For those who use gel...

Initially I tried gel to try to cut down on frizz, when I first started experimenting/embracing my curly hair about two months ago. Compared to the days that I don't use gel, my hair is curlier, and keeps the curl longer, with gel. Except for last Sunday when I used too much, and it was just crunchy and gross. Unfortunately I'm not super skilled in the vocabulary of hair, but I think this means that I use gel for hold and definition!

If by "thick" hair you mean that you have a lot of hair, I do too. The curls on top tend to flatten what's underneath. Without gel, the hair underneath looks almost straight. With gel, I can tell there are curls under there, they're just being repressed ("Help, I'm being repressed!").
Ok, this is gonna sound crazy, but what exactly is the point of gel? Do you all use it for hold or definition? I've never used it because my hair is so thick, I dont know what the results would be. I have always imagined the hard stiff hair as well, but I am curious. Sorry if I pulled a guano!

I use it for definition and then to hold the definition it gives me. Without gel, my hair curls, but has a layer of fuzz over it, so I love gel.

3B that is no longer CG, but still endeavors to have healthy hair by not using sulfates.
Hmmm, all of those responses sound like a good incintive to try gel. Thanks ladies!

A lot depends on the type of gell too. I have some gels here that make my hair hard and others that don't.

If ya don't want crispy curls or waves I would recommend starting out with a flexible hold gel like Aussies Tizz No Frizz, for just one example. If it doesn't give you enough hold than gradually work your way up through different hold levels. There's may gels to choose from so it may take a lil experimenting, but well worth the effort once you find the right one.
Corkicelli Now! YAY! Now all I have to do is update my avy pic.
