Rough & tangly- what did I do?? Long post...

I've been CG for about 5 months now & have never had happier hair. Until this morning that is. I had horrible tangles & my canopy was so rough & matted I was afraid I'd have to cut it off.

Here's what happened:
Last night I DT'd with Jessicurl WDT & TooShea (ran out of WDT so I punched up the TS with a Tbsp of melted cocoa butter & coconut oil) Everything was fine-- able to comb through no problem-- did a bun, put the bonnet dryer on for an hour then rinsed- again no problems with tangles or roughness. Scrunch in Aura Flaxseed Aloe Gel, plopped in a MF towel, clipped & air dried- no tangles. Pineappled & went to sleep in my satin bonnet.

This morning I un-pineappled & my hair was frizzed out & dry & stayed sticking up in the pineapple. Now I have BSL hair so think Bride of Frankenstein & you get the picture. And I was hoping to not have to do anything to it- hahaha!!

Got in the shower, when the water hit my hair & it instantly tangled up into a giant knot. Tried to detangle with TooShea but there was no slip & I couldn't get my fingers through it. Thought "maybe build up?" NoPooing was no help. LowPoo'd & then OneC'd- slightly better but it still felt rough & was tangling up the more I detangled. It was squeaky & rough instead of seaweedy. I resorted to palmfulls of TooShea & detangled as much as a I could & rinsed & repeated-4 times before I could get a comb through it. Afraid to leave it down, I combed it straight put jojoba/avocado/coconut oil mix on to smooth it out & twisted it back into a jaw clip. It still feels rough but I got the tangles out at least.

Any thoughts into what I did wrong? Is this over conditioned feels like? Not sure what to do next. This is the first time I added cocoa butter to a DT-- could that be it? I have not been using anything with protein or cones (except for Deva or GF CnS)

Thanks in advance for any help or advice. Sorry for the long rambling post

I get that with proteins, or, for me, overuse of isopropyl myristate. The latter is a conditioning agent, but too often makes me dry and tangly.

Like you, I've oiled. I've slept with my hair coconut oiled and bunned.

Thanks RCC-- I'll keep oiling & cross my fingers. I'm so bummed- I've been so careful & now this.

I'm pretty sure I'm keeping protein out of my hair- just the tiny bit in TS. It hasn't been a problem in 4 months but I guess anything can build up after a while. I'm going to PM you re: Steiner condish.

You've mentioned isopropyl myristate as a culprit before--- I have to double check if anything has it.

Yeah, I only use the Steiner every other or third day because of the isopropyl. I alternate with Nature's Gate hemp, although the Steiner is better in some ways. I think that jaemaria mentioned isopropyl myrisate being drying for her, but I haven't seen anyone else mention it. it may be something that not mayn react too. If not for jaemaria's post, I never would have guesed it, and it did help when I cut back on it.

I'm not sure what else could do it, but I'm sure others will have an idea. Are you using anything else besides the TS, WDT and the Deva stuff?

Let's see... I have a ton of stuff **my pj made me buy it all** but the regular rotation right now is:

Water wash daily or TJ Nourish/ NoPoo once a week
Too Shea or OneC Daily
GF CnS or Aloeba leave in
re:coil- pea sized blob- daily
HEBE or Angell or ArcAngel- the last few days has been Aura Flaxseed Aloe sculpting.
WDT with olive, coconut or almond oil added weekly

I didn't realize it but now that it's in black n white dang I put a lot of "stuff" in my hair!

I got tangly after all fall and winter of not shampooing even with a no sulfate poo. But since you low poo'd that probably isn't it.
Low poo is supposed to get out the A cone but I suppose you could need to clarify.

Like RCC lots of protein will make me tangly, too much conditioning sometimes too.
I hope you figure it out soon that would be so frustrating
2c/3a?
Low porosity, medium texture.

If it smells good put it in your hair, if it tastes good spit it out!
Thanks for your input ladies-- I really appreciate it.

Too much conditioning? Shoot! I wouldn't think it possible to use too much condish in my hair but hey I'm willing to try anything. I'll try rinsing 100%.

Today was a little better- I was able to leave it down & only 20 min to detangle.

I've been thinking-- could polyquats do this too? HEBE has 1 polyquat & Aura Flaxseed has 2.

Have you ever used the cocoa butter in your hair before? I'm just thinking that it's pretty solid at room temperature - do you think that it might have somehow solidified & just sort of stuck a bunch of your strands together? I really have no idea, it's just a thought....

Oops, just re-read your post about this being the first time using the cocoa butter That would be my guess, esp since it seemed OK (not tangly) until the next morning. That would've given the cocoa butter plenty of time to solidify If at all possible, I would definitely use some sort of true clarifying shampoo to make sure you get that out, then really condition it well

2b~~fine texture~~normal porosity (except for highlights, which are high)~~normal elasticity~~medium density

Shampoo: Still use sulfates, but only on roots
Rinse out: Deva One C, JC Too Shea, Original Sprouts Deep Conditioner
Curl Enhancers: KCCC; JC Rocking Ringlets, JC Spiralicious, & Confident Coils
Styler: BRHG (over any and all curl enhancers) - this is the one product that I never change - absolute HG!!

I

Polyquats do build up after a while. AT elast for some people. It takes a while and it builds up slowly. I had forgotten about quats

Since you all took the time to reply, I thought I should give you the update. I'm thinking it must have been the cocoa butter. I'll stick with WDT for cocoa butter rather than trying to add it. What a mistake!

Yesterday morning, I couldn't take it anymore so I went with kjwavy's suggestion & washed twice with HCC. It did the trick because when I got TS in there, the tangles fell out practically on their own. Seaweed is back! Whew. I ended up with beautiful ringlets & barely any frizz. It's better than it was before I messed it up.

There must be something to that B&A method because that's basically what I did & I'm pretty impressed. Heading off to read the monster thread...

Thanks for your support & ideas girls!

RCC quat buildup on me gets tangly and my hair is a bit dryer than usual and needs more leave in. Eventually my hair will lose some curl and get stiffer.
I didn't use quats all winter then this spring I started using them again and I have to low poo them off once a week or so or my hair gets to be a mess.

Tina yeah there is something to that method. I tried not brushing my hair today and boy is my hair noticably different! It's ok but it's not nearly as smooth and spirally.
