I'm bursting into tears over allergic reaction... PLEASE HELP!

Like Tree11Likes

After hearing so many awesome reviews about Sauve Naturals, I decided to give it a go two weeks ago. I thought that it would be great for me. I used the Coconut one and my hair didn't seem to have a problem. I used it as a leave in (just a little bit) and my hair seemed fine. I only used it maybe three or four times at most. It takes a lot of that conditioner to get my hair detangled!

About a week ago, I went and bought the Strawberry and Wild Cherry a Blossom. My scalp has been messed up. I noticed that my hair has been flaky more than usual; about the time that I started using Sauve. However, I noticed severe itching this week. The last time that I washed my hair with the conditioner was two days ago. Yesterday, I was so itchy and flaky that I had to wash today to relieve some of the pressure. I didn't use the Sauve because it occurred to me that the only thing new in my routine was the Sauve.

I have raised bumps over my entire body, a rash that makes my skin feel like I have scales, severe red and flaky scalp and itchy throat. I've had these itchy bumps for about a week now. I just thought they were stubborn mosquitoes bites... now I realize they're a symptoms of my reaction! I look so scary and disgusting. I have an emergency appointment with my doctor in the morning and already took Benadryl. If I feel any worse, I may just go straight to the ER.

The thing that is the most upsetting is that when I washed and conditioner my hair (with my regular SM coconut and hibiscus products) is that I lost so much hair!!! I have never lost so much hair in the shower. It looked so horrifying. I took a photo, but I'm on my phone. Can allergic reactions cause hair loss? Is there anything that I should be doing to prevent more hair loss? I have never had this happen to me before.

I'm in tears over this entire situation -- plus the pain is unbearable! I'm afraid this is going to damage or thin my hair. My mom (a hair dresser) said that I stopped before any damage occurred and the hair loss wasn't all that bad since I have hip length hair... but I know it's bad! Especially because I used a wide tooth comb, not even a Denman. I was so gentle. I'm just so upset.

I just don't know what to do. Any advice would be helpful...

Here's a photo of the hair loss. Just looking at it is enough to make me want to sob!

Not only that, but since I wrote up my post: I know have bumps all over my face. The ones on my legs and torso are getting worse. My scalp is horrifying too. I'm about to just give up being CG... I never had these problems before. I just feel like I'm going to go bald from this entire ordeal.

I noticed a lot of hair loss from the last two hair washes too.. but this has literally only been 1 day between washes and I lost this much hair. What am I supposed to do?

Bookgrdngirl - how frightening. I hope your allergic reaction has subsided or that you are reading this after going to an ER. I've never heard of someone having such a total body reaction to shampoo. Is it possibly something else?

Have you had severe allergies in the past? The one good thing is that you were so very smart to take Benadryl. Perhaps you need to carry that anti-allergy injection that people keep with them.

I hope to hear that you are much recovered. Please post back to us.
2/c-3a Coarse hair med. density.
Highly porous. Color over grey.
I love all the Curl Junkie products. Still experimenting with gels and curl creams. Still hoping for 2nd day hair....

Do you think that since my hair is coarse and hip length that it may look worse than it really is?

What an awful situation! I hope the medicine kicks in soon so you start feeling better. We are always the most concerned with what's going on with our bodies. I know even when I lose a little hair I freak out so it's only natural you are. I'm sure it looks worse that it really is and the stress of the whole situation doesn't help!
Hang in there, feel better, it'll be okay!

2Cish curls, crazy at best. My products are everywhere looking for that HG!
I'm so sorry this happened to you! Hopefully you will be better soon. I can only offer advice on the hair lost in the shower since I too have waist/hip length hair. Believe me that much is normal! I actually lose a little more than that on a 5 day/weekly basis when I wash my hair. I used to panic about it too but my hair has not thinned at all, it's just that our individual hair strands are so long.

I'm sorry this has happened to you, I don't generally suffer allergies but a few months ago I suddenly developed an allergy to hair dye and had red, raised, weeping sores on my scalp, it was so uncomfortable and a bit scary - I have thin hair anyway and psoriasis, so I really didn't need it. I think the fact that I realised what was going on and stopped dyeing helped and hopefully the same applies to you - you know what's happened and have stopped using the culprit already. Definitely get checked out though - itchy throat from an allergy isn't good. Re the hair in the shower, considering the length of your hair I really don't think that looks like a lot of shed hair, so try not to stress about that.
Hope you're feeling a little better by now.

I would definitely say it's normal for me when I haven't my washed my hair for 4-5 days... but never when I only had one day between washes. That's what really upset me. I have no thinning either; there's no bald spots. I am so grateful that my hair is okay!!

Now that my reaction has subsidized for the most part, I wonder if the extra hair loss were shed hairs that weren't distributed or breakage from the reaction. It totally makes sense what you're saying about the length of the hair. My hair is also coarse as well. A few hairs look like they're so much more due to the width of the individual strands as well.

I'm just happy that I didn't experience any thinning, bald spots, and the reaction wasn't lethal! Luckily I realized what it was before the symptoms progressed. Thank you so much for your help!! It means a lot to me.

I did some research and found Head and Shoulders Co-Wash which has really relieved the itchiness, help the inflammation and dandruff for me.

I got lucky they said because I caught it early on and stopped it! I just started using my regular hair products again and my scalp is still sore... but no reactions and my scalp is doing much better than I thought! I'm hoping that within the next two weeks that my scalp will be completely back to normal. The hives on my body have improved a lot too; sadly I think I am going to have some scarring. I'm going to start applying rosehip oil to my skin to ease the scarring.

Thank you so much for your care and concern!!!

I'm definitely feeling much better! I've been using Head and Shoulders Co-Wash which has helped me so, so much from the itching and dandruff. My scalp is still pretty sore, but it's so much better. I think the fact that I didn't use it very much and I caught it early on is what saved me from super severe damaged. Safe to say, I'll never try Sauve again! :P

I think my skin is going to be permentantly scarred, but I'm hoping that rosehip oil will ease it away. My legs look like they've been burned with a match. I can handle scars on my legs though -- at least, I didn't lose my hair or have scarring on my face!

I'm so sorry you went through this. How very frightening!

I just wanted to say that tamanu oil is also good for preventing scarring. I got some from Mountain Rose Herbs, and I have had good luck with it helping me heal from new acne scars (the old scarring is still there, unfortunately). It's a very thick consistency and doesn't smell the best, but it is pretty effective, at least for me.

You may also find it beneficial to go to a massage therapist at some point. They have techniques for breaking up scar tissue that may be helpful to you.

Wow, what a terrible ordeal. I feel somewhat responsible because I suggested Suave Wild Cherry Blossom conditioner in one of your older threads I'm so very sorry but I am glad you are feeling better. Suave works well for some of us CGs but definitely not for others. We all just have to find what works for us, which can be a road filled with lots of trial and error.

I haven't had any problems so far with Shea Moisture... but after this experience with Suave, I'm going to be extremely careful with new products. I'm going to test things out on patches on my skin and double-read ingredients! I've had allergic reactions to DevaCurl too, so I'm hoping that by comparing the Suave Naturals to Deva's No Poo and One Condition that I may be able to figure out a trigger for my reaction.

Were you able to figure out what ingredient it was or was it just SheaMoisture in general? I'm so sorry to hear that you also have scarring. Did it take you a long time to recover? Are you feeling better now?

I never knew hair products could do this!

So many hugs sent your way!!

I use the rosehip oil normally on my face to keep my acne away; as well as to help fade scar marks and acne scars. It's pretty effective.

I have about 5-20 scars on each of my legs and 10 scars on each of my arms. I'm hoping that maybe the hives just haven't completely healed yet and they're not going to scar. I doubt that they're not scars... but I'm hopeful! At the very least, I just hope that maybe they'll be the type of scars that fade quickly.

I'll keep the massage therapist in mind! Thank you so much!
