Herbal Essences Set Me Up for disappointment!!

Hello, just wanted to see if anyone else had bad results with HESMU. I read a lot of curlies on here love it, but I have had more frizz and less defined curls. Anyone else? Any gels that have better hold/consistency? I have 3a coarse curls.

Yes, poof! Exactly what has happened. I'm new here, but so many people seem to like it. I thought something must be wrong with my hair. Have you found anything else that works for you?

The trick to these is finding the right amount for your hair. I have had great hair days with the above gels but I have also had really crappy hair days when I have gone heavy handed and applied just a drop too much.

Thanks for the ideas, I'll have to try them. I ordered recoil yesterday, so I hope that helps. I was using graham webb making waves curl defining gel, but it's not working for me anymore. It worked for a long time, and I loved it. Anyone else have some great product ideas for a 3a coarse curly??
The title made me smile

Perhaps you'd like a thicker gel? From what I remember SMU is rather light. Sorry it didn't work for you.

I didn't like it either. I was able to get through most of my bottle by mixing the gel w/ water in my hand. That was the only way it worked for me. However, in doing this I got pretty decent hair.

Please excuse any typos. For the time being, we are blaming it on my computer.
I'm glad it wasn't only me. I didn't like it at all. I like a lot more hold and was disappointed in how I felt like I had nothing at all in my hair. My hair started to frizz and expand within the first hour. Smelled good, liked the idea of a cheap gel......alas it is in my product graveyard.

So glad to hear I'm not alone!! I will have to try recoil and a thicker gel. Anything I could find at an ulta or beauty express/trade secret that anyone loves? My product graveyard has yet another addition today. At least this one was cheap. It's sad when the graveyard is taking over my product closet!
I wasn't thrilled with it either. It was nothing like the piecey, curl boosting HE Humidity Defying Gel it replaced. And Totally Twisted was just that...no hold with twisted frizz.

Love the thread title, btw!
SMU didn't work for me either. It made my hair producty and poofy at the same time. I like Body Envy a LOT better.

^^ I second that. The BE gel is wayyy better - I get bouncy curls with volume, unlike the stringy producty curls that I get with SMU
I totally liked the BE better myself. The SMU just gave me stringy hair - not a good look!

Did you try the Set Me Up Mousse? I have better luck with mousse than with gel and the mousse is doing well for me.

I got a sample of SMU and originally thought it was Humidity Defying, but I noticed that it was a great curl enhancer! It gave me a lot more ringlets and tighter curls which I loved (SMU that is), altho it didnt give great hold through to second day hair. Just wondered if despite the bad reviews, anyone else noticed it giving good curl enchancing properties?

cleanse: OS shampoo. PureNuffStuff cleanser.

style: B2Basics GreenTeaGel. T&G Curl Balm. JCarter Nourish&Shine.

The SMU totally did NOT work for me at all, but I did give the Body Envy gel a chance, & I do love that one for the cooler weather. It started giving me frizz once the heat & humidity hit, so I put it away for the summer.

BRHG is definitely my HG, esp for the summer. The only other gel that I've tried that comes close in hold is the CHI Infra gel (it's in a red pump container), but I think that one is about the same price as the BRHG.

I've combined some of my lesser hold gels w/the BRHG to get rid of them (& stretch out the BRHG) & that's worked well. Good luck

2b~~fine texture~~normal porosity (except for highlights, which are high)~~normal elasticity~~medium density

Shampoo: Still use sulfates, but only on roots
Rinse out: Deva One C, JC Too Shea, Original Sprouts Deep Conditioner
Curl Enhancers: KCCC; JC Rocking Ringlets, JC Spiralicious, & Confident Coils
Styler: BRHG (over any and all curl enhancers) - this is the one product that I never change - absolute HG!!

I

jenny it enhances my curls too. It is that slimy gooey texture that gives me really good clumping too. I like it personally. Now I don't get 2nd day hair but I rarely do anyway. I do get hold all day long from it though. I get more movement on the top of my hair too which is generally straighter.
2c/3a?
Low porosity, medium texture.

If it smells good put it in your hair, if it tastes good spit it out!
I was really liking the SMU in the colder temps but it's been pooping out on me since the temps and humidity have been going up .
Jenny, I find that it does tighten my curls because it's causing my hair to soak up any moisture that's in the air. Too tight for me since I just had 4 inches cut off!
3b/c fine, thick, porous, protein sensitive

I haven't had much lick with any of the HE gels I've ever tried. There was a volume one once that wasn't too bad but it's long since been discontinued.
I get super frizz with all of them.
