Anyone use the B&A method of washing/application/styling

Thanks lush! It's not as lovely or as long as yours but the length is sure helping the curls out!

Ok, unfortunately I got the card reader to work, now I have to show you the super crappy hair pics. No seriously, i'm not kidding. On the upside, it gave me a chance to wear my lovely new stretchy headband.

You'll see what I mean by lack of definition and lots of poof. Crappy hair pics

Aww thanks MsG It's just that if you compare it to my other pics, I've got much less curl and definition going on. I know it was because I brushed through the gel. I just know it. Oh well, lesson learned! Not all heads of hair can stand up to the brush!

Lush.....I love that headband......I don't think I could pull off wearing it but it looks cool on you

Ok, got the whole B&A system, having mixed results. First time , reported somewhere above, I finger combed through the B&A gel and let it air dry, it was flat, lifeless, and looked really bad until I used the curling iron to add some curls. This is normal for my hair though, when I am air drying. The reason I do it is that my hiar turns smoother and the curling iron curl give it some body.

I let my hair sit for a day just putting it in a ponytail.

Today, I shampooed twice, conditioned letting it sit for a good minute or so, rinsed and squeezed out excess drips, then turned upside down and brushed with a vent brush, finger combed in two half dollar size puddles of gel and blotted with a towel, let it sit for about 20 minutes and then diffused on low air/warm heat also upside down. Added a few curls, shook and let it go.

The results were that I had funky roots, I don't think my hiar likes the upside down brushing thing. ButI had good volume and my hair feels great, it feels soft and moisturized, it doesn't feel dried out or frazzled from shampooing like I thought it would. It has decent curl but again, the upside down thing really disrupts my curl pattern too.

I'm encouarged by the shampooing/conditioning and I know that my hair loves this gel. The next time I shampoo (probably Sat.) I will basically do the same thing but do it all right side up and see how my hair reacts. Not sure how my hair would react to brushing the gel through but that would be interesting to try too.

The one thing I can so this far is that my hiar responded to being diffused better than it had been. I had quit diffusing because of the frizz I was getting but today the frizz is minimal and I have great body, if I can get my curl pattern straightened out I will be really happy.

I am also amazed that I don't have crunchy hair, I thought that the B&A gel always gave me crunchy hair without a leave in but any crunch is easily scrunched out and gone.

MH-Are you brushing and then diffusing yours upside down? I would love to get the body and curl you are achieving

What kind of brushes are you all using?? I'm very curious now. Do you use a paddle brush??
Mostly 4a..crazy hair

Currently using: 100% Aloe Vera Gel , VO5 Conditioners for Co-Washes, Jojoba and Africa's Best Oils, GV Biolage Conditioning Balm , Cream of Nature Detangling Shampoo, ACV rinses, Herbal Tea Rinses (rarely), Alba Botanica Leave-in

Goal: healthy hair and longer hair

Brushing the gel through didn't work nearly so well as just brushing then putting gel in but it's not a terrible hair day.

lush it looks a bit like you didn't get gel on that area in the back. The rest of the curls are spirally just in smaller clumps looks like in the pics. ETA: we're all our own worst critic, I wish my bad hair days looked like that. Mine are so scary I have to redo my hair immediately! Your hair is lovely you just have a frizzy spot that ought not be there

The root thing I get anyway, it makes my curls go the opposite way of normal but I still get spirals I just have a lift at the roots. I fix some of those around my face while it's wet.

Chelle I did diffuse upside down after I put the gel in. I diffused until about 60% dry and then air dried and scrunched the crunch out at about 90% dry and hit a few spots with the diffuser as needed.
Tomorrow I'll arrange the top before finishing diffusing up there. I got it too dry to adjust and my hair was all going toward my face. Oops! I usually stand up and do part of my diffusing upright so I forgot that happens. It wasn't bad once I scrunched just not my preferred look.

Man I'm happy to have some volume! My top is a little flatter than if it were a bit shorter but it's so much better than normal and boy is my hair curlier!
I haven't seen pics of your hair in a while Chelle but your curls are just beautiful, it always looks full in your pics

Lushaholic,

I think that your hair is so beautiful, it doesn't matter what you do to it!
Speaking of headband, it looks so adorable on you! Did you get it from Curlmart?

I've been reading this thread, sounds like a nice routine, but I don't think that my 3b/c hair could handle being washed with poo 2x's!

I shampooed twice and actually I conditioned twice ( I have that soft water shampoo has a hard time rinsing out thing so I paranoidly rinse a lot and condition twice after a shampoo)

I did the brushing and used aveda gel again. It's drying but it's got a lot of curl and movement on top already woohoo! And lots of spirals! Apparently my hair likes it so far. It breaks up my huge clumps just enough to take the weight off the curls I think and make the spirals. Unless I see some ends thinning drastically faster I'm sold until it stops working for me.
No leave in is one less thing to use too. Now in the winter I'd need leave in but right now it's so humid the only thing a leave in is good for is protectant which is fine but I left a little bit of the rinse out in so I should be ok.

I might go to Sally's and invest in a Denman brush, I think they have them for slightly under $10.

Hey Ladyd! You're too nice! I actually got that headband on ebay. I've bought a couple of different headbands from here and they're both lovely. Much cheaper too! I actually have ordered 3 from her total but one of them never showed. I don't think that was her fault though. She doesn't have anything good up right now though because I checked earlier. They're really nice and comfy though and don't give me a headache.

hockeymom, I got my Denman at Sally's too, just like you said around 8-9 bucks with tax. The sales chic was actually really nice and went ahead and gave me the cardholders discount even though I don't have one.

I decided to try the B&A Method the last couple of days, and surprisingly, my hair has turned out great both days. It could be a coincidence but so far so good.

I don't own any B&A products so I used my Mop Top shampoo, conditioner and gel along with a little BRHG. I double washed with just a little shampoo, combed the conditioner through and left it on while I shaved and washed my face, rinsed the conditioner out and then combed through my rinsed hair upside down. I don't own a brush and can't really see trying to brush through my hair but the comb went through easily. I then scrunched out as much water as I could before scrunching in a big dollop of gel. I scrunched with my mf towel a bit and then plopped for just a few minutes beofre air drying the rest of the way. I did diffuse just the front of my hair for a minute or two to try and set it. Once my hair was dry I just ran my finger through it from below to break up the crunch (which was minimal). I could actually have skipped washing my hair this morning and had 2nd day hair ( a first for me) but I wanted to see if this method would work again so I repeated it today. We'll see if this method keeps working or if this was all just a fluke

I tried brushing after conditioning and after applying my gel today. Like others it didnt work as well as just brushing prior to the gel application...live and learn.

Well, now I'm gonna have to go to Sally's this weekend and get one those brushes, too. It worked well for me using the shower detangler comb, but now I HAVE to try the brush. I had 2nd day hair today -- first time in a long time. Another reason to LOVE the Aveda gel. Still gotta try this method with the B&A gel, though.

If I'm Going To Have A Bad Hair Day, It Might As Well Be In Aruba!

I've been doing this method for a few days now. Although, I'm not going to be shampooing daily, so I'll probably go back to maybe once a week shampoos. Mainly I'm doing co washes, or water washes in between, but I am doing the brushing thing. I've brushed my get through in the past, and never got any good results, but brushing out of the shower BEFORE I put in the gel makes a huge difference.

Of course it doesn't make it "curlier", but I wouldn't expect it to. I think, rather, it distributes the hair so that you can re work the style in with the gel. I like the way my hair comes out a lot better. Prior to that, I may have gotten more curl formation, but had more instances of my curls falling flat, or my hair looking messy or dirty by the end of the day.

When I'm brushing before gelling, my hair is a lot softer and fluffier, and I don't have the messy hair look by the end of the day - and it seems less frizzy too.

It's a lot cleaner of a way to deal with the curls, so I don't feel like I have such unkempt hair. I can't wait to buy the B&A line so I can try it all out together.

Please excuse any typos. For the time being, we are blaming it on my computer.
Just wondering, they have a video on their site that explains how the shampoo *twice* the entire head of hair, then brush out upside down, then put gel into hair and then scrunch with a towel and let air dry......anyone use or try this?

I am considering buying their entire line just to give it a try because their hair and all of the hair on their site where they use this method looks really good.

So I tried this again today, or a variation thereof. I washed twice, but the first time I washed with No-Poo and the second time again with No-Poo but with a little bit of Low-Poo mixed in. Then I conditioned with a mix of Curls EAHT condish and One C, left it in a couple of mins while washing the rest and then adding some cold water just to make it easier to brush through. So I brushed and then rinsed out the condish. I did not brush again after rinsing and I didn't brush through my Recoil or B&A gel, but just started scrunching with paper towels right away, and air-dried the rest.

My results in the back were better than the other day, but still the clumps were much skinnier than I like, so I'm not sure I'll do it again, but I might give it one more try. It was definitely an improvement to the other day but again I guess I just like clumpier curls. I took some pics that I'll try to add to my albums in a bit.

eta: I added the photos to the same 'crappy hair' album, just to avoid confusion.

It's the method! Today I washed twice, first with Deva no-poo second with Deva low-poo. I used Aloeba for my condish, combed it in and left it in for exactly 60 seconds. Rinsed well, brushed and scrunched in two quarter fulls and one nickle full of ABBA weightless. Scrunched with my curl-ese towel, stuck in 3 duck clips on top of my head and diffused the Pixiecurl way. - WOW!! I have much more curl and volume. I am definately hooked on this method. I even have more curl than with the B&A gel but I do have some straight ends underneath - they are my longest pieces of hair and maybe I didn't get enough gel on them. I had to curl them with a curling iron or they stuck out of my curls about 4". I definately had way more shrinkage - YEA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
