When I was going to Devachan several years ago, I didn't mind my haircut coming to $110 or so, including tips. But now? Who can afford these cuts??

That's insane! I get a wonderful haircut for $25!! In total I spend $35 because I love how she cuts it so much I tip $10 (which for me is a lot for a tip..I'd tip more if I could afford it).

So, Kurlee, will you still go to Carlos? I had switched to Melissa who is at the original shop, from Carlos and she is cheaper, $95 the last time I went but I pretty much decided to go to beehive at $65 to Casey who is deva trained next time I get a cut. It is conveniently located, just one stop on the L into Brooklyn.

Yes I will still go this time, but I wish I could find someone cheaper and closer, but then again my cousin works at Devachan and soon ( I hope she will have her own chair) I can go to her She has been there about 2 or 3 years, she started right out of Beauty School..

They are just RUDE there. I called on a Thursday in April and made an appointment for the next Tuesday, and they told me it was $115. After I was all done and paying, all of a sudden it was $130 or $135! They said that it had changed on the Friday. I said, Unfair, why didn't you call? They just shrugged.

RUDE!

And, by the way, I think the products are just awful. That Angell and the Low Poo especially. And yes, I've done the no-poo deal and followed all the instructions. And although the cut itself was good, my hair looked dead, limp and ugly after they styled it - the products are just yuck. I'm sorry, a good haircut is important, and they seem to know how to do it, but the rest of the whole mystique is just a racket in my opinion, to sell product. I'll be trying to find a more reasonably priced alternative hairstylist closer to home.

Keewee, why not go to Beehive? It is cheaper and really not far into Brooklyn? Although, will your cousin be able to charge you less?

apparently Devachan's prices increase by 15.00 every 6 months, the first time I went to Carlos it was 90.00 then 105.00 then I missed a 6 month appt. so that would have been 120.00 now it is 135.00

Beehive is one stop on the L train, I think Bedford avenue. Casey is the curly hair person. Look on their website for their address. It is easy to get to, justdown the block from the subway stop.

Just by way of comparison (since I'm a midwesterner and all these prices seem frankly insane to me!)...how much would it cost a straight-hair person to get a good, fashionable cut by a reputable salon in NYC? Is it much lower?

Most straight-haired women I know can't go 6 months or a year without a cut. They go in every 6 weeks. Now, the long haired ones (I'm talking really long, below bra strap) can go longer. So I'd say that on average, they pay about the same, even if it's less per cut, because they go in more often.

I'm just curious if the salon prices are in line with other salons. And it's just a cut? No coloring or anything else? Wow.

That makes absolutely no sense. I could see every year and maybe by $5 - $10, but it jumped $30 in six months. He won't be able to keep longstanding customers with those prices.

Oh my!! I wonder if Lorraine's cuts will increase when the other stylists cap at $300.

I think Nick from What Not to Wear charges a minimum of $300 for his haircuts. Wow.
