What Surprised You the Most?

Long story short, 40 years old, never saw my natural texture. Grew up in a family of straight hairs and figured I just got the "bad hair"- unmanageable, frizzy, fluffy. Found 'cones and the flat iron and thought I had it figured out. Right up until my hair started snapping off an inch from my scalp.

A friend suggested I might actually have wavy hair and should try the Curly Girl method. I figured I had nothing to lose, so here we are.

I started CG 6 weeks ago. It turns out, I don't have wavy hair. I have spirals. I have half an inch of new growth, but my hair is much shorter than it was 6 weeks ago due to shrinkage. (I made a CG Progress album on my phone and take a picture every day. Kinda stupid, I know.) I'm just ... surprised.

Anybody else get surprised by their hair?
i was surprised -- thought i had frizzy hair, maybe some waves... one week into the cg method and it turned out i have 3a hair. my poor hair just needed moisture! i think that has happened to so many of us.

I'm 2 years on the CG method, and even after all that time was recently surprised by how curly my hair actually is. As a baby I had 3B Shirley Temple curls and thought they disappeared forever (lol, your mother brushing your hair every day will do that to them). I only just got to see my natural texture over 2 months ago; it was covered up by henna and hydrogen peroxide and a lack of knowledge about how to style my hair technique wise. Before that I had spirals that flattened into huge very loose waves... now they're spiraling more. Sometimes they turn into those ringlets I had as a kid... never thought I had this much curl left.

Same, I've been amazed at how much curl I actually have. I assumed when I started CG that I would just enhance the waves that had always been there, but lo and behold, two years later, I have actual curls hiding in there!

Also, I have been surprised (and freaking delighted) to find this forum and realize how many others are dealing with the same hair frustrations I've had, from across the texture spectrum. I've traveled down the rabbit hole of tips/products/DIY and it's been super fun to geek out on hair stuff with other people who get it!
2a canopy, 2c/3a everywhere else
Medium porosity/density
Modified CG since 2014

Working on loving my hair, no matter what kind of a day it's having.
This forum is SO AMAZING. I've been binge reading it, thread after thread, somewhat to get ideas on technique and products, but I think mostly just to be around people who get it. Nobody IRL really understands. They just want to give me advice on how to continue straightening my hair.

My doctor told me yesterday that I look younger with my hair like this. That was pretty awesome.

I am modified CG and I never knew my hair was curly, I knew it was wavy, sort of 2C-ish when I first became a member here - now, I dont think anyone would say my hair is 2C (except for me, on occasion). Right, in my younger days, I tamed my hair within an inch of its life; I did not use a flat iron (they werent around when my hair was all one length, and long); but I did not know how to manage my natural curl and neither did stylists back then. I am so glad that naturally curly hair has become an art!
I was surprised that I could actually get my hair to grow, like alot. For the last 10 years I always had to cut my hair if it got below my shoulders because the ends would get so fried. I just assumed long hair wasn't an option for me anymore. But once I started babying it and going full CG, with good products, my hair is now BSL when dry, longer when wet, and still going.
love your hair!!!!
