although coming on a naturally curly board, I don't think you will get much advice about relaxing as we are more into embracing the curls here. A good indicator of how straight or curly your hair would be with a short cut is take a look at the hair by your roots. If you have root curl, it will be pretty curly still. If there's little root curl it will be more straight.

I'm so jealous of you ladies that can get a curly pixie! Mine is straight when I have a pixie and the ends would flip out weird when it grew to a certain length. But that was also before I actually took care of my hair properly. With growing my hair out I've been drooling over pixies again too, wondering if it would look different now that I've shown my hair some love.

Thanks, DaniGirl88. Yay another pixie dreamer lol. I have seen some nice curly pixies its just not a look I want for myself I guess. Also many people can pull off an undercut! If I don't relax I'm likely going that way myself even though I mega want a straight pixie. I actually just need to get rid of a lot of my hair some how as right now it's just totally impractical and I don't have the time nor the inclination to pamper it all the blooming time! Plus I just want to try it and refuse to believe certain styles are only for straight haired people : D

Thanks, sixelamy. See you want a curly pixie, we want straight ones lol... grass is greener. I know I may have got a bit of evil eye (jokes) for mentioning the R word. But you can't get good advice on a straight hair forum, they don't get it. Like I was saying to DaniGirl I have to do something as A. my hair rules me right now and no time for that. It looks rubbish most of the time. And B. I want to try something totally different. I get major pixie cut envy lol.
Just want to say if your hair is threat curly I like that third pic with the curly front. I don't like the idea of anyone relaxing (because I wish my hair were actually curly instead of wavy so I project -lol). But that one would allow you to do different things. I think it would probably work on most face shapes because of the longer front. And if you have access to a curly specialist that would be the best thing to go and consult. They'd be able to look at your hair properties and cowlicks and see what your hair would do.
2a medium porous, You can see my wavy tutorials here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?lis...ZNxhBHSXAW40OQ and my wavy blog is The Wavy Nation http://wavynation.wordpress.com

I'm definitely not brave enough yet for an undercut. I envy people who are brave with their hair. Lol. I know the feeling about having to get rid of some of it! I was there about a year ago and didn't realize it, but looking back on pictures, I had the dreaded triangle shape. After I went in and got my hair cut by a curly trained stylist, it changed my life. My hair has inverted layers to it and stacks nicely now. But, I can never go long with all of that hair again. It took forever to style and I just don't have time for that, especially in the morning. I keep finding myself wanting to go shorter and shorter!

Whatever you decide, please post pics! =)

Relaxer isn't an evil word, you can do what you want. It's just that many people come here to get away from that, so it's not something anyone would advise to do. Not giving you crap for it Every forum believes in something. I have no experience, so I can't personally give advice on that anyway.

Well, with one of these cuts you posted, I think you could easily keep your curly hair. I love the short messy look, if you can't control your hair. Just put some wax in to texturize and go! You could always get it cut and see what it looks like curly first, and then relax if you totally hate it. I've just seen too many people on here with horror stories and wish they'd never done it. Don't want to see that happen to you too.

But as for the cuts - without knowing what you look like - I like the 4th one!
