Propylene Glycol!? :(

Why the heck is this ingredient in every hair product known to man? What does it do exactly?
After much experimenting, I've decided that my hair just does NOT like this ingredient. I find that the higher up on the list it is, the more my hair freaks out. It gets very poofy and voluminous and not in a good way . My hair reacts the same way to glycerin. But it seems like EVERY single product I look at has propylene glycol in it.
I've been really liking this cheap mousse called Condition 3-in-1 that I've heard some curlies mention on the boards and I've realized that the reason my hair likes it so much is because it's the only styling product I own that doesn't have this ingredient in it. Coincidence? Anyway, someone on another thread had mentioned that it's being discontinued, ugh!!!

Just to clarify: ethylene glycol is the dangerous chemical commonly used in antifreeze.

Propylene glycol is also used in antifreeze as a safer alternative to ethylene glycol.
YES WE CAN!

Thanks for the article and clarification, ladies.
Safe or not, my hair just doesn't like this and according to this article it seems like it's in almost everything, not just hair products :x . I spent half an hour at the drugstore yesterday reading hair stylers labels and couldn't find a single one without it .
I've really gotten good at figuring out what works/doesn't work for my hair, wouldn't it be great if we could have custom made hair products?

My hair doesn't like propylene glycol too high in the ingredient list either, nor does my hair like glycerin as the first or second ingredient. I think the glycol makes my hair big and causes excessive shedding.

Cheleigh, sounds like our hair don't like similar things.
Does prop. glycol have any humectant properties, because for some reason my hair reacts badly (gets big and poofy) to anything "humectant" like glycerin, honey, etc. Weird huh?

i am pretty positive that my hair hates prop. glycol too. i feel like it is fine when i first apply it (in the from of a leave in), then later in the day my hair gets really dried out and breaks off/sheds more. i try to avoid it, but this is difficult.
