Default Post-shower routine question

Hi all! Long time lurker here, posting with my first question...

I've finally decided to abandon my old post-shower routine (which was basically applying gel to towel-dried hair) in favor of applying the gel to soaking wet hair, like many have you suggested. Yesterday was the first time and the results were so-so. I was hoping for moist looking (not wet, but shiny and moist, does that make sense?), defined waves and curls but ended up with a very flat crown and poofy, fluffy, too-soft, undefined curls. I'm thinking maybe I didn't use enough gel?

Also, do you comb the gel through your soaking wet hair? If so, do you use your fingers or an actual comb? I'm hesitant to do it since that's likely to pull all my waves/curls out.

Thanks in advance... I've learned so much from you all!

After reading all the great advice, I put my leave in and gel into soaking wet hair yesterday and had the best hair day ever. Too bad I was home and couldn't show it off

Ooo! Congrats CurlyClaudia!

Did you apply the products and then wrap it in a towel or just leave it down to dry? Did you comb the products through or anything?

I raked the products in with my hands and clipped the roots for some added lift and left it down. My hair is still pretty short to be wrapped, pineappled, or plopped like most of the girls. I am trying to grow it out. Good luck

I apply mine to wet hair. Not damp but not soaking.

I rinse upside down, and scrunch gel into soaking wet hair. I rinse my hair upside down, and then turn away from the shower stream, and while still upside down, I scrunch gel into my hair - so I keep the gel close to, or inside the shower. After I dry myself off, I'll take a towel and lightly scrunch the water out of my hair. Sometimes I'll scrunch in a leave in cream too, but I change up whether I do this on soaking wet hair as well, or wait until it dries a bit. Either way, once I've scrunched the water out I shake my curls forward, and leave it alone for the curls to form, and for it to dry.

Thanks everyone... I think I need to look into doing the clip-thing to combat the flatness on top. And I'm going to try using a bit more gel too.

Alot of us use a wide-tooth comb to help distribute the gel (or mousse) through the hair while it's soaking wet. I use it to help distribute my leave-in conditioner as well.
