Hair type confusion

I never thought id be asking what my hair type is. Ive been natural for a very long time but i always wore my hair flatironed . About a year ago i started taking better care of my hair and decided to straighten my hair less . Ive always been positive i was mostly 3c (except my temples and around my ears is 4a). But after having a bad salon visit and ending up with heat damage ive noticed my new growths curls are a lot smaller than they used to be. My roots curl to about the size of a narrow straw, but are not coily. They are still very S shaped. If that makes any sense. They dont look like any 3c hair ive seen but look nothing like the hair at my temples which is 4a. Hair type isnt a big deal to me but im trying to imagine what my hair would look like if i cut off all the damage.

This probably doesnt help much but an "average curl" (talking about my new growth here), is about 1/4 of an inch.

Im just wondering if im going to be disappointed if i were to cut of my "looser curls"

I had a good veiw from the top but it wont upload. You could really see the transition in the hair . You can see where the texture changes in the pic above but its not a good example.
Heres a top view. I had to drastically lower the size of the file so it could upload . In not very clear anymore but this is the best i can get until washday.

Curl pattern an change plus if there is a noticeable demarcation where it changes it is likely the lower hair has some damage doing in from straightening and such. It may just take some time to gradually trim out the old. Pattern type is so elusive really as most people have at least two of not three patterns growing. What are your other properties? Like weight, density, elasticity etc. ?

Well my hair is extremely dense, to the point where i have a hard time seeing my scalp. I also cant get my hair into a ponytail unless its streched quite a bit. I believe my hair is fine, most likely medium fine, i dont have much to compare to. My hair naturally is very low porosity. Only my ends are medium and high porosity (from bleaching). When my hair is wet it pretty elastic but the further down the strand the stiffer and less elastic it is. I get a lot of breakage when my hair is wet. Itll be like 1 inch pieces. Im assuming its mostly end pieces.

As i said im really considering cutting my hair. Im just trying to get a mental picture of what it would look like. I do have different textures all over but i can mostly only see my roots in the front which are smaller thsn the rest of my hair. At this point i have no idea what they are. Im just assuming 3c in the back and 4a ish in the front. I guess it doesnt matter much. Im just worried that once i cut it i wont get the results i expected, or maybe even have no idea what to do with it.
I think you are probably right. It's very common for people to have tighter curl around the face and looser around the back.

You have a lovely face and can probably wear just about any style you choose. We're all our own harshest critics. We see things others never notice. Don't want to diminish you concerns, you don't want to be disappointed if your hair type isn't what you expect it to be. But you could try to look at it a different way--you want to have the healthiest hair, best hair, no matter what the type. Pretty hair is pretty hair.
chupie likes this.

Also, remember it's a little hard to tell how your healthy hair will shape out when you get that bottom off (which with the severe breakage you are describing might be good). What's at the bottom of your length affects the top and sometimes it's a little hard to tell how it will shake out.

I agree, I think it is going to be awesome though.

Thanks a lot guys. Honestly i really hate that pic i posted lol. My face looks like im like "duuurrr " but it was clearer than my other photos.

Its not that i have any real problem with having type 4 hair. I just really enjoy defined curls. Ive noticed that my roots dont clump the way the ends of my hair does and that worries me. I prefer a nice curly wash n go. But it is what it is i guess lol. The strange thing is my bangs clump just fine. So maybe it wont be as much of a problem once the ends are cut.
You have to remember that weight of the length is changing the curl at the top. Also, you new growth is only 1/4 of an inch! Things change as it grows out. You may want to cut off some of the damaged hair--maybe to the point of the most breakage? and work you way out.

My new growth is actually about 4 inches. That was my mistake. When i said my average curl was about 1/4th of an inch i meant the curls themselves. Like if i were to cut 1/4th of an inch off it would form a complete circle. Lol i didnt realize how hard it would be to explain. I guess im talking about the width of the curls, not the length. I was hoping the picture of the hair strands would make it less confusing but i dont know how well you can see the picture. Im on my phone so of course its super small to me.

Sorry for the confusion. Im confusing even myself XD
So like about a pencil diameter. I think that generally shakes out 3c.

I thought so. Of course there are all kinds of sizes. I think thats a pretty good estimate of the majority. Im still not sure im ready to cut it . But will definately trim
Do you have a trusted stylist? They could look and see where the wort damage ends so that it won't travel up. So you can maybe get away with unnecessary length loss.
