Is ther a list of ingredients to avoid?

Hi...I'm still waiting for my library to get the Curly Girl book. But in the mean time is there a lis of ingredients to avoid in products? ~Thanks
What really helps me is going on the livecurlylivefree website and looking at the product ingredients link: here.
If you'd like a rule of thumb for silicones, look for ingredients that end in -cone, -conol, and-xane. If they don't have PEG- or PPG- in front of them, then they aren't water soluble and will require a low poo (sulfate free shampoo) to remove. Ingredients ending in -none are preservatives, not silicones.

Sulfates are Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate, Ammonium Laureth Sulfate, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, and Sodium Laureth Sulfate. C14-16 Sulfonate is technically not a sulfate, but isn't a particularly gentle cleansing ingredient either. Many choose to avoid it in shampoos in addition to avoiding traditional sulfates. Btw, Behentrimonium Methylsulfate is a conditioning agent, not a sulfate surfactant, so it's fine to use.

The CG book only says to avoid sulfates and silicones, but if you're only conditioner washing, you may well find that other ingredients build up too, such as butters, waxes, mineral oil, and petrolatum (petroleum). Some don't have issues with them, but others do, so you'll have to figure that out by trial and error for yourself.

I'd also suggest reading through the stickies on the board, and the Curl Chemist articles too.

While I am not CG, there are some ingredients that constiture automatic put down if an item has a certain ingredient. This list is really short since Geek_Chic covered a bunch already. One, Imidazolidinyl urea. It's my new enemy. Mineral is still on my dad list, but at least it does not have the potential to release formaldehyde. Two, Isopropyl alcohol (in products that are meant to be left in). I find the alcohol to be very drying. I use Tresseme Naturals that has isopropyl alcohol in the bottom of the ingredient list, but since I use it only as a cowash/detangler and not as a moisturizing conditioner or any other purpose and I rinse it out, it can't be too drying.

It may have been a slip of the fingers, or an auto-correct program gone rogue, but I think you probably meant to say that non-water soluble silicones require a sulfate poo, or a low-poo with coco-betaine to remove.

What I neglected to say is that in order to remove silicones that are not water soluble, a low poo needs to have Cocamidopropyl Betaine or Cocobetaine. A sulfate shampoo will also remove silicone, but those are generally less gentle than a low poo.
