Do you scrunch it in or rake it through? How much do you typically use and as it is drying do you get a gel cast? I can't ever feel the gel cast but it looks like it has one then when I scrunch it when it is dry there is hold. I'm not sure I'm applying enough.

shampoo: rye flour

If I had the length of your hair (assuming your profile pic is accurate), I'd probably use a quarter to half dollar size amount - but that's just me.

If you air dry, you should get a cast. I always just scrunch in my gels and then gently sweep the rest on my hands across the top so I don't get frizz.
2c-3a - med-coarse - normal-high porosity - high density

COLOR: henna, amla & indigo
: glycerin in high/low dews, polyquat-10 & 11, parabens
My hair is that long and I use way more than a quarter size. I scrunch it in. Wonder why I'm not feeling the gel cast?

Do you put anything else in your FSG, or is it just plain?

I don't get much a gel cast from FSG alone, either. And when I put it under something else, it seems to kill off some of the gel cast I would normally get from using a commercial gel by its lonesome. Maybe it's just something about my hair, I dunno.

That said, I get more of a gel cast from FSG when I put pectin in it (which I haven't done for a while now). I don't think you can really overdo basic FSG application. I'm finally going to try agave in mine when the dew points start to rise; I bet I'll get a nice gel cast out of that!

I diffuse every day and I still get a cast from my gel. I use Jane Carter Hair Nourishing Cream to "scrunch out the crunch". After scrunching it out, I DO go through it once with a super wide tooth comb; if I don't do this, I lose quite a bit of my volume. After that, it's "hands off".

I'm definitely a "curly" 2c. Sometimes curly and sometimes just wavy upper layer with a ringlety under layer. My hair has been thick and coarse since birth. Strawberry blonde in color that can and does change depending on the type and amount of light.

All in all, I'm happy with my hair type but almost for sure think yours is prettier.
I tend to use a lot of product, especially with FSG. I put way more than I ever thought I would! My hair sucks up product. I also put in a few drops of lavender, some honey, and gum Arabic. My hair might not have been loving the honey a while ago but the dews are a bit higher right now so it seems to be working better right at this moment. The honey gives a nice hold, and the gum Arabic helps with hold too.

My first try when I made it last fall was straight flaxseed gel with agave. That worked well but I just kept experimenting and ended up liking honey a bit more. The combo of honey and gum arabic in the flaxseed gel seems good at the moment for me. But I tend to like hard hold so it just takes experimentation with amounts of each thing. I must scrunch out whatever crunch I get. I also diffuse.

"Plain" Flaxseed gel has almost zero hold for me; I need way more hold than that to get me through the day.

I'm still experimenting with trying different things in addition to and in place of my homemade stuff but I haven't found the product that beats it quite yet! Always looking for a miracle product though lol!

How do you vet the honey to mix and not settle to the bottom? I have wavy hair so anything mildly heavy pulls my waves out.

It's hard to overdo with FSG. It often does not give me a gel cast either, but sometimes there is a light cast.

My hair isn't as long as the OP's. I'd say I use a quarter sized amount (or maybe more?), though today I tried less.

Since I started experimenting with gum arabic (and in the past, with xanthan gum), I bought an immersion blender to mix everything up because I couldn't seem to mix the powders without getting lumps. Everything gets really incorporated now!

I'd just start out with a small amount of honey in the FSG to see how you like it!

I cover my hands with the flaxseed gel and kinda rake and scrunch it though my hair. I repeat that 3-4 times (I don't know how much product that ends up being though). After, I typically re-wet my hair (just a couple scrunches under water) because otherwise, my hair will dry frizzy and not very curly because of the manipulation. My FSG is flaxseeds + gelatin.

To the people using a quarter sized amount, my question is how? That would only be enough to cover about 2 curls or so for me.

  • Nature's Gate Biotin Conditioner
  • AG Recoil Curl Activator
  • AG Plastique or Flaxseed & Gelatin hair gel
  • Gelatin as protein treatment

Also, I combine with FSG with two other products when I scrunch it in, so that beefs it up a bit I suppose. I don't put in the quarter size all at once either. I put on some FSG initially, a little more after scrunching out water, and a little more halfway through diffusing.

Yeah I will def try it. I think if it had a tad bit more hold we would be best friends forever.

I guess I use less than that now... I don't measure it. I just keep going til it "feels right."

I think I just got lazy and forgot about FSG for some reason... I need that in my life again but I also don't want to get too attached to it because I might be in a dorm (fingers crossed) soon. I remember when I did make it, that I would always use almost all of the gel I made if not all of it. I would use plain FSG without adding anything though. I know a lot of people like FSG as their first "layer" before applying a harder gel on top. In other words, some people use it kind of like a primer. That might be worth a try, I remember getting awesome results both ways. But then again, when my hair has more layers and is shorter it tends to look curlier anyways. I'd probably do plain FSG just because I like the kind of tousled/bed head "not so perfect" look right now.
