Hard hold gel ideas?

Like Tree8Likes

Hey all, just wondering if anyone has come across a new discovery for a hard hold gel.

Backrgound- I have used BRHG for years but just yesterday I got another conflicting piece of info from the salon I order from, with the lady telling me they can't order it in anymore because it's discontinued. Now, I'm not saying that it's discontinued for sure (I've been told this by sales associates before and it's turned out not to be true), but after all of the recent posts and threads related to the questionable fate of BRHG, I'm just getting frustrated with the company and want a new "old reliable." I'm tired of being concerned my fave gel is going to disappear, so I'm on the lookout for a new one.

Anyways! I like lots of strong hold, and crunch is ok. (I just scrunch it out.) Thinner consistency is ideal. I like MGA sculpting gel, but it's not perfect for humidity for me. Spiralicious seems to have stopped working for me for some reason...

(Wondering also if anyone has tried Curlisto gels or raw curls?)
3a/3b Normal-high porosity, Medium texture, High density
Live in Canada- hot summers, freezing winters- dry dry dry
CJ cleanser or daily fix, and smoothing condish
CJ Pattern Pusha/Curl Queen/MGA sculpting gel/UFDCM
Trying out and loving deva heaven in hair as a regular condish and then using a few pumps of UFDCM then LALSG then air dry. Amazing definition.
Coconut oil pre-poo once a week or so
Diffuse, trying to air dry
Hi, Curls80, I was just going to start a post about a great hard hold gel. I ordered from Sweet Curls Elixir, her Crazy Curly Hard Hold gel. I had sea kelp added to mine, and the results the past couple of days have been great! I dont mix it with anything, it works best for me that way which is great because I dont generally like layering products. I get that it is inconvenient because it is not available on the ground but it hold my hair all day in the heat and humidity, and I look like I have a LOT of curls!
OMG I'm gonna have to try this. Spiralicious has worked well for me as a replacement for BRHG but it's not perfect. Going to order right now!!
Type 3a, fine, highly porous (though much better after quitting the chemical dyes) 70% gray dying with henna/indigo/black walnut professionally every 4 weeks

Modified CG:
Shampoo - Indigo Hair and Scalp Cleansing Cream
Rinse Out - Kenra Moisturizing Conditioner
Deep tx - try weekly but get lazy - Curl Junkie Curl Rehab
Gels - Jessicurl Spiralicious, MGA Sculpting Gel, Matrix Total Results Curl Super Defrizzer Gel
I may just do that. I've ordered from her in the past, but yeah it's more inconvenient especially because I'm in Canada. But I think I may bite the bullet and order again....

I will always swear by CJ Curl Queen. It's a watery consistency, but creates a crunch and tons of shine if you let it air dry.

Alissa suggested it when I told her what my hair was and was not doing in the warmer weather.

The voice of desperation has told me to try Tigi Catwalk again for frizz control and curl defining, cone and all. Still didn't work. So today I added in a dab of my husband's Got2be Spiking Glue. Seems to be holding up but it's early yet.

I don't love the price of curl junkie (mainly because ordering this product in Canada is extra expensive) but I love the products. I will try again to make sure it wasn't a fluke (lol!) but I did like the results.

I am loving how my hair is managing with the hard hold gel. As the day progresses, instead of droop and frizz, my curls hold and my hair gets bigger, more full. I dont spend a lot of time out of doors, so maybe if I did the end result would be different but I really like the hold.

Yeah, she recommended the curl cream under the hard hold gel for me because of how porous I am, as she said she's porous as well and it helps her. I've tried the hard hold gel about a year ago but you know how different combos and different shampoos and conditioners make such a difference!

Yes, its a mystery to me why and how shampoos and conditioners make such a difference, since they get washed out (I dont use a leave in but I do use SM's Hold and Shine spray). Lately I have been using SM JBCO and VO5 Kiwi lime and my hair is great. I LOVE that SM shampoo - for some reason it is just "right" for my hair!
I couldn't get her curl cream to work for me for some reason. I am interested in hearing how her hard hold gel works for you! I ended up buying BRHG and I currently wear it over Curls in a bottle. The results are okay. I think I had a fluke hit and had really good results when I used it with KCCC but it was a one time thing since KCCC is so finicky for me. I ordered Pattern Pusha and I am going to try that. If that is a bust, I will move on to try UFDCM (but I wonder if I can get away with applying it to damp hair instead of soaking wet. applying products to soaking wet hair= sad hair). I still want to try Max Green Alchemy Sculpting Gel too. Ugh its fun trying products but it can be a pain finding the right combo. I feel sometimes, once I find a good combo, season changes or something in my regimen changes and I can't get repeat results.
2c/3a in the canopy 3b everywhere else ~ Normal to High Porosity~ Fine but A LOT of hair ( So high density?)

Poo: Jason's Dandruff Shampoo/ Elucence Moisuture Benefits
RO: Tresemme Botanique
Styling: CJ Curl Fix as LI, Curling jelly or CJPP or CIAB, Topped with BRHG.
Protein Treatment: Curl Junkie Repair Me
CurlyCor, at present I am using the hard hold gel only. No coctailing, I dont much like that approach although I have done it. I prefer using one styling product, that way I know whether it works or not. In the cooler weather, I used LALSG and then as it warmed up here in Wisconsin, I added Sweet Curls FSG. But then humidity set in so I consulted with her and have been using only the Hard hold gel now. It seems to work quite well for me.

Yes, I totally agree finding right products is a severe pain!

You asked about Raw Curls in your original post. I've never used it, but I know that the Polished Curl on YouTube loves Raw Curls products. I'll bet she has a review of the gel somewhere, or you could probaby even contact her and ask her what she thinks of it.

The only other gel I've used that I like that fits the bill (hard hold, crunchy, runny) is Intelligent Nutrients Styling Gel. I recently cut it out of my routine, though, because I thought that the alcohol was drying my hair out. But I am now thinking that maybe my hair was dry for other reasons and am going to try adding it back in. It was a very lightweight gel, which is why I liked it. I don't know about availability in Canada, and it is kind of pricey. Some salons carry it; there might be a salon locator on the Intelligent Nutrients website.
