Testing gels

Like Tree3Likes

I have been searching for a natural hard hold gel but keep coming back to my big tub of ecostyler clear. It's weird to use but it does give me good clumps and definition and its cheap. For some reason I was searching for products without pvp but maybe my hair really likes pvp after all. The argan oil and olive oil ones have yellow #5 so I can't use them. I was getting terrible frizz and stringy curls despite clarifying and doing a deep treatment. I found this in the back of my cabinet and feel like it's really working for my hair right now.

I wish I could use pvp laden products - it's like it's in everything. I'm glad it works well for you, though! I've always wanted to try Eco clear in normal dew points. I'm sorry your experiment with the Ion gel didn't work out as well as you had hoped.

You know, I've never had a gel flake on me. (Thank heavens for something!) I wonder if it's what we leave in underneath a gel that causes flaking (like some ingredients not playing well together)? Or whether some of us just have hair that gel likes to flake on?

Just curious as that's one of the things I have a hard time wrapping my head around, since it doesn't happen to me.

I've also never had a gel flake on me...and I've tried a lot. Including ecostyler. Maybe it's because I don't have dark hair so I can't tell 😵

Low Shampoo: Aveda Be Curly Shampoo
Conditioner: Tresemme Naturals Nourishing Moisture/ Perfectly Undone
Treatments: SM Black Castor Oil Masque/ Packet Gelatine
Leave in: Redken Diamond Oil Conditioner
Styling: AG Recoil Curl Activator/V05 Mega Hold/Cornstarch
Refresh: Redken Fresh Curls Curl Boost

Between Waist and Hip Length (stretched), 2C with 2B roots
I have actually never experienced flaking from any of the Ecostyler gel versions that are out there. I also didn't experience any type of buildup issues with either the version that contained PVP, and the newer version that doesn't. The only problem is that I can't use it back-to-back in my hair, or else it really dries my curls out.

Now, whenever I buy a new styling product and use it for the first time, I always use it on freshly cleansed and conditioned hair, all by itself w/o anything else. So, that way, if a product happens to flake on me, then I know that it's truly the product, and not anything else that contributed to the flaking.

It's definitely the gels that flake. When I have a product I suspect flakes i will clarify and try alone on a day I don't have to work. But without a leave in my hair will be dry so the gels need to be able to work with a leave in conditioner.

I think ecostyler is a little drying. Maybe thats why I put it on the back shelf in the winter. I'll have to remember that I need more moisture in the winter.
I use and do like EcoStyler and have experienced occasional flaking. It was a long time ago, so I don't remember what I used with it. I've long suspected that ANY flaking was the result of the combinations of products used together. There's a post on the "Natural Haven" that examines just that theory. There's also a very interesting YouTube video of a woman who tests products together on her hands. The results were positively eye opening!
The testing products together in my hand has no impact on how they react in my hair. And combing products doesn't effect how they flake in my hair. For me if a product causes flaking it causes flaking no matter what and I'm not gonna use it. Once it flakes I'm done with it. Sometimes using less of the product does mean its less likely to flake but I like to coat all my hair in products to get good frizz control so i need to be able to use as much as i want without flaking.

I often wonder if dark hair leads to more flaking or if its just not noticeable on lighter hair. I also wonder if those that never have flaking simply use much less product. I use a lot.

It sounds like flaking may not have as much to do with that as it is something else. Or maybe they're miscible to start with, but once they dry they 're not as absorbed onto the hair, and when the gel cast breaks it just falls off. Gel is a coating, after all.

I wonder if flaking occurs more with lower porosity than high?

I've only ever experienced flaking/white bits with one gel and that was KCCC. Yet another reason I hate that stuff!

So the Alba botanica gel didnt flake alone but also didn't do much for style. I really like how ecostyler helps clump the curls. I used the alba today on the ends and it seems to help with hold. I'm getting a lottle fluffy aleady and its only 1130 so I'm going to need to touch it up. But at least it's dry.
