Watch out with that Herbal Essences Humidity Defying, it's a SUPER gel but it's high in protein.
Thanks SuZen. I checked the ingreds on here before I used it this morning and saw it had protein so have been watching out for straw-like feeling as it drys, but so far none. It's only a wee sample I have so I thought I may as well try it and see what happens. For some reason protein doesn't affect me AS badly in gel, maybe because it's not part of a cream or conditioner which is fully absorbed? Or am i just making this up in my head?

cleanse: OS shampoo. PureNuffStuff cleanser.

Myself, I am okay with proteins in products that rinse out, like conditioners, but have trouble with stylers.

I adore that gel, but I couldn't use it more than one or two days in a row. One day was great, though.
Awesome. WEll I@ll keep that in mind, thanks I'm tempted to get a full tube of it from the US as my hair is about 80% dry and is feeling wonderful. It's amazingly soft which I'm assuming is because of the MOP conditioner, as all I used to style was the gel, but the gel doesn't seem to have dried me out at all. But I can appreciate that it would after one or two times. I just need to find another gel thats protein free to use in between times with the HE. All my winter gels just dont seem to work in the summer, as they're good for diffusing, but air drying leaves my hair bleuch. I do definately notice that wheat protein makes my hair curlier tho, as it's drying it'll slowly spring up. The Umberto Gianini Scrunching Jelly has wheat in it too and whilst it can dry me out (second ingredient is alcohol denat.) i also get super ringlets from that too.

Yes, wheat protein can definitely be curl-enhancing.
MOP do a foaming gel that is loaded with wheat too. If it wasn't i would be tempted dto get it, but wheat is one of the main ingredients, and it's what they promote it from, I think the word wheat appears three times in the description!

Are there ANY protein free, nicely hard-hold gels out there that dont dry ridiculously crunchy?

How about Biosilk RHG? I've been tempted by that one for a while...

Strong hold and crunchy are pretty much synonymous, unfortunately. BHRG is a very good strong hold gel. I don't know if you have Nioxin over there, they also have a gel that I like.
Well this HE gel hasn't dried very crunchy at all, yet my curls are very nicely defined. So really a gel just like HE, hold and crunch wise, but without proteins.

Usually to get major crunch out I need a pomade or something similar, but that then defeats the point of a sealing gel to help with frizz, as the pomade makes my hair fluffy

I've read that SIF is good to scrunch out crunch and I do have some, but everytime I've tried it my hair feels coated after.

SuZen, which Nioxin gel do you like?

jennyfurrens, have you tried/ had any luck with Curl Keeper? Just thinking it might help control frizz, if that's why you use a strong gel (rather than needing it for curl support, for example)
Glad to hear you're liking the mop, (see my sig) I'm curious if we're using the same products but with different names.

I think it's Nioxin Reflectives Smoothing Gel. My stylist uses it and I picked some up to use at home.
